' General Custance served in the Crimean campaign from 14th Aug. 1855, including the battle of Tcheniaya,
Biege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, Order of the Medjidie, 5th Class, and Turkish Medal). Commanded
the Cfirabineers at the outbreak of the mutiny at Mecrut on lotli May 1857, also in the subsequent campaign of that
year, including the battles of the Hindun, the 30th and 31st May (horse killed); battle of Badlckaserai (horss
wounded), aifair of 9th June, and siege of Delhi. Commanded the whole of the Irregular Cavalry under Sir Hop®
Grant, at the storming of the city on the 14th September. (Jommanded the Cavalry of Brigadier Showers' Column
during the subsequent operations. In command of the Carabineers and Hodson's "Horse captured the fortress of
Kanound with 22 guns and j^i lacs of treasure. Also in command of the Carabineers and 2nd Bengal Fusilieri?., sur¬
prised the city of Furruck Nuggur, taking the Nawab. Commanded a Wing of the Carabineers in the action of Bun-
kagaon on nth Oct. 1858, also three squadrons during the subsequent campaign in Oude, including the actions of
Mahoudipore, Russoolpore, advance on and capture of the fortress Mitoudee, the actions of AUygnng and Bishwa,
joined the Agra Field Force by forced marches, and commanded a Wing of the Carabineers in pursuit of Tautia Topee
for three months through Eajpootana and Central India, during which frequently commanded detjiched Columns
(thanked by the Governor General in Council, and frequently mentioned in despatches. Medal with Clasp, Brevet of
Colonel, and CB.).
♦ Major Watson served with the King's Dragoon Guards in the Zulu war of 1879; was Staff Officer at Conference
Hill from 13th June to 3rd August, and served afterwards with the squadron of the Regiment in Baker Russell's,
Flying Column (Medal with Clasp).
' Major Swaine served with the 17th Lancers in the Zulu war of 1S79, and was present in the engagement at
triundi (Medal with Clasp). Served in the Boer war of 1881 as Aide de Camp to Major General Drury Lowe, Com¬
manding the Cavalry Brigade. Served in the Egyptian war of 1882 as Aide de Camp to Major Geneial Drury Lowe,
Commanding the Cavaliy Division, and was present at the engagements of El JIagfar and Tel-el-Mahuta, the two
actions at Kassasin, the battle of Tel-el-Kebir. and the capture of Cairo (mentioned in dcspaSches, Brevet of
Major, Medal with Clasp, 4th Class of the Medjidie, and Khedive's Star).
* Captain Dewar served with the King's Dragoon Guards in the Zulu war of 1879. Served afterwards with the
Mounted Infantry (94th Regt.) throughout the operations against Sekukuui, and was present at the attack and
capture of the stronghold, 28 November 1879—severely wounded (Medal with Clasp).
» Lieut. W. Harrison served as a volunteer with the 4th Dragoon Guards in the Egyptian war of 1882, and was
present in the engagement at Mahsama, the two actions at Kassasin, the battle of Tel-el-Kebir, and at the capture
of Cairo (Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star).
>" Lieut. Waring served as a volunteer with the 4th Dragoon Guards in the Egjrptian war of 1B82, and was
present at the action at Kassasin on 28th August (Medal, and Khedive's Star).
