March and 6th Sept. 1855), including the battles of Alma and Balaklava, and siege of Sebastopol (lledpl with three
Clasps, Brevet o? Major, and Turkish Medal).
■^'■' Major General H. G. De la Posse served in the Artilleryatthe siege of Cawnpore in 7857 under Major General
Sir Hugh M. Wheeler (mentioned in despatches and allowed to reckon one year's extra service). Served in the Artil-
lery with the Force under Major Generals Havelock and Outram, and present at the crossing into Oude, actions of
Mungarwar and Alumbagh, and entry into Luckuow ; commanded two guns in an advance piquet during the
subsequent defence of the Residency ; present at the retaking of Cawnpore (mentioned in despatches, received
the thanks of the Governor General in Council, Medal with two Clasps, a year's e.xtra service). Served with the
Sikkim Field Force as Staff Officer under Colonel Gawler in i86t (mentioned in despatches, received the aooro-
bation of the Governor General in Council). Served in the Indian N.W. Frontier war of 1863, and was present at
the attack and capture of the Crag Piquet, the Conical Hill, and Umbeyla (mentioned la despatches, Medal with
Clasp).
^'^ Major General T. A. de Moleyns served in the Crimean campaign from July 1855, including the siege and fall
of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Med.al).
^'* Sir Thomas Dennehy served iu the Sonthal campaign of 1855-56, and commanded a detachment of two
Companies in action with the Insurgents at Chundkundra. Served also during the Indian Mutiny of 1857-58,
and commanded the Head Quarters of the Allahabad Military Police Battalion at the actions of Manickpore and
Gadham.iron (twice thanked by the Governor General, Medal).

"" Major General J. Desborough served with the China E.xpedilionof i860, and was present at Sinho, Taugku, cap-
ture of the Taku Forts, actions near Tan£chow, and surrenderor Pekin (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal with two Clasps).
'"' Major General A. A. Des VtEux served in the Persian Expeditionary Force in 1857, at the bombardment and
capture of the forts of Mohumra and the pursuit of the Persian army (Medal with Clasp) . Served ivith the Horse
Transport service in the China Expeditionary Force under Lieut.General Sir Hope Grant in i860, present at the
•landing at Pehtang, action of Sinho, capture of Tangkow, assault and capture of the Taku Forts; accom-
panied the advance of the army on Tien-Tsin and Pekin, including the battles of Chaug-kia-Wan and Tungchow,
and occupation of Pekin (Medal wit'u two Clasps).
22^ Sir Francis de Winton served the Crimean campaign from January 1855, including the siege and fall of
Sebastopol, in the Trenches with the siege train, and bombardments of 9th April and 6th and 17th June— wounded
(Medal with Clasp, Knight of the Legion of Honor, and Turkish Medal). Commanded the expedition sent agains+
the Yonnies, on the West Coast of Africa, in 1887-88 {CB., and Medal with Clasp),
2^6 Major General W. A. Dick served with the 3rd Bombay Cavalry on the frontiers of Upper Sind from April to
Dec. 1846. Served with the Central India Field Force tinder Sir Hugh Rose in 1858-59, and was present at the siege
and capture of Ratghur, relief of Saugor, capture of Garrakota, and in command of a party of the 3rd Bombay
Cav.al rj' which surprised and cut up the enemy's outlying Picquet during the advance on that fortress (speciallj' men-
tioned) at the Maethone Pass; present at the siege and capture of Jhansi and taking of Calpee ; commanded the
Head Quarters Wing of the 3rd Bombay Cavalry on the march from Etowa to Devpora, when the Rear Guard was

^^' Major General W. R. Dickinson served with the Persian Expeditionary Force in i856-57,ar.d waspresent at the
storming of Reshire, capture of Bushire, and battle of Khooshab (Medal with Clasp).
=^^ Major General E. J. Dickson served in the Kafir war of 1846-47 (mentioned in despatches. Medal).
