out with Private Wythe to a German sap. Lieutenant Anderson entered
the sap. and Private W>-the crept, along the edge. They met and shot

Next day they returned to the Bap and attacked another party of Germanfi,
who retired, leaving a cloak, some bombs, a periscope, etc., behind. These

For conspicuous gallantry and resource on the 30th October. 1915, when at great
personal risk, he made a reconnaissance in broad daylight of the new St,
Eloi craters, which resulted In bomb posts being established and com-
municatton made. Two previous attempts to effect tliis reconnaissance had
failed owing to the Germans being in occupation.
Previously, on 18th August, 1913, Lieutenant Chew displayed great gallantry at
Hooge.
