" Major General W. M. Cafe was present at the battle of Maharajpore 29th December 1843 (Bronze Starl. Also
throughout tlio runjaub campaign of 1848-49, including tne actions of Sadoolaporc, Chillianwallah, and Goojerat,
and pursuit of the Sikhs and Atfghans (Medal with two Clasps). Served during the Indian Mutiuj- cam])aign in
1857-58, and was present in the engagement at Meangunge, the siege and capture of Lucknow, and the action of
Rooyah—severely wounded (Medal with Clasp, and Victoria Cross): received the YC "for bearing away, under
a heavy fire, with the assistance of Privates Thompson, Crowic, Spcnce, and Cook, the body of Lieutenant
Willoughby, lying near the ditch of the Fort of Ruhya, and for running to the rescue of Private Spence, who had
been severely wounded in the attempt. Date of act of braverj', 15th April 1858."
'•'* Major General S. Chalmers served in the Sonthal campaignin 1855. Also in the Indian Mutiny campaign,
including the siege and capture of Lucknow—severely wounded (Medal with Clasp).
«' Major Genera! C. P. Hiklebrand served in the Burmese war of 1852-53 (Medal with Clasp for Pegu).
'8 Major General J. M. Earle served throughout the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46, and was present at the actions of
Moodkee, Fcrozcshah, Buddiwal, and Aliwal (Medal and two Clasps).
» Major General E. S. Jackson was Adjutant of the 12th Bengal Native Infantry when the Wing at Nowgong
mutinied in June 1857, and was instrumental in saving the life of Mrs. Kerchoff, the wife of the Sergeant Major, whom
he rescued from danger by carrying her behind hiin on horseback (Medal). Was engaged in an alfair with a
party of Bun(^ee1ns.
I™ Major General G. Smart served with the expedition to China in 1S60 and was present at the capture of the
Taku Forts (.Medal with Clasp).
">i Major General J. C. P. Baillie served throughout the Indian mutiny campaigns of 1857-59; was Orderly Officer
to General Nicholson in the engagement with the Sealkote mutineers near Goordaspore on the T2'th July
1857 (severely wounded) ; served with Brigadier Seaton's Column at the actions of Gungeree and Puttiallee, and
re-occupation of Mynporie. AtKankur, Rohilcund border, in April 1858 ; served with the Soraon Field Force at the
taking of Forts Hehain and Tiroul. Served with Brigadier Kelly's Force during the operations in the Terai, and
present at the actions of Ruttonpore, and attack made on the rebels' position in lower Nepaul range — wounded
(mentioned in despatches. Medal).
"" Major General R. Blair served in the Sonthal campaign in 1856. Also during the Indian mutiny of 1S57-58,
including the Bundlecund campaign in 1859 under Brigadier Wheeler (Medal).
"" Major General H. A. Browne served throughout the Burmese war of 1852-53, and was present at various
skirmishes (Medal with Clasp for Pegu).
'"5 Major General W. Butler Shawe served in the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1S58 (Medal).
lo^ Major General W. F. Stephens served in the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46 and was present at the battle of
Moodkee (charger shot) on Escort duty with the Commander in Chief (Medal).
'™ Major General J. Blairserved throughout the Indian mutiny campaign of 1S57-59, and was present at the siege
of Neemuch, siege and assault at Kotah and pursuit of Tanti'a Topee (Medal with Clasp, and Victoria Cross):
received the Y€ " for having on two occasions dietinguished himself bj- his gallant and daring conduct, i. On
the night of the 12th August 1857, at Neemuch, in volunteering to apprehend seven or eight armed mutineers
■who had shut themselves up for defence in a house, the door of which he burst open. He then rushed in among
them, and forced them to escape through the roof; in this encounter he was severel3- wounded. In spite of his
wounds ho pursued the fugitives, but was unable to come up with them in consequence of the darkness of the
night. 2. On the 23rd October 1857, at Jeerum, in fighting his way most gallantly through a body of rebels who
had literally surrounded him. After breaking the end of his sword on one of their heads, and receiving a severe
sword-cut on his right arm, he rejoined his troop. In this wounded condition, and with no otiier weapon than the
hilt of his broken sword, he put himself at the head of his men, charged the rebels most effectuallj', and dispersed
them."
"" Major General M. Thomson served throughout the mutiny of 1857-58, was engaged in the trenches at Cawnporo
during the massacre, was one of the only four survivors, and was five times wounded and had a horse shot under
him (Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Major, and a j-ear's service).
11' Sir Charles Gough served throughout the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including the action of Eam-
nuggur, passage of the Chenab, and battles of Sadoolapore, Chillianwalla, and Goojerat (Medal with two Clasps).
