The OBJECTS ol the Society are:—
(1) To help Soldiers and Sailora by providing tliom witli tbe name and address of a"Friend"lii
eaoii parish or ward tbrouKhout the Kingdom, to whom they may be commended on
discharge from the Ar r,y or Navy for aid in obtaining Kmployment or other forms of Heln
suited to their needs. »ioiii
(2) In time of War to arrange for accommo tation of Biolf and Wounded Convalescent Soldiari
and Sailors in Temporary Convalescent Homes and Private Houses
13 To establish and maintain Convalescent Homes and Homes of Rest for disoharged Soldier"
and Sailors who are disabled and necessitous, and to contribute to the support of such
cases in their own homes, if considered neceesary.

To teach useful trades to men discharged as medloallv unfit, who, by reason of their disabilltv
consequent on their service, are unable to take ordinary omploymeut, and to make sue)
cases as far as possible self-supporting by disposing of the work they turn out
Employment was found during l90b-9 for .30,706 discharged Soldiers and Sailors, while 59 SZ'
were assisted with money or clothing. 6,945 Sick and Wounded Convalescents from the South
.African War have been sent to temporary Convalescent Homes. The Society's Permanent Home
at Portsmouth accommodates from 20 to 25 disabled men ; lOK Cottage Homes in Counties are
established for disabled married Soldiers of Crimean, Indian Mutiny, and other wars 18 men are
in the Home and " orkshops at Brookwood, while 63 are employed daily in the WorkshoDs in
