of the operations of the war of 1863-66, including the actions at Katikara andKoheroa, assault and capture of the
fortified position of Rangiriri [CBA, advance through and occupation of the Waikato country—with actions at
Haerini and Orakau. At the conclusion of the Waikato campaign Sir Duncan Cameron, commanding the Army
in the Field, in his despatch of the 4th March 1864 to the Secretary of State for War, after thanking individually
the Officers of his StafT, including Colonel Gamble, adds:—"I beg more particularly to recommend Colonel Gamble,
Deputy Quarter Master General, to your Lordship's favourable notice, as to this Officer's ability, zeal, and unceasing
attention to his important duties, I am chiefly indebted for the success of these operations."'^ He was also present
at the subsequent operations at Tauranga, and at the Gate Pah, and in the campaign of 1865 in the Wanganui
country, including the action at Nukumaru, affair of Kakaramea; and again in the campaign under Sir Trevor
Chute, at the assault and capture of Otapawa, at Waikoko, and in the arduous forest march round Mount Egmont
(repeatedly mentioned in despatches, rank of Colonel, and Medal). The 3rd Class of the Medjidie has been coiiferred
on him by the Viceroy of Egyiit in acknowledgment of his services as Governor of His' Highness' son, Prinoa
Hassan, during his stay in England in 1868-69.
5° Lord Clarina served with the 95th Regiment in the Crimea from the 22nd Nov. 1854, including the siege and
fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Major, Knight of the Legion of Honor, Turkish Medal, and 5th Class
of the Medjidie). Served also in the Indian mutiny campaign in 1858, including the siege and capture of Kotah,
battle of Kota ke Serai, general action resulting in the capture of Gwalior, siege and capture of Pouree (men¬
tioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp).
51 Sir John Ross served with the Rifle Brigade in the Eastern campaign, including the battles of Alma and
Inkerman, and siege of Sebastopol, until February 1855 (Medal with three Clasps, Brevet of Major, sth Class of the
Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Sei-ved also in the Indian campaign of 1857-58, including the action of Cawnpore,
siege and capture of Lncknow. Commanded the Camel Corps at the capture of Galpee and during the subsequent
campaign m Central India (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, CB., Medal with two Clasps). Served
with the Rifle Brigade in the North West Frontier of India campaigns of 1863-64 (Medal with Clasp). Commanded
the Bengal troops during the operations in the Malay Peninsula in 1875-76 (mentioned in General Orders of the
Government of India, Medal with Clasp). Commanded the Indian E.\peditionary Force which was sent to the
Mediterranean in 1878. Served in the Afghan war of 1878-80 ; oomiuanded the and Division Gabul Field Force
which defeated the enemy at Shekabad (received the thanks of the Governor General in Council and of tiie Com¬
mander in Chief in India); accompanied Sir Frederick Roberts in the march to Candahar in command of the
Infantry Division and as 2nd in command, and was present at the battle of Candahar (mentioned in despatches,
received the thanks of both Houses of Parliament, KCB., Medal with Clasp, and Bronze Decoration).
" Major General Willis was present with Gen. Havelock's Field Force in the actions of Oouao and Busecrut Gunge
on 29th July 1857 ; commanded the 84th Regiment in the actions of Buscerut Gunge on the 5th Aug., Boorbeaka
Chowkee on 12th Aug., at Bithoor on the 16th Aug., at Mungawar on 21st Sept., at Alumbag'h on 23rd Sept., and
relief of Lucknow on 25th Sept. (wounded in left knee and right thigh) ; commanded the right Column at the
storming of the Hirn Khannah on 16th Nov., and was thanked in division orders by General Havelock. Was
with General Outram's Force at the Alumbagh from 26th Nov. 1857 to 9th March 1858—commanded the 84th up to
24th Jan.; present at the fall of Lucknow ; accompanied General Lugard's Force, and present at the relief of
Azimghur; proceeded with Brigadier Douglas's column in pursuit of the rebel chief Koer Sing, and present in the
actions of 17th and 20th April (mentioned in despatches, C£., and Brevets of Major and Lt.'Colonel, Medal with
two Clasps, and grant of a year's .service for Lucknow).
" Major General Hon. Percy Feilding served the Eastern campaign of 1854 as Brigade Major to tl e Brigade of
Guards at the battle of Alma (mentioned in despatches) and on the Staff of the ist Division at; the battles of Bala-
klava and Inkei-man (severely wounded), and siege of Sebastopol (Brevet of Major, Medal with four Clasps, Knight
of the Legion of Honour, 5th Class of the Medjidie, Turkish Medal, and CB.).