Served in the Indian mutiny campaign of 1857-58 ; with the Guide Corps at siege and capture of Delhi; commanded
Guide Cavalry in affairs at Khurkondaon 15th, and Rhotuck on 17th and i3th August; engaged in the cavalry affair
in rear of the Camp on nth Sejitember. Served with Brigadier Showers' Column in the Delhi and Jlmjjur districts.
Was engaged in the action of Narnole on the i6th November. Served with Hodson's Horse at the actions of Gun-
geeree, Piitteallee, Mynpoorie, and Shumshabad (wounded). Commanded a Squadron of Hodson's Horse at the
action of Meangunge; present throughout the siege and captirre of Lucknow (Medal with two Clasps, Victoria
Cross, and Brevet of Major) ; was awarded the T€—"i.For gallantry in an affair at Khurkowdah, near
Rhotuck, on the 15th August 1857, in which he saved his brother, who was wounded, and killed two of the
enemy. 2. For gallantry on the i8th August when he led a Troop of the Guide Cavalry in a ch.nrge, and cut
down'two of the enemy's sowars, with one of whom he had a desperate hand-to-hand combat. 3. For gallantry
on the 27tli January 185S, at Shumshabad, where, in a charge, he attacked one of the enemy's leaders, and
pierced him with his sword, which was carried out of his hand in the melee. He defended himself with his
revolver, and shot two of the enemy. 4. For gallantry on the 23rd February 1858, at Meangunge, where he
came to the assistance of Brevet Major O. H. St. George Anson, and killed his opponent, immediately afterwards
cutting down another of the enemy in the same gallant manner." Served with the Bhootan E.xpedition in 1864-65
(Medal with Clasp). Served in the Afghan war of 1S78-80, and was present at the attack and capture of Ali Musjid,
and in the engagement at Futtehabad (mentioned in despatches); commanded a force of all arms which proceeded
from Gandamuck to the relief of Cabul in December 1879 (mentioned in despatches), and commanded a brigade in
the engagement at Saidabad (mentioned in despatches, KCB., Medal with two Clasps).
i'^* Major General S.DeB.Edwardes served in the MaheeKanta Field Force in 1858,in pursuit of Tantia Topee,present
at the action of Anoria. Served as Deputy Assistant Quarter Master General in the Abyssinian Expedition in 1868,
present at the action of Arogee and at the assault and capture of Magdala (Medal). Served in the Afghan war in
1879-80 as Chief Director of Transport on the line between Sukkur and Quetta, and took part in the defence of
Candahar (mentioned in despatches, CB., Medal).
I's Major General R. S. Hill served in defence ofKuraaon Hills and Rohilcnnd against the rebels in 1857-58; present
at Chapoorah; with Brigadier Troup's Column during the campaign in Oude and present at the actions of Pusgaon
and Russoolpore, attack and capture of Fort Mittowlee, and action of Biswah (Medal). Served in the Bhootan
campaign of 1865-66 (Meilal with Clasp); in the Huzara campaign of 1868 including the operations on the "Black
Mountain" (Clasp); and in the operations in the Malay Peninsula in 1875-76 (Clasp). Served in the Afghan war
of 1878-80 on the Khyber line of communications (Medal).
"* Colonel H. Melvill served in the Kumaon Militia during 1857 and commanded Cavalry in an attack made
from Nynee Tal upon a jjortion of the Rohilcund rebels. Served with the Oude Police Cavalry from May till
September 185S ; was in command of a Police Force (Cavalry and Infantry') at Mahon near Lucknow when an
attack was made on that post by the enemy on the evening of the 7th August 185S. Commanded the Cavalrj-in
an attack made by a Police Force upon the fort and position of Birwa on 26th August 1858 (Medal).
11^ Colonel B. M. Lawford was employed in Beagal and Bundlecund from February to December i855(Meda] with
Clasp).
1" Colonel G. B. Fisher was present with the 32nd Bengal Native Infantry in the Sonthal district during
the mutinies of 1857, fmil marched with the Head Quarters from Bowsee to Raneegunge when the four companies
on command mutinied. Took a detachment of volunteers from his regiment to China, and served with the 65th
N. I. during the occupation of Canton in 1858-59 (Medal).
118 Colonel W. A. Pranks was present with the Head Quarters of the 12th Bengal Native Infantry when it muti¬
nied at Nowgong on the loth June 1857. He served subsequently throughout the mutinj- campaign (Modal). Sen-ed
in the Afghan war in i878--'9 with the Pcshawur Valley Field Force, including the second expedition into the
Bazar Valley (Medal).
iw Colonel H. K. Bushe served with the Belgaum Field Force in 1857-58, and was present at the surrender
and occupation of the fortress of Shorapore (Medal).
1^" Colonel R. W. Elton was jiresent with his regiment at the outbreak of the mutiny at Delhi on the nth
