59§« War Services of the Officers on the Unemployed Supernumerary List.
Sir I*cville Chamberlain served throughout the Affghan campaigns of 1839-42, daring which he was attached
to Christie's Corps of Irregular Cavalry, and was wounded on six different occasions and has received the Medal
for Ghuznee, and also the Medal inscribed " Candahar, Ghuznee, and Cabul 1842." Was present with the Governoi
General's Body Guard at the battle of Maharajpore 29th Dec. 1843 (Bronze Star). Served in the Punjaub campaign
of 1848-41), including the actions of Chillianwallali and Goojerat (Medal with two Clasps). Commanded the Force on
the N. W. Frontier of India in various expeditions against the hostile Hill Tribes, and with signal success (Medal
with Clasp, ECB. and SCSI.) .
3 General U. R. Younghusband served with the Field Force in Sind and Affghanistan in 1841-42; present
with the Light Battalion in the advance on Kandahar; and in 1843, as Major of Brigade to the force, was present
at the battles of Meeanee and Hyderabad (Medal) . Served as Deputy Adjutant General tothe Persian Expeditionary
Force m 1856-57, and was present at the landing at Hallilah Bay, at the storm and capture of Reshire, the sur-
render of Bushire, and during the forced march on Borazjoon, the occupation of the enemy's entrenched camp, and
the night attack and batttaof Khooshab (Medal with Clasp, and CB.) .
I Sir Charles Reid served in Upper Sind under Sir Charles Napier in i843;andwiththeSirmoorBattalion(Goorkhas)
throughout the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46, including the action of Aliwal and battle of Sobraon — brought the
Battalion out of action (horse twice wounded, specially mentioned in Sir Walter Gilbert's despatch, Medal and
Clasp). Served in the Burmese war in 1852-53 (Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp for Pegu). Commanded the
Sirmoor Battalion throughout the Indian Mutiny in 1857; opened the communication between Meerutand Calcutta,
for which he received the thanks of Government; was present at the battle of Budlee-ke-Serai and throughout
the siege ol Delhi, and commanded all theadvanced posts on the right of the Delhi Ridge, including Hindoo Rao's
house (l.be key of the position) from the 8th June to the 14th September, during which period twenty-six separate
attacks upon those positions were repulsed. Commanded a Column on the 17th June for the attack on Kissen-
gunge, commanded the 4th Column of assault on Delhi on the 14th September— severely wounded (Brevet of
Lt. Colonel, CB., and Medal with Clasp). Served also in the Oude campaign in 1858-59 (Aide de Camp to the
Queen and Colonel, thanked by Parliament, and on four separate occasions by the Government of India). Is in
receipt ol' the Good Service and the Wound pensions, and in 1871 was nominated a, KCB. for his distinguished
military services. Nominated GCB. in 1886.
s General G. P. Whish served the campaign of 1842 in Affghanistan under General Pollock (Medal). Also in
tho Punjaub campaign of 1848-49 as an Assistant Adjutant General, and was present at the battle of Goojerat
(Medal with Clasp, and Brevet of Major).
7 Sir Edward Lechmero Russell served with the field force in Sind and Affghanistan in 1842-43 and was present
in all the operations including the expedition to and destruction of Imaumghur, and as Adjutant of the Sind
Irregular Horse in the battles of Meeanee and Hyderabad, and surrender of Omerkote (Medal).
• General H. W, Blake served during the insurrection in Canara in 1837. Also the rebellion in the Golcon-
dah Zciniiidnr.v in 1848.
10 Sir Crawford Chamberlain served throughout the campaigns in Affghanistan of 1839-42, including the
siege and capture of Ghuznee (Medal), and various actions near Candahar (Medal). Punjaub campaign of 1848-49,
including the battles of Chillianwallah and Goojerat, pursuit of the Sikh Army and its final surrender at Rawul
Pindee, and was wounded in a skirmish with Sikh Cavalry (mentioned in despatches, Medal with two Clasps, and
Brevet of Major). Served in the campaign on the North-West Frontier in 1853-55 (Medal). Served at Mooltan
during tho mutiny in 1857, disarmed the 62nd and 69th Bengal Native Infantry, was engaged against the Googaira
rebels, and was besieged in the Serai of Cheekawutne for four days (Medal, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, and thanks
of Government) .
II General W. F. Nuthall served in 1852-53; drew together three outposts of the Arracan Battalion in the
Aeng Pass with which he surprised and captured the Norigan stockade at the summit of the Pass. Has received
tho thanks of the Governor General on several following occasions : — for services with the Pogu Light Infantry — in
expelling Marauding Bands in the Rangoon district in 1853, in Pegu district in 1853-54, and in Tharawaddy district
in 1854 (Brevet ii Major, Medal with Clasp for Pegu).

