75 I_ - War Services of Colonels Retired by Sale, Sfc.
onboa.i I the E.I.C. steam-frigate Ferooz during the naval action and destruction of the enemy's stockades on the
Rangoon River ; served during the succeeding three days' operations in the vicinity (including the storming of the
White Houso Redoubt) , storm and capture of Rangoon, and repulse of the] night attack on Prome (Medal with Clasp
for Pegu).
23 Sir William Colville served with the Rifle Brigade in the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the
battle of Alma, siege aud fall of Sebastopol (Medal with two Clasps, Brevet of Major, Knight of the Legion of
Honor. Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
25 Colonel J. H. Cooper served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the 7th Fusiliers, including the sortie of
26th Cvt., battle of Lnkerman, and siege of Sebastopol ; appointed Aide de Camp to Colonel Yea, and also present
at the attack on tue Quarries on 7 th June (wounded 8th June), and assault of the Redan on 18th June (Medal with
two Clasps, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
27 Coioael G. A. Curzon served as Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion of the Rifle Brigade in the Indian campaigns
of 1857-58, including the actions at Cawnpore, siegu and capture of Lucknow; subsequently with Ross' Camel
Corps and present at the battle of Golowlee and capture of Calpee (Medal with two Clasps).
28 Colonel G. S. Davies served in the Crimea with the ioth Hussars frim 30th June 1855, including the battle of
Tchernaya and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medall. Served with the Carabineers the
Indian campaigns of 1857-59, ana ""as present at the outbreak of the Sepoy mutiny at Meeruton the lothMay 1857,
the actions of the Hin^un, 30th and 31st May, battle of Budleekeierai, s'iege and fall of Delhi, and subsequent
operations under Brigadier Showers ; also the affair of Kerkrowtie, taking of Bareilly, affair j of Majidia, Ckurdall,
and Bankee, and pursuit to the River Raptee (Medal with Clasp).
30 Lord Digby served in the expedition to the Soudan in 1885 with the 1st Battalion of the Coldstream Guards,
and was present in the engagement at Hasheen, at that near Tofrek on the 24th March, and at the destruction of
Temai (Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star).
31 Colonel Donovan served against the Pitcani tribe in 1828 under Colonel Somerset. Commanded an advanced
post in the neutral territory, Cape of Good Hope, in 1832 and 1833. Served against the insurgent Boers in 1845. Was
actively employed throughout the whole of the Kaffir war of 1846 and 47 (Medal), and commanded the Advanced
Guard in forcing the passage of the Fish river Jungle from Fort Peddie to Trompeter's Dritt in May 1846, when
the Troops were engaged with the whole ofPato's tribe for upwards of three hours; previous to the action on the
Gwanga he led as-a volunteer a small- partyinto the "jungte,"Where lie ' Tia"<Ta~p ersonal rencontre with four armed
Kaffirs (the chief Zeto and one of his captains being of the party), two of whom he slew single-handed. For the
above services he received the Brevet rank of Major. Commanded the Troops in the Sovereignty during the Kaffir
war of 1851-53 ; crossed the Orange River in Feb. 1851 (effecting the passage with guns, wagons, &c, in a temporary
boat constructed on the occasion) to assist in the protection of the Albert district, and on the 2Sth March following,
with one Troop Capt M. Rifles, one six-pounder, and a small Burgher Force, defeated a large body of Tambookies
and Basutos, under the chiefs Moocrose, Umhal, and Spepere, leaving upwards of 300 of the enemy dead on the field.
33 Colonel J. D. Downing served with the 1st Battalion 12th Regiment throughout the New Zealand war of
1863-65, including the Waikato campaign (Medal).
3i Colonel M. R. Eden landed with the 56th Regimeut in the Crimea on the 25th August 1855, served at the siege
of Sebastopol, and was present at the final assault (Medal -with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
37 Colonel P. P. Faddy commanded the Royal Artillery in the engagement at Port Natal against the revolted Zulu
Chief Foro in 1846. He served in the Kaffir war of 1852 in command of .the Royal Artillery, and was named in the
official despatches, especially in that relating to the capture of the Kaffir Chief Macomo's stronghold, called
" Macomo's Den,"' on the 10th March. Also commanded the Royal Artillery at the battle of Berea against the Basuta
Tribes under the Chief Moshesh (horse shot) 20th Dec. 1852, and was again mentioned in despatches, and received
J3i£ Brevet rank of Major for his services (Medal). Commanded as Brigadier the Column detached from the Saugor
FieldForce, which defeated the rebel force at Keutee in Bundelcund on4th March 1S59 (mentionedin despatches, Medal) .
