131 The Honouralle Corps of Gentlemen-at-Arms.
J* Colonel Stewart served throughout the campaign in Syria in 1840,—at the Camp at D'Jouni as Acting Engineer,
the storm and capture of Sidon, surrender of Be3-rout, bombardment and capture of St. Jean d'Acre (War Jledal
with Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Served also on the West Coast of Africa from 1841 to 1844 ; commanded a de¬
tachment of Marines at the destruction of several Barracoons in 1842 and liberated 1,200 .slaves atKabenda, Ambriz,
Black Point, Loango, Punta da Linha, 23 miles up the river Congo ; and a second time at Kabenda, three miles
inland, when he was attacked by a much superior force, and after liberating the slaves and destroying the barra¬
coons effected a safe retreat to the beach with three men mortally wounded, closely pressed by a large forca
of armed Africans (mentioned in despatches). Served with the battalion of Royal Marines sent to Japan from 1S64.
to 1866, and was present at the bombardment of the batteries at the Straits of Simonosaki, the entrance of the
inland sea of Japan, on the 5th and 6th Sept. 1864.
li* Lt.Colonel Sandeman served with the ist Royal Dragoons in the Crimean campaign from the 6th Oct. 1S54,
and was present at the battles of Balaklava, Inkerman and Tchernaj'a, siege and fall of Sebastopol (Mc^^'i' with
three Clasps, and Turkish Medal).
i« Lt.Colonel Henry served in the 86th Regt. with the Malwa, Nerbudda, and Central India Field Force in 1857-5!?^
and was present at the siege and capture of Dhar, actions of JIundesoor and Goodarea,, siege storm and capture of
Chundaree, and also of the fort and town of Jhansi, battles of Betwa and Koonch, actions at andin front of L'alpee,
battle of Gowlowlee, capture of Calpee, battle of Jlorar, actions of the i6th and 19th June, and capture of the town
and fortress of Gwalior, acted as Aide de Camp to Brigadier Stuart in most of the latter engagements (Medal witSi
Clasp, four times mentioned in desi^atches, and Brevet of Major).
1' Major Wyatt served with the 14th Light Dragoons in tlie Persian expedition of 1857 (Medal with Clasp). Also
in the Central India Field Force under Sir Hugh Rose in 185S and was present at the siege and capture of Rahntgliur,
action of Barodia, relief of Saugor, capture of Gurrakota, forcing the Muddunpore Pass, siege and capture of
Jhansi (Jlodal with Clasp).
^* Captain Campbell-Walker served in the 79th Highlanders in the Crimea subsequent to the fall of Sebaslopol,
from 14th March 1856 to the end of the Russian War. Served also throughout the Indian campaign in 1S58-59 as
Aide de Camii to Brigadier Douglas, including the operations across the Goomtee, siege and capture of Lucknow,
and subscjuent operations on the March to the relief of Azimghur (mentioned in despatches. Medal with Clasp).
i'-* Major Wingfleld served with the ist Dragoon Guards throughout the campaign of i860 in China, and was pre¬
sent at the fall of the Taku Forts, and engaged in the action of Sinho, also those of the iSth and 21st September.
Commanded the Cavalry force sent to Tungchon with Mr. AVade to demand the giving up of the prisoners on tha
20th September, and present at the surrender of Pekin (Medal with two Clasps).
''" Lieutenant JIalcolmson served in the 3rd Bombay Light Cavalry with the Persian E.xpeditionary Force in
1856-57, including the assault and capture of Reshire, surrender of Busliire, expedition to Borazjoon, aiid action of
Khooshab (Victoria Cross, and Jlcdal with Clasp): was awarded the YiC under the following circumstances :—" On
the occasion of an attack on the enemy on the 8th February 1857, led by Lieutenant ColonelForbes, CB., Lieutenant
Moore, the Adjutant of the regiment, was, perhaps, the first of all bj' a horse's length. His horse leaped into the
square, and instantly fell dead, crushing down his rider, and breaking his sword as he fell amid the broken ranks
. of the enemy. Lieutenant Moore speedily extricated himself, and attemiitcd with his broken sword to force his way
through the'press; but he would assuredly have lost his life had not the gallant young Lieutenant Malcolrason,
observing his peril, fought his way to his dismounted comrade through a crowd of enemies to his rescue, and, giving:
him his stirrup, safely carried him through everything out of the throng. The thonghtfulness for others, cool
determination, devoted courage and ready activity shown in extreme danger by this young Officer, Lieutenant.
Malcolmson, appear to have been most admirable, and to be worthy of the highest honour." Served also with. thQ'
Central India Field Force, including the siege of Ratghur and fall of Calpco (Jledal with Clasp).
21 Lieut. Waller served in the Oude campaign in 1858, including the capture of the fort of Kaili (Jledal).
22 Colonel JIaster commanded the 5th Fusiliers at the relief of Lucknow in Nov. 1857, and served with it in
Outram's Force at the Alum Bagh in all the operations of the succeeding months, and commanded the Regt. at the
capture of Lucknow, as also throughout the Oude campaign of 1858-59, including the action of Dounderkeira and
Buxarghat, and capture of the Fort of Oomerea (several times mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Lt. Colonel, CB.,
Medal with two Clasps, and a year's service).
