^ air Frederick Edward Chapman proceeded on a special mission to Constantinople in Jan. 1854. Was employed
surveying the positions at Bulair, Adrianople, and Buguk Tchekmadgie, previous to the arrival of the British
i^'orces in Turkey ; was attached to the ist Division, and accompanied it to Bulgaria and Bulganak, and M'Kenzie's
Farm; also present at the battles of Alma and Inkerman. Served throughout the siege of Sebastopol, during the
early part of which he was Director of the Left Attack, and in the latter part he was Executive Engineer to the
Forces. Was several times mentioned in official despatches, and received the Brevet ranks of Major, Lt.Colonel,
and Colonel, CB., Medal with three Clasps, Officer of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 3rd
Cla?s of the Medjidie.
^ ' Sir Lintorn Simmons was employed for three years in the disputed territory on the N.E. frontier of the United
St:ites in constructing works for its defence and in making military explorations. Happening to be in Turkey in
1853 he was specially employed Ijy Lord Stratford de Rcdcliffe on several important services ; joined Omar Pasha in
March 1854; escorted the new Governor into Silistria after the former one had been killed, and was present during
part of the siege of that fortress; laid out and threw up the lines of .Slobodzie and Georgevo on the Danube, having
entire charge of the operation with 20,000 men of all arms under his command, a Russian Army of 70,000 men being
within seven miles : was present during the occupation of Wallachia and had frequent charge of reconnaissances
upon the enemy's rear. Went to the Crimea in Dee. 1854 to concert with the allied Commanders in Chief as to the
movements of the Turkish Army : was present at the battle of Eupatoria, laid out and threw up the entrenched
camp round that place ; afterwards was before Sebastopol from April 1855 until after its fall, and then went to
Mingrelia and was present at the forced passage of the Ingui, where he commanded the Division which crossed the
river and turned the enemj-'s position, capturing his works and guns : Omar Pasha in his despatch attributed the
success of the day chiefly to Lt.Colonel Simmons, He served as Her Majesty's Commissioner to the Ottoman Army
throughout the war and was employed in all the negotiations having reference to the movements of Omar Pasha's
Army. Has received the Crimean Medal with Clasp, the Turkish Gold Medal for the Danubian campaign, the Order
<if Medjidie 3rd Class, and a Sword of Honor from the Turkish Government; also the 4th Class of the Legion of
Honar. Was Her Majesty's Commissioner for laying out the Turco-Russian boundary in Asia, and granted the 2nd
Class of the Medjidie by the Sultan, but was refused jjermission to accept it.
* General) Durnford served as Executive Engineer in the combined Naval and Military expedition up the
Canton river in April 1847, and was present at the capture of eight forts, viz.. North and South Wantong, at the
Bocca Tigris; Pachow and Wookongtap, at the Barrier ; Zig-zag, Segment, Shaneen, and Dutch Folly, at Canton.
' General Wynne served as Commanding Royal Engineer in the expedition to China in 1857-59 (Medal).
• Lieut.General Hadden was actively employed in Canada during the rebellion in 1837-39, and was engaged
with the rebels at St. Eustache and St. Bonoit.
' Lieut. General Browneserved for nearly si.x months in the Trenches before Sebastopol; was present at the repulse
of sorties on 22nd March and 5th April; was Senior Officer of Engineers at the cajiture and defence of Quarries on
,7th June, for which service he was honourably mentioned in despatches, and received the Brevet of Major. Suc¬
ceeded Colonel Tylden as Directing Engineer of the Right Attack, and in the execution of the duties of that appoint¬
ment was severel.v wounded by a ritle-ball on 24th August, which broke the left arm, passed through shoulder,
and injured jaw (Medal with Clasp, Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel, CB., Knight of the Legion of Honor,
Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
'■' Lieut.General Nicholson served at the .siege and fall of Sebastopol from August 1855,commanded 4th Company
R.E. at Kinbourn, and was in immediate direction of the works for the destruction of Sebastopol Dockyard (Medal
witli Clasp, Brevet of Major, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served in the Indian campaign from
i2th Dec. 1857 to 23rd Dec. 1858, and was present at the capture of Lucknow (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, CiJ., Medal
with Clasp); has been frequently mentioned in despatches.
