282a The South Staffordshire Regiment.
' General the Hon. St. George Pole-? served in the Eastern campaign in 1854-56, as Assistant Commissioner at
the Head Quarters of the French Army, and was present; at the battles of Alma, Balaklava, Inkerman, and
Tchernaya, the siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with four Clasps, Hrevet of Lt.Colonel, CB., Otiicer of the
Legion of Honor, 4th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served as Military Secretary to the expe¬
ditionary force in China from March 1S57 to Feb. 1B60; was present at the capture of Canton in Dec. 1857 (Brevet
of Colonel), and other affairs in the neighbourhood. Served throughout the campaign as British Commissioner
at the Head Quarters of the French Army in China from Feb. i860 to March 1861, and was present at the storming
and capture of the Taku Forts, the actions of the i8thand 2ist September—in the latter commanded 200 French
Mounted Artillerymen, 50 Chasseurs d'Afrique, and a squadron of Fane's Hori-e— horse shot (mentioned in
French despatches, and made Commander of the Legion of Honor), and subsequent advance on Pekin (good
service pension. Medal with three Clasps).
'■' Lt.Colonel Thackwell served with the 39th Regiment in the Crimea from 31st Dec. 1854, including the siege and
fall of Sebastopol, and attacks of the j8th June and 8th September (Medal with Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie,
and Turkish Medal).
^Lt.Colonel Tucker served with the 80th Regiment with the left attack during the Bhootan Expedition of 1865
(Medal with Clasp). Served in the Perak operations in 1876, part of the time as Brigade Major ; commanded the
left attack in the operations against Sekukuni in 1878 ; commanded the 80th Regiment" in the Column underColonel
Rowlands on the Swazi border in the Zulu war of 1879, ^"d subsequently the troops at Luneberg ; also commanded
the regiment in 'Wood's Cohimn during the march through Zululaud and in the engagement at Ulundi (Cii., Medal
with Clasp).
■* Lt.Colonel Eyre served with the 38th Regiment in the Crimean campaign from lothNov. 1854 to 10th May 1855,
including the siege of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Modal). Served in the Indian campaign
from Nov. 1857, including the assault and capture of Meeangunge, siege and capture of Lucknow, and affairs
of Barree and Nugger (Medal with Clasp).
' Lt. Colonel Creaghserved with the 50th Regiment in the Crimea, subsequent to the fall of Sebastopol, from the
nth Sept. 1855 to the end of the Russian war. Also in the New Zealand wars from Nov. 1863 to 1866, and was present
at the storm and capture of Rangiawhia, repulse of the enemy's attack on the Camji at Nukumaru (in command of
a party of the 50th), the capture of the fortified village of Ketemari and the Putahi Pah (Medal). Served with
a detachment of the 80th Regiment in the Expedition to Perak under General Colborue in 1875-76 (Medal with
Clasp). Served in the Transvaal in the operations against Sekukuni in 1878. Served in the Zulu war of 1879.
first in command of three companies of the 80th Regt., and afterwards as Commandant of the Leydenburg District.
Served subsequently in the Transvaal until invalided, in the operations against Sekukuni in 1S79 (Medal with Clasp).
^ Major Bradshaw served with a detachment of the 80th Regiment in the Perak Expedition in 1875-76 (Medal
with Clasp).
" Major Stone served with the Military Train in New Zealand from 1864 to 1867 (Medal).
' Major Roworth served with the 80th Regiment in the Perak exuedition in 1876 (Medal with Clasp). Served
with the 80th Regiment in the Zulu war of 1879. Commanded the District of Lydenburg, Transvaal, from 2nd
February till April 1879, and again from June till October, and acted as Ordnance Ofiicer at Lydeubutg from January
to December 1879 (Medal with Clasp).
' Major Saunders served with the 80th Regiment with the left attack during the Bhootan Expedition of 18C5
(Medal with Clasp). Served as Su])erintendeut of the Transvaal Volunteer Force during the operations against
Sekukuni in 1878-80 (Medal with Clasp).
