• Lieut.General Benson commanded the 17th Lancers in the Crimea from 14th Jan. 1855, including the battle
of the Tchemaya, siege and fall of Sebastopol, and commanded the Squadron of the Light Brigade in the night
attack on the Russian outposts on the 19th Feb. 1855 (Medal with Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish
Medal). Served in the Indian mutiny campaign of 1857-59, and commanded the and Cavalry Column, Malwa Division,
in various operations in Central India and in pursuit of the rebel forces under Tantia Topee and the Rao Sahib,.
who were attacked and defeated with great loss at Zerapore on 29th December 1858 by the 2nd Cavalry Column
(Colonel, CB., and Medal).
2 Lt.Colonel Drew served with awing of the 7th Hussars, comprising part of the Doaba Field Force employed-'
against Native tribes on the North West Frontier of India, in November and December 1863, and commanded a
squadron at the action of Shubkudder on the 2nd January 1864 (Medal with Clasp). '
3 Major Peel servedinthetoist Fusiliers throughout thelndianN.W. Frontier campaign of i863and was present at ■
the storming of the Conical Hill, also at the attack and capture of the Crag Piquet and Umbeyla (Medal with Clasp).
* LtColonel M'Calmont served on the Red River Expedition in 1870. Accompanied Sir GarnetWolseley to the Gold
Coast in September 1873, as Aide de Camp (Ashanti Medal). Was appointed a military attache to the British
Embassy at Constantinople on the outbreak of the Russo-Turkish war in 1877, "■nd accompanied the Turkish
armies in the field throughout the campaign in Armenia (Brevet of Major). Accompanied Sir Garnet Wolseley
to South Africa as Aide de Camp in 1879, and was present in the subsequent operations, including those against
Sekukuni (mentioned in despatches. Brevet of Lt. Colonel, Medal with Clasp.) Served in the Marri expedition
under Brigadier General Macgregor (mentioned in despatches).
5 Captain the Hon. A. J. G. Byng served in the Zulu war of 1879 with the Field Force in Natal and the Transvaal'^
(Medal with Clasp).
