throughout ihe Ashanti war of 1873-74, includins- the battle of Amoaful, battle ofOrdahsu and capture of Coomassie
(mentioned in despatches, Victoria Cross, and Medal with Clasp) : was awarded the YC "for his distinguished
bravery and zealous, resolute, and self-devoted conduct at the battle of Ordahsu, on the 4th February 1874, while
serving under the immediate orders of Colonel Sir JohnChetham McLeod, XCB.,ot the 42nd Regiment, who com-
manded the Advanced Guard. Sir John McLeod was an eye-witness of his gallant and distinguished conduct on
the occasion, and considers that this officer's fearless andresolute bearing, beingalways in the front, urging on and
encouraging hu unarmed working party of Fantee labourers, who were exposed not only to the fire ofthe enemy but
to the wild and irregular fire of the native troops in the rear, contributed very materially to the success of the
day. By his example he made these men do what noEuropeanparty waseverreuuired to do in warfare, namely, to
work under fire in the face of the enemy without a covering-party." Served withthe Burmese Expedition in 1886-

defence of the Sungahs at the Umbeyla Pass and at the attack on and storming ofthe Conical Hill and destruc-
tion of Lalloo on the 15th December, also in the action at Umbeyla and destruction of the village at the foot ofthe
Bonaii Pass on 16th December which ended in the complete rout ofthe enemy and the submission of the hill tribes
on the i7tb December (Medal with Clasp).

paign of 1852-53, and present at the affairs ofthe Black Mountain and taking of the fort. Served as Adjutant, of the
Hazara Goorkha Battalion throughout the Mahsood VVuzeeree campaign of i860 with the force under Brigadier
General Chamberlain, and was pre-sent at the repulse of the attack on the British Camp at Paloseen, storming the
Heights of Burrurah, and in the subsequent operations leading to the occupation of Raneegorum and burning of
Mookeen (Medal with Clasp).

Orakau (mentioned in despatches) in command of a Battery; also during the vVanganiii campaign, and commanded

present at the attack and defeat of the natives at Kaitaki (Medal).