S'i Lieut. T. Williams served with the lothHussarsin the Crimea from the 6th July to the istOctober 1855,includ¬
ing the siege and fall of Sebastopol (Jledal with Clasp, and Turkish Jledal).
2* Lt.Colonel H. P. Vance served with the 38th Regiment in the Crimea from January to the 15th April 1855, ia
eluding the siege of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Also in the Indian campaign from Nov.
1857, and was present at the storm and capture of Jteeangunge, siege and capture of Luckno'.v, alfairs of Barree
and Nuggur (mentioned in despatches. Brevet of Jfajor, Jledal with Clasp).
" Captain Noel served with the 31st Regiment throughout the Sutlej Campaign of 1S45-46, and was present at
the battles of Moodkee, Ferozeshah, Buddiwal, Aliwal, and Scbraon (Medal and three Clasps).
'<• Major JI J. Battyc was present with the field force under Brigadier England in all its operations on its second
advance on and return from Kandahar in 1841-42. Also with Colonel Wymer's Brigade in the Urghundauii valiej'.
Present at the battle of Hyderabad (Jledal). Joined his regiment (the 2'ist) at the commencement of the outbreak
In the Southern Konkan. Served on General Outram's staff with the Light Field Force in Sawunt Warroe. Present
at the siege and occupation of JIunohur and JIunsontosh. Engaged with the advanced guard at Golior, 21st
Jan. 1845, and at Jloolis, 6th February—horse shot under him.
''' Lt.Colonel S.H. Clei-ke sers'cd with the 21st Fusiliers in the Eastern campaign of 1R54-55, includingthe battle of
Alma, siege and fall of Sebastopol, attack of the Redan on the i8th June, where he commanded the scaling-ladder
party, and was mentioned in despatches ; served as Adjutant at the fall of Sebastopol and expedition to Kiubourn
(Medal with two Clasps, Sardinian and Turkish Medals).
28 Colonel Cooch served with the 62nd Regiment in the Crimea from 12th Nov. 1S54, including the siege and
fall of Sebastopol and the sorties of the 5th 9th and loth Maj-, defence of the Quarries 7th June, nss.aiiUs of the
Redan on the iSth June (in command of the Wool-bag part3-'of his regiment) and 8th September (mentioned in
despatches. Brevet of JIajor, Jledal with Clasp, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Jledjidie, Sardinian
and Turkish Medals). Appointed Town Major in Sebastopol immediately after its fall for his services during the
siege and final assault.
-'■i Colonel B. Brown served throughout the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46, including the battles of Ferozeshah and
Sobraon (Jledal and Clasp). Burmese war of 1852-53, including the recapture of Pegu on 21st Nov., relief of its
garrison on 14th Dec, and operations in the vicinity (Jledal with Clasp for Pegu). Suppression of the Indian
mutiny, including the battle of Budleekeserai, siege of Delhi and assault of the Eedgate, wounded in five places, in
one dangerously (Brevet of JIajor, Jledal with Clasp). Served in the Indian N.W. Frontier war of 1863, and was
present at the attack and capture of the Conical Hill and Umbeyla (Clasp).
3" Lt.Colonel G. H. Pockhngton served with the i8th Royal Irish in the Burmese campaign of 1S52-53 (Jlcdal
with Clasp for Pegu). Served also in the Crimea from ist June 1S55, including the siege and fall of Sebastopol, and
attack of the i8th June (Jledal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
SI Major Braokenbury served with the 6ist Regiment in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, and was present at the
battle of Goojerat, and with the Field Force in ]nirsuit of the enemy to the Khyber Pass in February and JIarch
1849 (Medal with Clasp). Present with the expedition to the Euzofzie Country and at the attack and capture ol
insurgent villages on the iithand 14th Dec. 1849 (Jledal with Clasp). Served with the rank of Captain with the
Turkish Contingent and performed duty as an KngineerOfflcer in the Crimea in 1855-56 (Turkish Medal).
32 Lt.Colonel Scott served with the 42nd Highlnders throughout the Eastern campaign of 1S54-55, including the
battles of Alma and Balaclava, expedition to Kerlch and Yenikale, siege and fall of Sebastopol (Jiednl with three
Clasps, 5th Class of Medjidie and Turkish Jlcdal). Served also the campaign of 1857-58 against the mutineers in
India, including the actions at Cawnpore (6lh Doc. 1857), Seraighnt, Khodagunj, Slmmsabad, siege and fall of
Lucknow and assault of thcMartiniero and Banks' Bungalow, attack on the Fort of Rooyah, action at AU.vgunge,
attack and capture of Barcilly (Medal with Clasp). Embarked for the Gold Coast with the 42nd Highlanders and
served throughout the second phase of the Ashanti war in 1874. Was present at the battle of Amoaful; commanded
the Regiment at the cajiture and destruction of Becquah (mentioned in Sir A. Alison's report to Sir Garnet Wolseley
as haying hatl the particular direction of the withdrawal of the Rear Guard), battle of Ordahsu (slighl wound of