10 Sir Henry Norman served as Adjutant of the 31st Bengal Native Infantry throughout the Punjaub cam-
paign of 1S48-49 including the passage of the Chenab, actions at Sadoolapore, Chillianwallah, and Goojerat, and
subsecpient pursuit of the Sikhs and Affghans under Sir Walter Gilbert (Medal with two Clasps). Was Brigade
Major to the Troops engaged m the Kohat Pass in Feb. 1S50 under Sir Charles Napier and Sir Colin Campbell; and,
as Brigade Major or D. A. Adj. General tothe Troops employed, was engaged in various expeditions against the
mountain tribes near Peshuwur in 1850-51-52-53-54 (Medal with Clasp). Served with the 31st N.I. during the
Sauthal insurrection in 1855-56, and for four months was in command of a separate Detachment (thanked by
the Commander in Chief in India for surprising and capturing an insurgent chief). Was engaged throughout the
operations against the mutineers and rebels in India from the first outbreak in May 1S57 until the termination of the
war. As Assistant Adjutant General of the Army was present at the action of Badlee Serai on 8th June 1857 in which
the Adjutant General (Colonel Chester) was killed, and performed the duties of Adjutant General to the Army in the
field from that date, with the exception of some portion of the siege of Delhi, until the end of the war. Served
throughout the siege of Delhi from the 8th June to the 20th Sept. 1857; was present with Greathed's Column at
the actions ofBolundshuhur, AUyghur, and Agra; subsequently in Nov. 1857 in action near Bunterah in Oude with the
Troops under Brigadier Grant. Present with the Commander in Chiet in the skirmishes prior to and throughout the
operations connected with the relief of Lucknow (horse shot at the storming of the Shah Nujeef) ; at the relief of
Cawnpore and subsequent operations from 28th Nov. to 6th Dec. 1857 when the Gwalior Contingent and other
Troops were finally routed and dispersed : at the action near Khodagunge and reoccupation of Futtehghur on 3rd June
1858, at the siege and capture of Lucknow 2nd to 21st March 1858. Rohilcund campaign in May, including the action
of Batcilly (wounded) and affair at Shahjehanpore ; campaign in Oude during the cold season of 1858-59, including
the affairs of Doundeakeira, Bergudia, Musjidea, and the Raptee (Medal with three Clasps, CB., and Brevets of
Major and Lt.Colonel ; was twenty-five times thanked in general orders and despatches for services in the field).

23 General A. R. Maiison served in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, and was present at the siege and sur-
render of Mooltan, and storm and oapture of thetown (Medal with Clasp). Persian campaign of 1856-57, including
tho storm and capture of Reshire, surrender of Bushire, and battle of Kooshah (Medal with Clasp). Commanded
his Regiment at the action with the rebels under Tantin Topee, near Rajghur (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal).
26 Sir John Forbes served with the field force in Sind and Affghanistan in 1841-42, including the advance on
Candahar, and the several operations of the army under General Nottleading to the reoccupation of Ghuznee
and Cabul (Medal). Served with the force under Sir Charles Napier in Sind in 1843, and was present at the
battle of Hyderabad (Medal). Persian campaign of 1856-57, including the assault and capture of Reshire, surrender
of Bushire, at Borazjoon, and battle of Kooshab — severely wounded (received the thanks of the Government
of Ind in. Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp, and CB.). Served with the Central India Field Force from the
siege ol Rutghur tothe tall of Calpee (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal with Clasp). Commanded the rear guard
from Etora to Deopoora when attacked by the rebel army and which he held in check until the baggage was
safely escorted into camp.

29 Sir Hurry Prendergast served with the Madras Sappers and Miners in Persia in 1857, and was present
at the bombardment of Mohumrah (Medal with Clasp). Served as Assistant Field Engineer with the Malwa
Field Force in 1857, and with the Central India Field Force under Sir Hugh Rose in 1858, took part in the sieges
of Dhur, Ritghur, Goratote, and Jhansi, was present at nearly all the battles and minor affairs of the above