'^ Major General C. C. Fraser served as Orderly Officer to Brigadier Campbell at the affair of Munseata near
Allahabad, on the 5th Jan. 1858, and subsequently with the 7th Hussars in the Indian mutiny campaign from Feb. to
July 1858, and from Dec. 1858 to March 1859, and was present at the affair of Meengunge, siege and capture oJ
Lucknow, affairs of Barree and Sirscc (horse wounded), action of Nawabgnnge (severely wounded whilst leading
a squadron against a body of Gazzie fanatics, mentioned in Sir Hope Grant's despatch for " most conspicuous
gallantry," Brevet of Major), throughout the Trans-Gogra campaign, including the affair near Churda and pursuit,
taking the Fort of Meejeedia, attack on Bankee with pursuit to the Raptce, advance into Nepaul and affair at
Bitkaghat (Victoria Cross, Medal with Clasp) : received the UOT " for conspicuous and cool gallantry, on the 31st
December 1858, in having volunteered, at great personal risk, and under a sharp fire of musketry, to swim to the
rescue of Captain Stisted and some men of the 7th Hussars, who were in imminent danger of being drowned in
the River Raptee, while in pursuit of the rebels. Major Fraser succeeded in this gallant service, although at the
time partially disabled, not having recovered from a severe wound received while leading a Squadron in a charge
against some fanatics, in the action of Nawabgunge, on the 13th Juno 1858." Served in the Abyssinian campaign
in i868 as Commandant at Head Quarters and in charge of the outposts, and was present at the action of Arogee
and capture of Magdala (mentioned in despatches "for unceasing vigilance," CS., and Medal).
'8 Major General Bulwer served the Eastern campaign of 1854 with the 23rd Fusiliers, including the battle of
Alma and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with two Clasps, and Turkish Medal). Served in the Indian mutiny of 1857-55,
including the siege and capture of Lucknow, and operations across the Goomtee under Outram. Commanded a
Column of troops with the Left Wing of the 23rd Fusiliers in the Bueswarra district of Oufle, including the capture
of the Fort of Selimpore, and two other successful engagements at Julrowlee and Poorwah, commanded Left Wing
of the 23rd at the defeat of Benee Madho by Lord Clyde at Buxarghat (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, CB., Medal with Clasp,
and mentioned in despatches).
»'■' Major General Elkington served with the 6th Eegt. in the Kaffir wars of 1847 and 1851-52 (Medal),—during
which ho was present at the operations in the Fish river, Waterkloof, Amatolas, and Trans-Kei expeditions in com¬
mand of the Light Company. He served as Assistant Quarter Master General to the Ottoman Contingent from
its formation in May 1855 to the close of the war, for which he received the Brevet rank of Major, the 4th Class of
the Medjidie, and the Turkish Medal. Served as Aide de Camp to Sir John Michel during the Indian mutiny in
1858 in Central India (Medal, and Brevet of Lt.Colonel). Served with the China Expeditionary Force in i860 aa
Aide de Camp to Sir John Michel from the landing of the Army to the surrender of Pekin (Medal with Clasps, and
promoted to an unattached Majority).
^1 Major General Newdigato served with the 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade the Eastern campaign of 1S54 and up to
July 1855, including the battles of Alma and Inkerman (wounded), and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with three Ulasps,
Brevet of Major, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served in the
Zulu war of 1879 in command of the and Division, and was present in the engagement at Ulundi (Medal with
Clasp, and CB.).
" Major General Dillon served with the gSth Regiment in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-9 (Medal); also with
the Flank Companies at the forcing of the Kohat Pass under Sir Colin Campbell and Sir Charles Napier in Feb¬
ruary 1850 (Medal with Clasp); with the Rifle Brigade (2nd Battalion)in the Crimea subsequent to the i'allofSebas.

November 1857 to December 1859, including the actions at t^awnporc (dangerously wounded, two bayonet and one
sword wounds), siege and capture of Lucknow (Brevet of Major), Oude campaign of 1S58 under Sir Hojje Grant,
»nd with Lord Clyde in his Trans-Gogra operations, as Brigade Major to Brigadier Sir Alfred Horsford, and sub-
8»quently as his principal Staff Officer on the Nepaul Frontier, in his advance into Ncpaul, and during the second
Trans-Gogra campaign; also as Brigade Major to Brigadier Holdich during the operations on the Oude Frontier in
conjunction with 12,000 Nepaulese troops, which resulted in the capture of large bodies of mutineers who had
crossed the Nopaul boundary (Medal with Clasp). Proceeded to China in i860 as Assistant Adjutant General of
Major General Sir R. Napier s Division, and was present during that campaign at the capture of the Taku Forts,
Ac., and the advance to Pekin (Medal with Clasps, and Brevet of Lt.Colonei). Served the Abyssinian campaign aa
Military Secretary to Lord Napier, and was present at the capture of Magdala (mentioned in despatches, CB.,
Aide de Camp to the Queen, Colonel, and Medal).
" M.ajor General W.G. Cameron served irtthe Grenadier Guards during the Eastern campaign of 1854, including
the battle of Alma and siege of Sebastopol as Assistant Engineer right attack. Was severely wounded on the 20th
October while in command of the Volunteer Sharpshooters of the isf Division (Medal with two Clasps, Knight of the
