60 Major Hardy was awarded the Bronze Medal of the RoyalHumane Society for his efforts to rescue a police
constable from drowning at Nagpore.India, on the 10th February, 1889. Captain Hardy was, however, unsuccessful.
61 Lieut. Hardyman was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for assisting to save two girls
who had beeu surrounded by the tide at Plimont, Jersey, on the 29th September 1894.
63 Sir Reginald Clare Hart was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving the life of a
Frenchman from drowning in the harbour of Boulogne-sur-Mer, on the 27th July 1869, he himself having received
on this occasion several severe wounds of the head and face from striking, in a leap from the pier, some sunken
piles or rocks ; has also received for the same service a Medallion from the Mayor, in the name of the citv of
Boulogne, and a Medal of Honour of the First Class from the President of the French Republic. Colonel Hart
has also been awarded by the Royal Humane Society a Silver Clasp for having, on the 15th December 1884, gone
to the rescue of a gunner who was in imminent danger of drowning in the Ganges Canal atRoorkee, and whose
life he assisted in saving.
64 Colonel C. L. Harvey was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving two lives from
drowning when on duty as Deputy Assistant Quarter Master General disembarking the 4th Regiment from
H.M.S. Tamar at Queenstown on the night of the 4th August 1874.
65 Colonel H. De la M. Hervey was awarded the Bronze Medal ot the Royal Humane Society for having,
on the 10th April 1879, rescued a dufladar of the 1st Punjab Cavalry who had been carried away from his horse
by the force of the current on the River Arjandah, near Candahar.
66 Major Hodder was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a native of Mauritius
in Port Louis Harbour on the 10th May 1886.
66 + Lieut. Hoskyns was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving the life of a native
carrier of the West African Frontier Force, who was bathing at Bathurst, on the 16th December 1902. The man
swam from the shore and was caught in a current which swept across the bay. Lieut. Hoskyns reached the man
*rom the far side, but being unable to carry him to the nearest part of the beach, swam with him across to the
opposite side.
67 Captain Davidson-Houston was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for his efforts to
rescue a man from drowning in the New River, British Honduras, on the 1st July 1896. The water was 30 feet
deep, and there were alligators in the river.
68 Major Hovell was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a soldier from
drowning in a lake at Poona on tne 21st September 1891.
69 Lt.Colonel Hunt was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for jumping into the River
Liffey at Dublin on the nth July 1857, and rescuing Joseph Ward from drowning.
69 t Lieuts. Keighley and Pitcher were each awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society, for
attempting, on the 13th April 1904,10 rescue Lieut. G. P. Hood, who was drowned in a lake at Agarmalwa,
Central India.
70 Captain Layard was awarded Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for plunging into Peiho River, China,
on the 6th August 1900, and saving a Chinese man from drowning. The night was dark and the tide strong.
70 t Lieut. Leckie- lowing was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for attempting, on the 8th
May, 1Q02, to save the life of Corporal Black, who, whilst crossing the Orange Biver, sank in 15 feet of water
Lieut. Leckie-Ewing reached the man, but was compelled to release him in order to save himself.
71 Lt. General Le Cocq was awarded Silver Medal of the Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners' Royal Benevolent
Society for gallant conduct on occasion of wreck of transport Julia at Kurrachee, Scinde, on 30th June 1857.
78 Captain Le Marchant was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 8th July
1884, saved Lieut. S. B. Graham from drowning in the Nile at Assouan.
73 Captain Lethbridge was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having saved a French-
man named Beauvaiz from drowning. Beauvaiz was watering a horse in the sea when the animal became
unruly and threw its rider in deep water. Captain Lethbridge, although he had lost au arm in South Africa,
leapt into the sea and rescued the drowning man.
74 Captain Lindesay was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 28th July
1902, saved the life of a rifleman of the 4th Goorkha Rifles, who fell through a hole in the landing stage on the
River Peiho, China. The night was very dark, and heavy rain was falling. Captain Lindesay jumped into the
water and supported the man until ropes were brought and both were rescued.
