39 War Services of the Colonels.
'1 Sir Owen Tudor Bume served in the Crimea with the 20th Regt. subsequent to the fall of Sebastopol, from the
14th March 1856. Also in the Indian mutiny campaign of 1857-58 as Adjutant of the 20th Regiment and also Bri¬
gade Majoron the Stalfof Brigadier Evelegh, and was present at the actions of t;handa, Umeerpore, and Sultmpore,
siege aiid capture of Lucknow, actions of Mohan, Meeangunge, Poorwah. Hussungunge, Morar Mow, Fort of
Siniree, Fort Churda and Fort Musjeedia, Muchlecgaon. Kaber Jungles, Fort Dooraha, and finnl operations in
Oude in 1859 (several times mentioned in despatches, promoted to an Unattached Company, and Brevet of Major
for services in the field. Medal with Clasp). Appointed in i86i Military Secretary to Lord Strathnairn, Commander
in Chief in India. Accompanied Lord Strathnairn to England in 1865, and remained on his Staff when Com¬
mander of the Forces in Ireland. Present during the Fenian disturbances in 1866-67 (received the thanks of the
authorities in Ireland). Proceeded to India in 1868 with the late Earl of Mayo, Viceroy and Governor General, and
served with him as Private Secretary until his assassination in 1872 (received the thanks of Government for his
services, promoted to an Unattached Majority, and appointed a CSI).
_ "^ Colonel L.O'Connor servedtheEasterncampaignof 1854-55 with the 23rdFusiliers,incladngthebattleof Alma,
where after being severely wounded he carried the Queen's Color (Lieut. Anstruther who previously carried it
having been killed) and planted it on the Russian Redoubt under a heavy fire, and carried it until the action was
over—received the thanks of Sir George Brown and General Codrington on the field ;—siege and fall of Sebastopol,
attack on the Quarries, and assaults of the 18th June and 8th of September on the Uedan—dangerously wounded
(Medal with two Clasps, Victoria Cross, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie): received
the I'lC under the following circumstances :—"Was one of the centre Sergeants at the battle of the Alma, and
advanced between the Ofticers, carrying the colours. When near the Redoubt, Lieutenant Anstruther, who was
carrying a colour, was moitally wounded, and he was shot in the breast at the same time, and lell; but, recovering
himself, snatched up the colour from the ground, and continued to carry it till the end of the action, although
urged by Captain Granville to relinquish it, and go to the rear, on account of his wound; was recommended for,
and received his commission, for his services at ihe Alma. Also behaved with great gallantly at the assault on
the Redan, 8th September, 1855, where he was shot through both thighs." Served in the Indian campaign of
1857-58, including the relief of Lucknow by Lord Clyde, deleat of the Gwalior Contingeiit at Cawnpore, siege and
capture of Lucknow and operations across the Goomtee under Outram, and several other minor actions (Medal
wiih two Clasps). Embarked for the Gold Coast with the 2nd Battalion 23rd Fusiliers in 1873 (Brevet of Lt.
Colonel, Ashanti Medal).
" Colonel H. W. J. Trent served with the 63th Light Infantry throughout the New Zealand war in 1864-66, was
present at the assault on the Gate Pah (mentioned iu despatches), and acted as a regimental Major in the action of
Te Ranga, and severelj' wounded in right wrist while leading two Companies of the 68th into the left of the enemy's
rifle-pits (mentioned in despatches. Brevet of Major, and Medal).
'» Colonel W.Allan served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the 41st Regiment, including the battles of
Alma and Inkerman, siege and fall of Sebastopol, repulse of the sortie on 26th October, and assault of the Redan
on the 8th September (Medal with Clasps, Knight of the Legion of Honor, and Turkish Medal).
" Colonel S. Hackett served throughout the Ei-stern campaign of 1854-55 as Adjutant of the 28th Rggiment,
including the battles of Alma and Inkerinan, siege aud fall of Sebastopol and affair in the Cemetery (Medal with
three Claspa, 5th Class of the Medjidio, and 'Turltish Medal). Served with the 26th Cameronians in Abyssinia in
1868 (Medal). Served in the Egyptian war of 1882 (.Medal, and Khedive's Star).
'^ Colonel W. Mussenden served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the 8th Hussars, including the battles of
Alma, Balaklava (horse shot), Inkerman, and Tchernaya, affairs of Bulganak and M'Kenzie's Farm, and siege of
Sebastopol (Medal with four Clasps, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served in Rajpootana in
1858-59, and was present at the capture of Kotah and battle of Kotaria (Medal with Clasp).
