54 War Services of the Colonels.

Lindsay conveyed his approbation of these operations in the following terms,—" The Lt.General recognizes that
to your vigorous movements are due the speedy dealing of the Border and the return of a feeling of security to the
inhabitants of the district."
*' Colonel Andrew Nugent served in the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the Scots Greys, including the
battles of Balaklava, Inkerman, and Tchernaya, tiege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with three Clasps, and
Turkish Medal).
™ Colonel F. F. Hamilton served with the 4th Regiment throughout the Eastern campaign in 1854-55, including
the battles of Alma (wounded) and Inkerman, and the whole of the siege operations before Sebastopol until its
fall (Medal with three Clasps, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
" Colonel Brice served with the 17th Regiment in the Crimea from the ist .January 1855, including the siege and
fall of Sebastojiol, assaults of the Redan on the iSth June and 8th September, also at the bombardment and sur¬
render of Kinbourn (Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Major, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
" Colimel G. F. C. Bray served in the Abyssinian campaign in 1868 as Assistant Adjutant General of the 2nd
Division (mentioned in Despatches, Brevet of Lt Colonel, and Medal).
^* Colonel F. Hardy served as Orderly Officer to Brigadier Russell at the second relief of Lucknow, at the Alum-
bagh, aud at the siege and capture of Lucknow; also present with the 84th Regiment at the relief of Azimghur and
pursuit of Koer t<ing (mentioned in despaiches. Medal with two Clasps).
^^ Colonel Hon. W. H. Herbert served with the 46th Regiment in the Crimea from the 31st July 1S55, including
the siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
" Colonel Hon. B. M. Ward served the Eastern campaign of 1854 and up to the 3rd May 1S55 with the 47th
Regiment, including the battle of Inkerman, siege of Sebastopol, "and sortie of 26th October (Medal with two
Clasps, Sardinian and Turkish Medals).
5' Colonel I'reer served as a volunteer with the 75th Regiment at the action of Budlee-ke-Seria on 8th June 1857
and in all the subsequent affairs in which that Regiment was engaged duriug the siege of Delhi. Commanded
the " Stables " Piquet at the capture of four g-pounders at " Ludlow Castle," on the 12th August; was severely
wounded near the Burn Bastion on the afternoon of the assault of Delhi (twice mentioned in despatches, Brevet ot
Major, Medal with Clasp).
^^ Colonel S. A. Madden served with the 51st Light Infantry throughout the Burmese war of 1852-53, was on
board the E.I.C. steam-sloop Sesostria during the naval action and destruction of the enemy's stockades on the
Rangoon river; served during the succeeding three days' operations in the vicinity (including the storming of
the White House Redoubt), and at the storm and capture of Rangoon; also at the assault and capture of Bassein
19th May, and repulse of the night attack on Prome 8th Dec. 1852 (Medal with Clasp for Pegu). Also in the
Umbeyla expedition in 1863. Commanded the Regiment in the Jowaki campaign in 1877 (mentioned in despatches.
Medal with Clasp). Also commanded the 51st Regiment throughout the Afghan war of 1878-9, including the
taking of Ali Musjid (mentioned in despatches, CB., and Medal with Clasp).
''" Colonel R. 0. Stewart sei-ved in the Indian campaign of 1857-58, was present at the storm and capture of
Meangunge, and served as D. A. A. General to Sir Edward Lugard's Division—at the siege and capture of Lucknow
in March 1858—severely wounded and horse wounded in three places (mentioned in despatches. Brevet of Major,
Medal with Clasp).
"' Colonel H. E. T. Williams served in the Burmese war from January 1852 (Medal with Clasp for Pegu). Served
also in the Indian mutiny campaign in 1858-59 as Adjutant of the 3rd Madras European Regiment at the battle
of Banda, and as Acting Assistant Adjutant General to the Saugor Field Division in the action of Punwarree—
mentioned in despatch (Medal with (jlasp for Central India).
*^ Colonel Hon. S. Mostyn served with the 23rd Fusiliers in the Crimea in 1855, including the siege of Sebastopol
and attack of the Redan on the i8th June (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Served in the Indian mutiny
campaign of 1857-58, including the relief of Lucknow by Lord Clyde, defeat of the Gwalior Contingent at Cawu-
pore, siege and cajiture of Lucknow, and operations across the Goomtee, Trans-Gogra campaign when the rebels
were driven into Ntpaul (Medal with two Clasps). Embarked for the Gold Coast in command of the 2nd Battalion
23rd Fusiliers, and commanded the Head Quarters throughout the second phase of the Ashanti war, in 1874,
including the capture of Borborassie, battle of Amoaful, capture and destruction of Becqua, battle of Ordahsu,
and capture of Coomassie (several times mentioned in despatches, CB., Medal with Clasp).
