I Sir Jan S. M. Hamilton served with the 92nd Highlanders in the Afghan war or 1878-80. and was present in
the engagement at Charasiah on 6th October 1879 including the subsequent pursuit of the Afghans (mentioned
in despatches) and in the operations around Cabul iu December 1879 (mentioned in despatches, Medal with two
Clasps). Served in the Boer war of 1881— severely wounded (mentioned in despatches. Served with the Nile
Expedition in 1884-85 with the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders ; was Captain of the Guard to Major Genera
Earle, Commanding the River Column, and was present at the action of Kirbekan (mentioned in despatches, Brevet
of Major, Medal with two Clasps, and Khedive's Star). Served with the Burmese Expeditionin 1886-87 (mentioned
in despatches, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal with Clasp) . Served with the Chitral Relief Force under Sir Robert Low
in 1895 as Assistant Adjutant andQuarter Master General of the Lines of Communication (mentioned in despatches,
CB. and Medal with Clasp). Commanded 3rd Brigade Tirah Expeditionary Force in the campaign on the North
West Frontier of India under Sir William Loekuart in 1897-98 (mentioned in despatches, two Clasps). Served in
the South African war in 1899-1902 as Chief of Staff in Natal, and in command of the Mounted Infantry Division.
Took part in the operations in Natal in 1899, including the actions at Elandslaagte, Rietfontein, and Lombard's
Kop ; the defence of Ladysmith, including the action of the 6th Jan. 1900 ; operations in the Orange Free State,
Feb. to May 1900, the actions at Houtnek, Vet River, and Zand River ; in the Transvaal in May and June 1900, in-
cluding the actions near Johannesburg, Pretoria and Diamond Hill; in the Transvaal, east of Pretoria, July to
29th Nov. 1900, and the action at Lydenburg ; in the Transvaal, west of Pretoria, July to 29th Nov. 1900, and the
action at Zilikat's Nek. Afterwards served as Chief of Staff in South Africa, and directed the operations in the
Western Transvaal (three times mentioned in despatches, promoted Lieut. General for Distinguished Service in
in the Field. XCB., Medal with six Clasps).
9 Colonel Malcolm served with the Cameron Highlanders throughont the Egyptian war of 1882, and was
present at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir— twice wounded ( iledal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star). Served throughout
the Nile Expedition in 18S4-S5 on special service as Staff Captain with the whaler boats (Clasp). Served in the
South African war in 1900-02 with the 1st Battalion Cameron Highlanders, and took part, as 2nd in Command, in
the operations in Orange Free State (March to May, 1900), including the action at Vet River and Zand River ; opera-
tions in the Transvaal in May and June, including actions near Johannesburg, Pretoria, and at Diamond Hill;
operations in Orange River Colony (July to 29th Nov. 1900), including actions at Wittebergen and Ladybrand (men.
fcioned in despatches, DSO). Commanded the Battalion in operations in Orange River Colony in Dec. 1900, and Jan.
1901 ; in operations in EasternTransvaal (Jan. to Apr. 1901), including action at Lake Chrissie ; in the operations in
Western Transvaal (June to Sept. 1901) ; and in the operations on the Borders of Natal and Zululand in Sept. and Oct.
1901 (mentioned in despatches, Medal with four Clasps, King's Medal with two Clasps).
II Lt.Colonel Scott-Elliot served with Cameron Highlanders throughout the Egyptian war of 1882, and was pre-
sent at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star) ; also served throughout the Nile Expedition
in 18S4-85 with the Cameron Highlanders (Clasp). Served throughout the operations of the Soudan Frontier Field
Force in 1885-86 in command of the Cameron Division of the British Camel Corps, and was present in the engage-
ment at Giniss.
14 Lt.Colonel Riach served throughout the Nile Expedition in 1S84-85 with the Cameron Highlanders (Medal with
Clasp, and Khedive's Star). Served throughout the operations of the Soudan Frontier Field Force in 1885-86 with
the Cameron Highlanders, and was present at Kosheh during its investment, at the reconnaissance on the 16th
December, and was Staff Officer at Kosheh Fort during the engagement at Giniss.
18 Major Douglas Hamilton served during the latter part of the Nile Expedition in 1885 with the Cameron High-
landers (Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star). Served throughout the operations of the Soudan Frontier Field
Force in 1885-S6 with the Cameron Highlanders, and was present at Kosheh during its investment and in the
engagement at Giniss.