'" Colonel C. M. t'larke served in the 57th Regiment with the Column under Colonel Warre on the Tapteo river in
co-operation with the Central India Fieltl Force in 1858. Served also in the New Zealand war of 1861, and was
present at the operations before Te Arei. Also during the war iu 1863-66, present as Adjutant of the 57th at the
action of Katikara (mentioned in despatches),and as D. A.Q.M.General from June 1863 to March 1866 in the Province
of Taranaki, including the action neaj* Poutoko, capture of the Maori positions at Ahuahu, Kaitake, Mataitawa, and
Te Arei, operations at W area and Te Puru, and various minor affairs (repeatedly mentioned in despatches. Medal).
Served in the Zulu campaign of 1879; commanded the 57th liegiment in the engagement at Gingindhlovu
(mentioned in despatches) and relief of Ekowe; afterwards commanded the 2nd Brigade 1st Division, and sub¬
sequently was appointed to the command of "Clarke's Column"—a force of all arms—formed by Sir Garnet
Wolseley for the following objects: the second advance to Ulundi. the capture of King Cetj-wayo, the subjugation
of the Zulu tribes near the Middle Drift of the River Tugela, aud the pacification of Zululaud ; these objects were
successfully accomplished—thanked in General Orders (mentionedin despatches as having "performed the duties
of his responsible command in the most highly efflcient manner," Brevet of Colouei, CB., Medal with Clasp). On
the conclusion of the war was appointed Commandant G-meral of the Colonial Forces in Soutii Africa.
<•' Colonel C. J. East served with the 8ind Regiment in the Crimea from the 2nd September 1S55, and was
present at the siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp and Turkish Medal). Also in the Indian campaign
in 1857, and »-as severely wounded at Cawnpore on the 26th November (Medal). When belonging to the 41st
Regt. served as Assistant Quarter Master General with the Chittagong column of the Lushai E.'cpeditionary Force
in 1871-72 (mentioned in despatches, received the thanks of the Governor-General in Council, Medal with Clasp, and
Brevt t of Major). Served in the latter part of the Zulu war of 1879 as Deputy Adjutant and Quarter Master Gene¬
ral, and was present in the engagement at Uluudi (mentioned in despatches. Brevet of Colonel, Medal with
Clasp"!.
°' Colonel W. D. Bond served in the Zulu war of 1879, and was present in the engagement at Ulundi—severely
wounded (mentioned iu despatches, Brevets of Lt.Colonel and Colonel, Medal with Clasp). Served in the Boer
war of 1881.
" Colonel R. M. Rogers served with the 44th Regiment in the Crimea from the 27th Aug. 1855, including the siege
and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp for Sebastopol,and Turkish Medal). Served also iu the China campaign in
i860, including the action of Sinho, and was severely wounded at the storming of the Taku Forts (mentioned iu
despatches, promoted Captain unattached, Victoria Cross, and Medal with Clasp): together with Private John
M'Dougall, 44 Foot, and Lieut. E. H. Leuou, 67 Foot, he was awarded the ITtI " for distinguished gallantry in swim¬
ming tlie ditches and entering the North Taku Fort (China, 14th August i85o) bj- an embrasure during tlie assault.
They were the first of the English established on the walls of the fort, which they eutered in the order in which
their names are here recorded, each one being assisted by the others to mount the embrasure." Commanded tho

'■'■' Colonel Ball-Acton served with the 51st Light Infantry in Burmah fjom Feb. 1853 to the end of the war, and
was present with Captain Irbj^'s Detaehment of four Companies with Brigadier General Cheapo's Force during
the whole of the successful oi)erations in the Monabew dittrict, ending in the a-^sault and capture, on the 19th
March 1853, of the stronghold oi the Burmese chief Dyattoon (Medal with Clasp for Pegu). Served with the 51st
Light Infantry throughout the Afghan war of 1878-80, during the latter part of the war in command of the
regiment, aud was present at the attack and capture of Ali Musjid (several times mentioned in despatches, CB.,
Medal with Clasp).
''- Colonel Lord Wm. P. E. Seymour served as a Midshipman with the Baltic Fleet in 1854 (Medal). Served with
the 2ud Battalion Coldstreara Guards iu the Egyptian war ol 1882, and was present in the eniragemcnt at Tol-el-
Mahuta, and at ilie battle of Tel-el-Kebir (Medal with Clasp, 3rd Class of the Osinanieh, and Khedive's Star).
'i" Colonel B. L. Forster served as Aide de Camp to Major General Pratt during the New Zealand warof 1860-61,
(mentioned iu despatches. Brevet of Major, and Medal).
'" Sir Baker Creed Russell was at Meerut with the Carabineers at the outbreak of the Sepoy mutiny, and at
Kurnaul when Colonel Gerrard was killed ; was afterwards present with Seatou's Moveable COiUmn at the battle
of Gungaree, wdiere—his throe senior ofiieers being killed—he commanded the Squadron of his Regt., and
a Detachment of the 9th Liineers ; again, on the 17th Dec. 1857, he commanded the Cavalry in the action ot I'uttcali,
where over 700 S.-pjys wore killel,—"T.) Lieut. Russell," writes Sir Thomas Seaton in his despatch, "who