"> Captain Cameron served with a detachment of the Both Regiment in the Perak Expedition in 1B75-76 (Medal
with Clasp).
11 Major Anderson served as Superintendent of Volunteers in the Transvaal during the operations against
Sekukuni in 1878, and with the 80th Regiment on the Swazi border in 1879, and during the invasion of Zululand and
the engagement at Ulundi (Medal with Clasp).
'^ Captain Crofton proceeded on special service to South Africa in June if 79, and was employed as Staff Officer
and Deputy Assistant Quarter Master General at Durban from October 1S79 till April 1880 (Medal).
'^ Captain Cole served with a detachment of the 80th Regiment in the Perak Expedition in 1875-76 (Medal with
Clasp). Served with the 80th Regiment during the latter part of the Zulu war of 1879 (Medal with Clasp).
'* Major Prior served with a detachment of the Soth Regiment in the Perak Expedition in 1875-76 (Medal with
Clasp). Proceeded on special service to South Africa at the commencement of the Zulu war in 1879; and was present
with the Frontier Light Horse in the engagement at Zlobane Mountain. Was Orderly Officer to Colonel BuUer at
the affair at Upoko River, and was presentin the engagement at Ulundi and in the reconnaissance on the previous
day (twice mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Major). Served in the subsequent operations against Sekokuni as
Staff and Orderly Officer to Colonel Harrison (Medal with Clasp).
'* Captain Sherrard served as Staff Officer in the left attack against Sekukuni in 1878, and as Acting Adjutant
of the 80th Regiment during the operations of the Column under Colonel Rowlands on the Swazi border in 1879,
and during the invasion of Zululand and the engagement at Ulundi (Medal with Clasp).
'^ Captain Potts served as District Adjutant of the Transvaal during the operations against Sekukuni in 1878;
was with the 80th Regiment in the Column under Colonel Rowlands on the Swazi border in 1879, and during the in¬
vasion of Zululand and the engagement at Ulundi (Medal with Clasp),
" Captain Chamberlain served in the Transvaal in charge of two 6-pounder guns in November and December 1878;
was with the Soth Regiment in the Column under Colonel Rowlands on the Swazi border in 1879, and during the in-

1* Captain Hast served with a detachment of the Soth Regiment in the Perak expedition in 1876 (Medal with Clasp).
Trained, equipped and commanded a mule battery of 7-pounders on the Zulu border in 1878, for which he received
the thanks of his Excellency Lieut.General Lord Chelmsford. Served throughout the left attack against Sekukuni,
and had charge of two 6-pounder guns in the Column under Colonel Rowlands on the Swazi border in 1S79, and
during the invasion of Zululand and the engagement at Ulundi (Medal with Clasp).
1' Lieut. Ussher served with the Soth Regiment in the Transvaal in November and December 1878, in the Column
under Colonel Rowlands on the Swazi border in 1879, and during the invasion of Zululand and the engagement
at Ulundi (Medal with Clasp).
"> Lieut. Lyons served with the Soth Regiment in the operations against Sekukuni in 1878, and afterwards as
District Adjutant and Remount Officer at Lyden'mrg. Served also in the operations against Sekukuni in 1879,
and was present at the storming of the stronghold (Medal with Clasp).
"^ Captain Horsbrugh served la the Perak Expedition in 1S76 (Medal). Served in the operations against Sekukuni
in 1S78 and also in 1879, and was present at the storming of the stronghold (Medal with Clasp).
22 Lieut. Daubeney served with the Soth Regiment in the left attack against Sekukuni in 1878, in the Column under
Colonel Rowlands on the Swazi border in 1879, and during the invasion of Zululand and the engagement at Ulundi
(Medal with Clasp).
^^ Captain Moore served with a detachment of the Soth Regiment in the Perak Expedition in 1876 (Medal with
Clasp). Served with the Soth Regiment in the operations against Sekukuni in 187S and throughout the Zulu war
of 1879, part of the time as District Adjutant of the Transvaal (Medal with Clasp).
