War Services of General Officers of lioijal Marine Forces.
' General Schomberg sorved with the Baltic Expedition in 1855 (Medal), and commanded Marine Artillery of
a Division of gunboats at the bombardment of Swealjorg (mentioned in despatches, and promoted to Brevet Major).
Commanded the R.M. Artillery with the Brigade in China in 1857-39, including the blockade of the Canton river,
was in command of the Mortar Battery at the bombardment of Canton, and present at the assault and capture
(Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal with Clasp).
■* Lieut.General Barnard served in the Royal Navy in S3-ria in 1840-41, including the blockade of Alexandria
(Turkish Medal, and Naval War Medal with one Clasp). Served as Lieutenant R. Marine ArtiUerj- on board H.M.S.
Firebrand on the S.E. coast of America from :844 to 1S48 ; took part in the operations of the combined English and
French Sqiuidrons in the River Parana iu 1846, including the action of Obligado, the landing storming and cap¬
ture of batteries; subsequent operations on the River Parana, concluding with the action at St. Lorenzo, on which
occasion he constructed a masked battery Rocket Batteiy on an island Soo j-ards from the enemy's guns, remaining
concealed for two days and nights, and materially aiding the passing of batteries at St. Lorcaizo by Men of Wai
with large convo^^of 120 merchant vessels on the 23th May 1846 (mentioned in despatches). Served on shore with
R.M. Battalion at Monte Video when besieged by General Orcb, performing the dutj' of Ac.ing Adjutant for 13
months. Proceeded to China in 1859 to take charge of K.M. Artillerj'serving on shore, and was senior Olficer
of the Corps in the Rocket Boats at the bombardment and capture of the Taku Forts on tie 21st August i86o.
Served as senior Ollicer in command of R.M. Artillery and R. Marines on board the Gun Boat Flotilla which pro¬
ceeded up the River Peiho two days after the capture of the Taku Forts and in advance of the Allied Armies. Took
possession of the Tientsin Forts and afterwards of the principal gate of that city, being ]ilaced in command of the
same till relieved by a force sent forward by the army. Appointed on loth September 1S60 to the command and
charge of the Siege Train Flotilla. Emplo^-od in transporting the Siege Train from the Taku Forts to Tungchow,
16 miles from Pckin (services offlciallj' acknowledged). Appointed to the staff of the 2nd Division R. Artillery on
4th Oct. 1S60 and served during the advance on Pekin and was senior Officer of Royal Marines at its surrender
(Medal with two Clasps, Brevet of Major, and C£.).
5 General Suther served with the R.M. Battalion on the North Coast of Spain during the Carlist war. Has
received the War Medal with Clasp., as also the Turkish Medal for services on the Coast of Syria in 1840-41. Com¬
manded the Battalion in Japan in 1864-66, present at the attack and bombardment of the Forts of Simonosakl
by the combined Fleets ; landed in command of Allied Brigades for the destruction of the five Forts and magazines
oil the 6th September 1S64. Commanded Brigade at the storming and capture of the eneny's stockade (men¬
tioned in despatches, CB., Colonel, and Officer of the Legion of Honor). Has the Good Service Pension.
7 General Penrose served with the Royal Marine Battalion on the Noi-th Coast of Spain in 1838. Also.in China
in 1841-42 during the operations in the Yang-tse-Kiang. Landed on 24th Oct. 1S56 for the protection of the British
factory at Canton; commanded the Royal Marines at the storming of the breach in the wall of Canton on 2Qth
October, and throughout the subsequent operations—mentioned iu despatches (Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp).
Served with the Battalion sent out for service in Japan in 1864-66, and was present at the bombardment of the
batteries at the Straits of Simonosaki, the entrance of the inland sea of Japan, and commanded a Battalion of Royal
Marines at the assault capture and destruction of the five batteries, stockade, magazines, and barracks, and during
Ihe shore operations, from the sth to 8th Sept. 1864 (mentioned iu despatches).
* Lieut. General Williams was severely wounded at Lagos, Western Africa, 26th Deo. 1851, in spiking the guna to
protect H.M, steamer Teazer, then agi'ound.
io Sir Charles W. Adair served iu Syria in 1840 (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal), and was slightly wounded
in the assault upon Gobail. Served before Sobastopol during its siege and fall, and with the R.M. Battalion at the
occupation of Kertch and Yoni Kale, as also at the surrender of Kinbourn (Medal with Clasp, 5th Class of the
Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Was present at the bombardment of the batteries at the Straits of Simonosaki, tha
entrance of the inland sea of Japan, and commanded a Battalion of Royal Marines at the capiuie and destruction
of the batteries, magazines, and baiTacks, and during the shore operations, from the 5th to the 8th Sept. 1864
(slightly wounded, and mentioned in despatches).
1* Major General M'Arthur served with the expedition to the Baltic in 1855 (Medal).
" Major General Pym served in the China Expedition of 1858-60, including the blockade of the Canton river, the
landing before, storm and capture of the city. In 1858 he served on the Staff of the Army as Capitain Superintendent
of the Canton Police Force (Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp).
'* Major General Gwyn served with the R.M. Brigade in the Crimea in iS33,and was also at the surrender of
Kiubouru (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
1' Colonel Cox was at the action with the batteries, and expulsion of the Russian garrison from Redoubt Kaleh,
19th May 1854, and variously employed on that coast; was the Senior Officer of R.M. Artillery at the attack by the
combined Fleets on the outer forts and works of Sebastopol on the 17th October, aud employed in the blockading
Force during the siege, until March 1855 (Medal with Clasp, 5th Class of the Medji<lie, and Turkish Medal).
"■ Major General Mcade served the Eastern campaign of 1834-55 withtheR.M. Brigade, including the battle of
Balaklava and siege of Scbastopol (Modal with two Clasps, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served
on the China Expedition of 1857-59, including the blockade of the Canton river, operations before and capture of
the city; afterwards as Quarter Master of the 2nd Battalion. Served with the expedition to the north of China
in i860, includingthe action of Sinho, taking of Tangku, stonn and capture of the North Taku Forts, and subsequent
operations (Medal with three Clasps).'

' Colonel Brj'dgos served with the Baltic Expedition in 1854 and 1855, and commanded a Mortar in the flotilla
during the bombardment of Sweaborg (Modal). Whilst serving in 11.M. ship Ocean was landed in command of
the Marines of the Fleet on several occasions during the Revolution in Japan in 1S68, including the cocupation of
Kobe.