70 Major Logan was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for assisting to save three ladies
from drowning at Pentire, near Newquay, Cornwall, on the 13th August 1878,
77 Major Lovett was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving from drowning a
boy who had fallen into the River Thames from the Chelsea Embankment, and been carried about 150 yards by
the tide, on the 7th September 1891.
77 t Captain H. T. Lumsden was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on 8th July
1902, saved the life of Lieut, and Quarter Master Cameron, who was carried away whilst bathing. Lieut. Luins-
den swam out 70 yards through a rough sea, and succeeded in bringing Lieut. Cameron to land.
78 Captain Lj'le was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a coolie from drowning
in a tank at Madras en the 12th April 1891.
79 Colonel M'Calmontwas awarded the Silver Medal ofthe Royal Humane Society for saving a man from drown-
ing at Kingstown Harbour on 18th Julv 1871, he having jumped from the pier into sea, a distance of 26 feet.
80 Colonel M'Rae was awarded the Silver Medal and the Stanhope Gold Medal of the Royal Humane Society for
the following act: — At 5 a.m. on the 5th of October 1886, a trumpeter of the Boyal Artillery fell into a well at Rawul
Pindee. Captain Holmes, Captain M'Rae, and others proceeded to the spot, and let down a well rope of sufficient
length to reach the soldier, and capable of sustaining him for a time. Both Captain M'Rae and Captain Holmes
volunteered to go down, but as the former was a light weight it was decided that he should make the trial, Captain
Holmes demurring, as he wished to undertake the risk himself. The rope being very weak, it could not possible
have borne Captain Holmes's great weight. Captain M'Rae was accordingly let down by means of a four-strand
tent rope, and on reaching the water found the soldier practically insensible ; he therefore decided to go up with
him. Captain Holmes was at the head of the rope, and his strength enabled him to lift both completely. After
hauling up about 10 or 15 feet, the rope broke, precipitating Captain M'Rae and his charge to the bottom of the
well. A second attempt was made, and both were brought to the surface. The depth of the well was 88 feet, of
which 12 feet was water. It was quite dark at the time. With reference to this case, the following divisional order
by the Duke of Connaught was issued to the troops in his command:— "His Royal Highness the Major General
Commanding, having been made acquainted with the circumstances connected with the rescue from drowning in a
well at Rawul Pindee of Trumpeter S. Meehan, B.A., desires to record in divisional orders his deep sense of the
devotion and gallantry displayed on the occasion by Captains M'Rae and Holmes, 45th Sikhs, and to convey to those
officers his warm appreciation of their conduct, which reflects the greatest credit upon themselves, their regiment,
and Her Majesty's service generally. His Boyal Highness will have much pleasure in bringing the circumstances of
the case to the notice of his Excellency the Commander-in-Chief."
81 Captain Macdonald has been awarded the Albert Medal of the 2nd Class in recognition of his gallantry in
assisting to save the life of a Sepoy of the 27th Bengal Infantry, who, with certain Native officers and men of
that corps, had been overwhelmed in an avalanche near the summit of the Lowarai Pass on the 16th May 1898.
83 Lieut. Mackworth was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for rescuing a Chinese coolies
from 30 feet of water in a pond at Tieut in, China, on 5th June 1905.
84 Captain T. 0. Mackenzie was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society under the following
circumstances: — Captain Mackenzie was returning to Europe on the Saqhalien, being invalided home, when an
apprentice fell overboard in the Ionian Sea. Captain Mackenzie jumped into the sea and supported the
apprentice for half an hour, until they were picked up by a boat from the ship.
85 Captain Macnaghten was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for rescuing two men
from drowning at Monk's Bridge, Yorkshire, on the 21st June 1895. He had to dive twice before he got the men
to bank, but succeeded in saving the lives of both.
66 Major Malcolm was awarded the Albert Medal of the 2nd class by the Queen for his efforts in attempting to
save the life of a comrade at Dalhousie, in India.