1" Sir Gerald Graham served throughout the Ea.s"tern campaign of 1854-55, including the battles of Alma and
Inkerman, and served in the Trenches throughout thesiegeof Sebastopol—twice wounded ; ledaladderparty to the
assault of the Redan on the i8th June 1855 (Victoria Cross), and was on duty in the Trenches at the final assault of
the 6th Sejit.; was emploj-ed in the destruction of the Docks of Sebastopol (Medal with three Clasps, Knight of the
Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, Turkish Medal, and Brevet of Major): was awarded the ITlC for
" determined gallantry at the head of a ladder party, at the assault of the Redan (Sebastopol), on the 18th June
1855. Devoted heroism in sallying out of the trenches on numerous occasions, and bringing in wounded officers
and men." Served throughout the campaign of i860 in North China, including the assault of Tangku and the
Tuku Forts, and surrender of Pekin—wounded with jingall-ball (Medal with two Clasps, and Brevet of
Lt.Colonel). Served throughout the Egyjitian war of 1882 in command of the 2nd Briirade, and w 13 present at the
<)ngagements of El Magfar and Tel-el-Mahuta, the two actions at Kassasin, and in the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (twice
mentioned in do.spatches, received the thanks of both Houses of Parliament, KCB., Modal with Clasp, 2nd Class of
the Medjidie, and Khedive's Star). Commanded the expedition to the Soudan in 1884, and was present in ih; en-
frugemeuts at El Teb and Temai (promoted Lt.General for distinguished service in the field, ist Class of the
Medjidie, two Clasps). Again commanded an expedition to the Soudan in 1885 (received the thanks of both
Houses of Parliament, OCMO., and Clasp).
" Major General Lennox landed in the Crimea on 30th Sept. 1854 and served uninterruptedly with the Army there
luntil it re-embarked in June 1856 : was present at the battle of Inkerman, attack and capture of the Rifle Pits on 20th
Nov. 1854 (Victoria Cross), siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with two Clasps, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and
jth Class of the Medjidie): was awarded the IJiC for " cool and gallant couduct in establishing a lodgment in
'I'ryori's Rifle Pit (Sebastopol), and assisting to repel the assaults of the enemy. This brilliant operation drew
fortli a special order from General Canrobert." Sei-vedin the Indian campaign of 1857-58 ; was present at the action
of Khnjwa; commanded the Engineer Brigade at the relief of Lucknow by Lord Clyde (mentioned in Lord Clyde's
■despatch, and thanked by the Governor General in Council), and ag.ainstthe Gwalior Contingent ending in its defeat
jit the battle of Cawnpore on 6th Dec; present at the action of Khodagunj ; served at the siege of Lucknow in March
1858 (mentioned in Chief Engineer's report and received Brevetof Major) ; commanded the Engineers at theattack
on Fort Rooya, and at the action of Alleegunj; present at the capture of Bareilly, and at the action of Dour deakera ;
commanded the Engineers at the attack of Fort Oomreeah ; present at the atfair of Burgeedia, the captui e of Fort
Musjoedia, and the affair on the River Raptee near Bankce 31st Dec. 1858 (four times mentioned in despatche3,Medal
with two Clasps, and Brevet of Lt.Colonel). Was sent to the German armies during the Franco-German war, and
was with them from the 14th November 1870 till the loth March 1S71. Present at the siege of Paris from nth to
J5th December 1870; at the siege of Mezieres from the 24th December till its surrender on the 2nd January 1871;
at the siege of Paris from the loth January till the 4th February; and at the siege of Belfort from 7th February
till the entry of the German troops on the i8th February 1871,