'■'^ Major General M. C. Dixon served in the Eastern campaign in 1855, in the Trenches with the siege train before
Sebastopol, and at the bombardments of April and 6th and 17th June (Medal with Clasp, Brevets of Major and
Lt.Colonel, Victoria Cross, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie,and Turkish Medal) : received
the VC under the following circumstances :—" On the 17th April 1855, about 2 p.m., when the Battery he com-
manded was bloNvn up by a shell from the enemy, which burst in the magazine, destroyed the parapets (at Sebas-
topol) , killed and wounded ten men , disabled five guns, and covered a si.xth with earth ; for most gallantly reopening
fire with the remaining gun before the enemy had ceased cheering from their parapets (on which tbey had mounted;
and fighting it until sunset, despite the heavy concentrated fire of the enemy's batteries, and the ruined state of
his own."
23* Major General T. F. Dixon served with the 3qth Regiment in the Crimea from December 1854 to February
1855, including the siege of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Tuikish Medal).
^" Major General M. F. Downes served in the Crimean campaign from May to August 1855, including the siege
of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
'^"> Major General A. W. Drayson served in the Kafir war in 1847 (Medal).
-" Major General F. B. Drew served in the Afghan war 1878-79, and was present in the engagement in the
Koorum Valley on the 28th November 1878, and in command of the ist Brigade at the capture of the Peiwar Kotal
in the 2nd December ; commanded the same Brigade in the operations in the Hariab and Khost Valleys, including
some minor engagements (mentioned in despatches, CB., and Medal with Clasp).
"' Major General C. W. Dun served with Brigadier Watson's Force in the Saugor and Nerbudda Territories from
1st March to 25th April 1843, and from loth October to 8th November 1843. Was present during the Chinese riots
at Singapore in May 1854.
2^" Major Geiicral H. A. Dwyer served in the Sutlej campaign in 1S46 and was present at the battle of Sobraon
(Medal). Served also in the Indian Mutiny campaign iu 1857-58, including the siege and capture of Delhi, and
capture of Jhujjur (Medal with Claspj.
'■''■^ Major General W. H. S. Earle served in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including the battles of Chillian-
vrallah and Goojerat (Medal with two Clasps). Present at an affair in the Boree PassinNov. 1853; also in operations
against the Afreedies in March 1855 (Medal with Clasp). Served in the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1857-58 (Medal).
'■'^' Major General C. Eccles served with the 4th Regiment throughout the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, includ-
ing the Liattles of Alma (carried the Colours) and Xnkerman, siege and fall of Sebastopol, and assaults of the i8th
June and 8th .September (Medal with three Clasps, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal) .
"* Major Genera! H. Edmeades served in India in 1857-58, and was present at the action of Kalee Nuddee,
battle of Cawnpore on 6th Dec, and action of Sherghur Ghat (Medal). Served in the Boer war of 1881 with the
Natal Field Force.
'■"" Major General M. Elliot served in the suppression of the Indian Mutiny ; toik part in the actions of the 30th
and 31st May 1857 on the Hmdun, commanded his battery throughout the latter action ; was present at the battle
of Budleekeserai, the siege and assault of Delhi (severely wounded in the head on the 15th September), and several
minor actions — slightly wounded on two occasions (Medal with Clasn) . Served throughout the Hazara campaign
of 1868 on the Black Mountain in command of the Peshawar Mountain Battery (Medal with Clasp). Served in the
Egyptian war of 1882 in command of the Siege Train (mentioned in despatches. Medal, 3rd Class of the Medjidie,
and Khedive's Star).
2''' Major General H. F. W. Ely served with the 99th Regiment throughout the campaign of i860 in China, including
the actions of Chankinwan and Paliatchowandsurrenderof Pekin (Medal with Clasp). Served throughout the Zulu
war of 1879. Commanded a large convoy of ammunition and provisions following Pearson's Column in the advance
on Ekotve, and was present during the investment of that place by the enemy. Was afterwards Commandant of
one of the forts on the coast line of communication (Medal with Clasp).
'■^'^ Major General A. L. Emerson served m the Crimea in 1855-56 after the fall of Sebastopol, but previous to the
conclusion of the armistice and until the evacuation of the Crimea by the Allies.
^" Major General J. Emerson served ttiroughout the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46, including the battles of Mood-
kee, Ferozeshah, and Sobraon (Medal and two Clasps).
'" Major General F. Etcson served with the i8th Royal Irish throughout the Burmese war in 1S52-53, including the
capture ofMartaban, Rangoon, Prome, and the Donabew stockades (Medal with Clasp for Pegu).
