' Sir John Gough served during the war in China of 1840-42 as Deputy Quarter Master General and head of the
department; was present at almost every engagement during the expedition, and received the brevet rank of Major
and Lt.Colonel, together with the Companionship of the Bath (Medal). Served in the Gwalior campaign of 1843-44
4is Military Secretary to the Commander in Chief in India, and was present at the battle of Maharajpore (Bronze
Star). Aiipointed a Brigadier in the Army of the Sutlej 1845-46; commanded the 2nd Brigade of Cavalry at the
battles of Moodkee and Ferozeshah, and officiated as Quarter Master General of H.M.'s Forces in India at the
battle of Sobraon, where he was severely wounded (Medal and two Clasps). Served the Punjaub campaign of
1848-49 as Quarter Master General of H.M.'s Forces in India, and was present at tlie battles of Chillianwallah and
Goo,jerat (Medal with two Clasps), appointed Aide de Camp to the Qneen with Brevet rank of Colonel.
6 Major James served with the 17th Lancers in the Zulu war of 1S79, and was present in the engagement at
Ulundi -wounded and charger wounded (Medal with Clasp). Served in the Egyptian war of 1882 as Aide do Camp
lo Lt.Geiieral Willis, Commanding the ist Division, and waspreseut at the engagements of El Magfar, Tel-el-Mahuta
and Kassasiii (9th Sept.) and in the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (mentioned in despatches. Brevet of ilajor. Medal with
Clasp, 4th Class of the Medjidie, and Khedive's Star). Servediwith the expedition to the Soudan in 1SS5 as Deputy
Assistant Adjutant and Quarter Master General from the i6th March to the 18th A]iril; afterwards organised and
commanded the Camel Corps; was present in the engagement at Hasheen and at the destruction of Temai (men¬
tioned ill dcs])atehes. Clasp).
' Captain Hippisley served with theKing's Dragoon Guards in the Zulu war of 1879 in the squadron under Major
Marter, including the cavalry affair at Erzungayau (Medal with Clasp).