<•* Colonel Sprot sei'ved with the Force under General Woodbum in the affair at Auruugabad in 1S57 (Medal) ;
afterwards served as acting Executive Engineer of the Rajpootana Field Force and received the commendation of
General Roberts commanding, and of the Bombay Government, for his " great energy and ability " in the con¬
struction of baiTacks for the European troops at Neemuch.
^" Colonel Hon. E. G. Curzon served in India during the Mutiny in 1857-58 (Medal).
'" Colonel J. Miller served with the loth Regt. in the Sutlej campaign in 1846, and was present at the battle of
Sobraon (Medal). Served with the 3rd Dragoon Guards in the Indian Mutiny campaign of 1858-59, and took part
in the pursuit of Tantia Topee. Served with the 3rd Dragoon Guards in the Abyssinian campaign, and com¬
manded Cavalry outposts on the Bashilo river during the storming and capture of Magdala (mentioned in de¬
spatches, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, and Medal).
^' Colonel Wiseman-Clarke served with the 93rd Highlanders the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the
battles of Alma and Balaklava, siege and fall of Sebastopol. capture of Kertch and Yenikale (.Medal with three
Clasps, and Turkish Medal). Also the Indian campaign of 1857-59, including relief of Lucknow by Lord Clyde,
battle of Cavvnpore on 6th Dec, pursuit of the enemy and capture of their guns at Seraighat, action at Kallee
Nuddie; taking of Futtehghur, expedition to Mhow under Brigadier Hojie, siege and capture of Lucknow (men¬
tioned in Sir E.iiUgard's despatches), and subseciuent affairs ending in the capture of Bareilly (Medal with two Clasps).
"' Colonel Middleton served with the 58th Begt. at the assault and capture of Kawiti's Pah, also during 1846-47
■in the southern part of New Zealand, including the repulse of the attack on Wanganui (mentioned in despatch) and
subsequent affairs there (Medal). Served as a Volunteer during the Santhal rebellion in India. Served in the Indian
campaign of 1857-58;—as Orderly Officer to General Franks in the action of Sultanpore, and subsequent affairs on
the advance to Lucknow (three times mentioned in despatches); as Aide de Camp to General Luard at the siege and
capture of Lucknow, and storming of the Martiniere, Banks' House, Begum's Kotoe, and Moulvy's Mosque (men¬
tioned in despatch, and Brevet of Major); as Deputy Judge Advocate, and Aide do Camp to General Luard at the
relief of Azimghur and action of Jugdespore (mentioned in despatch); as Brigade Major at the reduction of Dehayoii
Tirhol (mentioned in despatch), and other of the Oude Forts, also at the surrender of Amethie (Medal with Clasp).
'" Colonel C. Alexander served in the Crimea from 20th Dec. 1854, including the siege and tall of Sebastopol
(Medal with Clasp, Turkish Medal, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
"' Colonel Hon. James C. Dormer served in the Crimea from 30th June 1855 as Adjutant to 13th Light Infantry,
.and was present at the siege and fall of Sebastopol, and battle of the Tchemaya (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish
Medal). Also served in the Indian mutiny, including the relief of Azimghur and campaign in Gorruckpore in 1858
(mentioned in despatches); was afterwards appointed Aide de Camp to Lord Clyde, and present at the actions
during the Oude and Trans-Gogra campaign of 1858 (mentioned in despatches. Medal, and Brevet of Major). Pro¬
ceeded to China in 1860 as Assistant Adjutant General to the Expeditionary Force, and was present throughout the
operations of that canniaign, including the capture of the Taku Forts, advance on and entry into Pekin (promoted
to an Unattached Miijority, Medal with two Clasps).
"' Colonel G. P. I'revost served with the 23rd Fusiliers in the Crimea from the 17th June 1855, including the
siege and fall of Sebastopol and assaults of the Redan on the i8th June and 8th September—wounded (Medal with
Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Served at the siege and capture of Lucknow, mentioned in despatches (Medal with
Clasp).
"' Colonel E. M. Manningham-Buller served with the Rifle Brigade in the Kaffir wa.r of 1846-47, and in that of
1852-53 (Medal).
''* Colonel Blackett served the Eastern campaign of 1854 with the 93rd Highlanders and that of 1855 with the
Coldstream Guards, including the battles of Alma and Balaklava, siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with three
Clasps, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
"* Colonel R. B. Chichester served in the mutiny iu India in 185—58, and was present when the 8ist Regiment
