" Captain deUoghton wi s awarded the Silver Medal and the Stanhope Gold Medal of the Roj-al Humnne Society
for the following act:—On Iho loth Sejitember 1874, at half-pasi g p.m., at Lo«-tsioft, .lames Dorling lell overboard
from the Yacht JDart whilst she was making for the inner harbour in a strong half Hood tideway, the night very
dark, blowing and raining hard, and going about live and a half knots. Lieut. J, de Hoghton, loth Foot,'"jumpe(l
overboard, swam to Dorling, smd supported him in the water for about a quarter of an hour in the tideway between
narrow high ])ilework, withcui crobslieams or side chains to lay hold of, and the head of the pilework twelve or
fifteen feet above the water—the yacht being carried away into the inner hai hour and no other vei-sel or boat in
the gateway to lend assistance ; the darkness prevented any immediate help being obtained from the shore. The
length of the gateway about ^50 yards, width 15 to 20 yards, depth 10 to 15 feet. Lieut, de Hoghton ai.d Dorling
were ultimately drawn up the jjilcwork by ropes from the shore. "
'* Captain Dempster was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Ko.yal Humane Society for having, on the 17th May
1863, assisted in saving a shipwrecked crew at Port Louis, Mauritius.

1879, rescued a lady from drowning at Boulogne-sur-Mer, and attempting to save others who were overwhelmed in
the surf while bathing; also received a Gold Medal of Honour from the President of the French Republic for the

jumped into the Nile at Esncli and rescued an interpreter of the Egyptian Army, who, while endeavouring 10 cross
the river, was overcome b.v the current and had sunk twice.
-* Major Goodwyn was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 29th Julj-1884,
jumped into the Red Sea with all his clothes on to try and save a boy who hail fallen overboard from the Nubia;
after being twenty minutes in the water, here known to be infested with sharks. Major Goodwj'n was picked up
by the ship's boat without having succeeded in finding the lad.
'' Captain Greenwood was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 31st
March 1879, assisted to rescue a-privato of the loth Hussars who, with many others, had been washed off the ford
into the rapids in the Cabul River, near Jell.alabad.
*" Mr. Grier has received the Albert Medal of the 2nd Class for the following service :—On the 26th August 1880
Lieut. Graham, loth Regiment, was dying of diphtheria, when Surgeon Grier performed upon him the operation of
tracheotomy, and, observing that no inspiration followed, at the imminent risk of his own life applied his lips to
the wound and by suction restored to the patient the power of breathing. Lieut. Graham's life was thus saved for
the time, although unfortunately on the following day the disease extended to his lungs and he died.
27 Lieut.Geueral Grierson was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 29th
January 1853, at MuUingar, Ireland, plunged into the water, broke up the ice, and rescued a man who had fallen
through while skating,
2* Colonel R. C. Hart was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving the life of a
Frenchman from drowning in the harbour of Boulogne-sur-Mer, on the 26th July 1S69, he himself having received
on this occasion several severe wounds of the head and face from striking, in a leap from the pier, some sunken
piles or rocks; has also received for the same service a Medallion from the Mayor, in the name of the city of
Boulogne, and a Medal of Honour of the First Class from the President of the French Republic. Lt.Colonel Hart
has also been awarded by the Royal Humane Society a Silver Clasp for having, on the 15th December 1884, gone
to the rescue of a gunner who was in imminent danger of drowning in the Ganges Canal at Roorkee, and whose
life he assisted in saving.
2" Lt.Colonel Harve.v was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving two lives from
drowidng when on duty |as Deputy Assistant Quarter Master General disembarking the 4th Regiment from
H,M,S. Tamar at Queenstown on the night of the 4th August 1874.
3° Captain Hervey was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the loth April
1879, rescued a dulladar of the ist Punjab Cavalry who had been carried away from his horse by the force of the
current on the River Arjandah, near Candahar,
S"t Lieut, Hodder was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a native of Mauritius
in Port Louis Harbour on the lotli May 1886.
31 Captain Hunt was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 6th September
1B72, rescued one man and attempted to save another who had sunk while bathing at Whitby,
32 Brigade Surgeon Hunt was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for jumping into the
River Liffcy at Dublin on the nth July 1857, and rescuing Joseph Ward from drowning.
33 Lieut. Ingram was awarded the lironze Medal of the Eoyal Humane Society for saving the life of a man who
had been upset from a boat on the cataract of Del, in the Nile. The current was very strong, and considerable
risk was incurred from the rocks in ihe rapids,
3' Lieut. Lo Marchant was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 8th July
1884, saved Lieut. S. B, Graham from drowning in the Nile at Assouan.
35 Captain Lemon was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 20th August
1880, jumped into the sea at Clontarf, near Dublin, and by great exertions brought back to his boat a gentleman
who was being carried away by the tide in a sinking state,
3« Colonel Lockhart was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for jumping into the water with
all his clothes on and, with the assistance of Lieut, M, Clementi, of the Bengal Staff Corps, rescuing two women
who had been upset from a boat on the Morar Lake, Gwalior, on the 26th December 1869.
3' Captain M'Bae was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, with the assistance of
Captain H. Holmes, saved the life of a trumpeter of the Royal Artillery who had fallen into a well 88 feet deep
with 12 feet of water, at Rawul Pindee, on the 5th October, 18S6,
38 Major MacMahon was awarded the Silver Medal of the Ro.yal National Lifeboat Institution for his exer¬
tions in putting off in a canoe or curragh to the assistance of two men who had been left on board the
brigantine Henrietta, of Havre, which during a heavy gale of wind became a total wreck near Mutton Island on
the ist December 1S67,
