2 Colonel Stuart served with the field force under Brigadier Murray, R. Artillery, employed en the
30-mile radius round Shanghai during the summer of 1863 (Medal). Also with the Anglo-Chinese Contingent in
Colonel Gordon's Taeping campaigns of 1863-64, and was present during the operations before Soochow and
at the siege and storming of Changchow (Chinese Medal, and 2nd Class of the order of the Precious Star).
Took part in the negotiations at Fort Zelandia, Island of Formosa, in 1869. (Mentioned in despatches). Was
selected in 1873 to raise re corps of Military Police for the treaty district of Newcbwang, Southern Manchuria,
at that time infested by mounted banditti, and subsequently commanded the force embodied (received the thanks
of the British and Italian Ministers and of the Imperial Commissioner, with the Brevet of Colonel in the
Chinese army and the Cross of the Italian Crown .ith Class). Served with the Nile Expedition in 1S84--85 as
Boat Officer and Staff Officer and afterwards as Commandant at Dal (Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star).
Received the thanks of the Egyptian Government and the 4th Class of the Osmanieh for his services as Aide
de Camp to General Valentine Baker Pasha, and Acting Deputy Inspector General of Gendarmerie in 1886-88.
Commandant at Ba>-e and on Line of Communications, Ashanti Campaign, igco (twice mentioned in despatches,
CB. ; Medal.)
3 Sir Simon Macdonald Lockhait served in the Egyptian war of 1882 with the 1st Life Guards, and was present
in the engagements at El Magfnr and Mahsama, in the two actions at Kassasin (28th August), and at the battle
Df Tel-el-Kcbir (Medal with Clasp).
4 The Earl of Minto served with the Turkish Army during the campaign on the Danube in 1877, and was
present at the crossing of that river and at the bombardment of Nikopolis (Turkish Medal). Was attached to
the Head Quarters' Staff in Afghanistan in 1878 (Medal). Employed in the Egyptian Expedition 1882, and was
wounded at the action of Mahutu (mentioned in despatches, Medal, Bronze Star, 4th Class of the Medjidie).
Was Chief of the Staff during the North West Rebellion in 1885, and tookpart in the action at Batoche (mentioned
in despatches, Medal with Clasp).
The Charter granted by Queen Anne, dated 31st December. 1703, confirms to the Royal
Company of Archers "as now constituted under a President and Council" . . . "according to
their former use and wont" . . . "all laws and acts sanctioned in their favour in time of our
illustrious predecessors, and the rules and constitutions framed by them for their own better
government" ; . . . "and we will and grant, and for us and our foresaids give and concede " to
our foresaid Royal Company, and the Council thereof "full power of assuming such other
Members as they may judge lit, and of nominating . . . such other officers who to them shall
seem proper " subject to the Sovereign's approval under His Majesty's hands.