38 Sir William Fairfax served with the 31st Regiment in the Crimea from 22nd May 1S55, and was present at the
siege and fall of Sebastopol, and attacks of the 18th June and 8th Sept. (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
40 Colonel W. Faussett served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the 44th Regiment, including the battles of
Alma and lnkerman, siege and fall of Sebastopol, and attack and occupation of the cemetery on the 18th June ; he
was Brigade Major in the 3rd Division from 23rd April 1855 (Medal with three Clasps, Brevet of Major, Sardinian
and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
42 Colonel Hon. H. T. Fraser served with the 1st Battalion Scots Guards in the Egyptian war of 1882, and was
present at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (Medal with Clasp, 4th Class of the Osmanieh. and Khedive's Star).
43 Colonel H. E. Glass served with the 37th Regiment in India during the mutiny of 1857-58, and was engaged
in the attack on the rebel position near Benares at Atrowlea and Koelsa, defence of Azimghur and sortie thence ;
proceeded with Brigadier Douglas' Column in pursuit of Koer Singh, and present in the actions of 17th and 20th
April ; also with Colonel Turner's Column in Shahabad and Palamon, including the capture of Jugdespore and
actions of 17th 18th and 20th October (Medal).
44 Colonel Hamilton -Grace served with the 68th Light Infantry inthe Crimea from 1st June 1855, and was pre-
sent at. the siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, Sardinian and Turkish Medals). Served also in the New
Zealand war in 1864-66, including the attack on the Gate Pah, and in the West Coast campaign, and present at Kaka-
ramea (Medal).
40 Colonel Gregory served in the American war in 1814 and 15, and commanded a gunboat belonging to the Flo-
tilla under Commander Owen on Lake Ontario, for which he received the thanks of the Naval Commander in Cliief.
47 Colonel E. St. J. Griffiths served in the Hazara campaign in 1868, including the expedition against the
tribes on the Black Mountain (Medal with Clasp).
53 Colonel Leith Hay served in Canada during the rebellion, and was in the affair at Prescott. Served the Eastern
campaign of 1854 up to 8th February 1S55 and again from 13th August 1855, including the battles of Alma and
Balaklava, siege and fall of Sebastopol, and commanded the 93rd Highlanders at the assault on the 8th September
(Medal with three Clasps, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Com-
manded the 93rd Highlanders at the relief of Lucknow 14th to 25th November 1857, defeat of the Gwalior Contin-
gent at Cawnpore on 6th December and pursuit to Seraighat, siege and capture of Lucknow j commanded the
Highland Brigade at the battle of Bareilly, and served in the Oude campaign in 1858-59, including the actions of
Purgaon and Russoulpore. and evacuation of the Fort of Mittoula (Brevet of Colonel, Medal with Clasp, and CB.).
54 Colonel F. G. Hibbert served with the 91st Regiment, in the Kaffir war of 1851-53, and was wounded in action
at Waierkloof on 8thMarch 1852 (Medal).
58 Colonel Lowe served with the 16th Lancers at the siege of Bhurtpore in 1S25-26, and was wounded (Medal).
60 Colonel J. M'Doitnell served throughout the Kaffir war of 1846-47 (Medal), during which he commanded seve-
ral successful skirmishing parties. Led the successful attack under Sir George Berkeley against a large body of
Kaffirs posted in one of their strongest positions at the Sohoto Mountain, where they treacherously murdered
Major Baker and four other officers two days previously. Was present in the action with and defeat of the insur-
gent Jioers at Boem Plaats 29th Aug. 1848, and on Major Armstrong being severely wounded he commanded the
Cape Mounted Riflemen during the latter part of the engagement.
65 Sir Francis Edmund Macnaghten. — For War Services, see Militia (Irish Rifles).
66 Sir Charles Mansfield served as Aide de Camp to Sir Colin Campbell throughout the Eastern campaign of
2854-55, including the battles of Alma and Balaklava, siege and fall of Sebastopol (mentioned in despatches, Medal
with three Clasps, Sardinian and Turkish Medals). Served in the Indian Mutiny campaign as Aide de Camp to Sir
William Mansfield, and was present inthe actions of the 25th 27th and 28th Nov. under General Windham in the
vicinity of Cawnpore, and at the battle thereof on the 6th Dec. 1857, at which he was severely wounded (mentioned
in despatches, Brevet of Major, and Medal).

68 Colonel F.C.Maude. — For War services, see Military Knights of Windsor, p. .774.
69 Colonel J. Miller volunteered and commanded the combined force (English and Danish) during the insurrection
at Tortola, W.I., in August 1853. On his arrival martial law was proclaimed, and enforced for a period of six
weeks, the natives, amounting" to 7,000, having completely destroyed the town, and threatened the lives of the
Suropean inhabitants, who fled for refuge to St. Thomas. He suppressed the rebellion, and restored the island to a
