■n the war of i36o in China upon the Quarter Master General's Staff, and was present at the assault of the Taku
Forts, and in all the engagements throughout the campaign (promoted Major -unattached, Medal with two Clasps).;
Commanded the expedition sent in 1870 from Canada to the Red River Territory for the suppression of the Rebel
Government established at Fort Garry against the Queen's authority, and was created a Knight of St. Michael and St:
George and Companion of the Bath for his services upon that occasion (Medal). AVas Governor and Commander
of the Forces on the Gold Coast during the Ashanti war of 1873-74 (received thethanksof bothJiouses of Parliament,
promoted to be Major General for distinguished service in the field, GCMG. KCB. and Medal with Clasp). At a
meeting of the Common Council of the Corporation of London it was unanimously resolved as follows : — " That the
honorary freedom of this City, with a sword of the value of 100 guineas, be presented to Major General Sir Garnet
Joseph Wolseley, KCB. GCMG., in recognition of his gailant services in the British Army, and especially in reference
to the distinguished ability and gallantry displayed by him in his command of the expedition to the Gold Coast, by
which he obtained results conducive to peace, commerce, and civilisation on the continent of Africa. And this Court
desires also to record its admiration of the patient endurance of hardship exhibited, and the valuable co-operation
and assistance rendered to Sir Garnet Wolseley, by the gallant officers and men of both services and of all arms engaged
in the expedition." Was sent to South Africa in June 1879 as Governor and High Commissioner of Natal and lands
adjacent, with local rank of General. Completed the subjugation ol the Zulus and brought the Zulu war to a con-
clusion. Afterwards overpowered Sekukuni's hostile nation and destroyed their stronghold ; and finally subdued
the disaffected Boers and completed the annexation of the Transvaal (GCB. Medal with Clasp). Was Commander in
Chief of the British Expeditionary Army throughout the Egyptian war of 1882, in which campaign that Army in the
space of 25 days effected disembarkation at Ismailia, traversed the desert, and seized the capital of Egypt together
with its citadel and the rebel chief, having in that period fought and defeated the enemy five times — finally at Tel-el-
Kebir, where the enemy's strongly entrenched position was taken at the point of the bayonet after an arduous night
march, all his guns captured, and his army overwhelmed (received the thanks of both Houses of Parliament, raised
to the peerage, promoted General for distinguished service in the field, Medal with Clasp, 1st Class of the Osmanieh,
and Khedive's Star). Commanded the forces in the Soudan campaign in 1884-85 (received the thanks of both Houses
of Parliament, was raised to a Viscount in the peerage, and received two Clasps).
5 Colonel H. T. Fenwick served in South African war in 1899-1900, and was present at relief of Kimberley ;

7 Major Wilson served in the South African war in 1899-1900 as Aide dc Camp to Major General Baden-Powell

9 Captain FitzGerald served in the campaign on the North West F'rontier of India under Sir William Lockhar.t
in 1897-98 as extra Orderly Officer to the General Officer Commanding the Malakand F eld Force (Medal with

12 The Marquis of Tullibardine served in the campaign in the Soudan under Sir Herbert Kitchener in 1898 with
rank of Bimbashi, as Staff Officer to Lt.Colonel Broadwood, Commanding the Cavalry of the Egyptian Army,
and was present at the Cavalry reconnaissance of 41I1 April, and at the battles of the Atbara (mentioned in
despatches) and Khartoum (mentioned in despatches, DSO. British Medal, and Khedive's Medal with two Clasps):
Served in the South African war in 1899-1902, attached to the Royal Dragoons, as Staff Officer to Brigadier
General Burn-Murdoch, and afterwards as Lt.Colonel commanding the Scottish Horsedwo Regiments), which corps
he was appointed to raise for service in South Africa 15th Dec. 1900. Took part in the relief of Ladysmith,
including the action at Colenso ; the operations of the 171I1 to 24th Jan. 1900, and the action at Spion Kop ; the
operations of the 5th to 7th F"eb., and the action at Vaa! Krantz ; the operations on Tugela Heights, 14th to 27th
Feb. 1900, and the action at Pieter's Hill ; and the operations in Natal March to June 1900. Afterwards com-
manded the Scottish Horse in the operations in the Eastern and Western Transvaal (three times mentioned in
despatches, Brevet of Major, Medal with five Clasps, King's Medal with two Clasps).
18 Major the Hon. Hanbury-Tracy served in the operations in Uganda in 1897-98 (mentioned in despatches, 3rd
Class of the Brilliant Star of Zanzibar, Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp). Served in the South African war in
1899-1900 on Special Service, and took part in the defence of Mafeking (mentioned in despatches, Medal with three
Clasps). Served in operations in Somaliland in 1901 with the Abyssinian Forces (mentioned in despatches, CMC, Medal
with Clasp).
