193 War Services of the Officers of the Royal Artillery.
15 General Fuller served in suppression of the Indian Mutiny, and was present at the action of Kotahkeserai
and recapture of Gwalior (Medal with Clasp) .
,e General Gordner served in the Peshawur Mountain Train in various engagements on the Trans-Indus
Frontier from 1854 to 1859 (Medal with Clasp). In the Indian Mutiny (Medal). Commanded Mountain Train
Battery in the Cossyah Hill campaign of 1862-63, and also in the Bhootan campaign of 1864-65 (mentioned in
despatches. Clasp).
18 General F. W. Hastings served in the Crimean campaign from May 1855, including the siege and fall of
Sevastopol, in the Trenches with the siege train, and at the bombardments of 6th and 17th Jane (Brevet of
Major Medal with Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
20 Sir Henry Smyth served in tne Crimean campaign from June 1855, including the siege and fall of Sebasto-
nol (Medal witji Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Conducted the operations which suppressed the rebellion in Zulu-
land in 1888 (CM IV.).
21 Sir William Stirling Hamilton was wounded in six places during a night attack on his Camp by 200 Affree-
dies whilst making a military road to Fort Mackeson and encamped six miles from Peshawur. Out of 60
burkundaz and employes in the camp 15 were killed and 31 wounded. Served before Delhi from the 26th June
to the capture of the city on the 20th Sept. 1857, having organized the 1st Company of Sikh Artillery during the
siege, and constantly commanded Batteries of position (mentioned in despatches, with '• especial approbation
and thanks for zeal, ability, and coolness in situations of great danger" — Medal with Clasp).
22 General Nicholl was thanked by the Governor General and mentioned in Sir Hugh Rose's despatch for services
during the defence of Smtgor in 1858.
83 Sir Robert Biddulph served throughout the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battles of Alma and
Balaklava, siege and fall of Sebastopol, and expedition to Kertch (Medal with three Clasps, Turkish Medal, and 5th
Class of the Medjidie). Served in the Indian campaign of 1857-58, including the action of Kalee Nuddee, siege and
capture of Lucknow (as D.A.Q.M. General of Artillery), action of . Tamo (as Brigade Major to the Field Force), and
affair of Daoodpoore. Served as D.A.Adjutant General of the Oude Force under Sir Hope Grant from OCI.185S,
and was present in the operations in the Byswarra district, passage of the Gogra.and various actions on the
Nepaul frontier, also operations there in 1850 terminating in the forcing of the Jerwah Pass (several times men-
tioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp) . Served as Military Secretary with the expedition to China in i860, and
was present at Sinho, Tangku, capture of Taku Forts, actions near Tangchow, and surrender of Pekin (Brevet of
Major, Medal with two Clasps). Was promoted Brevet Lt.Colonelfor services in India.
24 Lieut. General G. Le M. Tupper served inthe Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battles of Balaklava
and Inkerman (wounded), the siege and fall of Sebastopol, and repulse of the sortie on the 26th October, 1S54
(Medal with three Clasps, Brevet of Major, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
25 Lord Roberts served throughout the Indian Mutiny of 1S57-58 as D.A.Q.M. General of Artillery, including
the siege and capture of Delhi from the 28th June to the 20th September (wounded 14th July, horse shot 14th
September), actions of Bolundshur (horse shot), Allyghur, Agra, Kunoj (horse sabred), and Bundhera where he
narrowly escaped capture while reconnoitring; present in the skirmishes prior to and throughout the operations
connected with the relief of Lucknow by Lord Clyde ; operations at Cawnpore from 28th Nov. to 6th Dec. 1857, and
defeat of the Gwalior Contingent, action ofKhodagunge, reoccupation of Futtehghur, storm of Meangunge, action of
.Koorsee, and the various operations ending with the capture of Lucknow|(thanked by the Governor General .Victoria
Cross, Brevet of Major, -Medal with three Clasps) : received the YC under the following circumstances:— "Lieutenant
Roberts' gallantry has on every occasion been most marked. On following up the retreating enemy on the 2nd
January 1858, at Khodagunge, he saw in the distance two sepoys going away with a standard. Lieutenant Roberts
put spurs to his horse, and oveitook them just as they were about to enter a village. They immediately turned
round and presented their muskets at him, and one of the men pulled the trigger, but fortunately the cap snapped,
and the standard-bearer was cut down by the gallant young Officer, and the standard taken possession of by him. He
also, on the same day, cut down another sepoy who was standing at bay, with musket and bayonst, keeping off a
sowar. Lieutenant Roberts rode to the assistance of the horseman, and rushing at the sepoy, with one blow of his
sword cut him across the face, killing him on the spot." Was employed on special service with the expedition of 1863
against the tribes on the North West Frontier of India, and was present at the storming of Laloo, capture of
TJmbeylah and destruction of Mulkah (Medal with Clasp). Served in the Abyssinian campaign from January 1898,
as Assistant Quarter Master General with the Bengal Brigade, and, as Senior Officer of the Department at Zoula,
superintended the re-embarkation of the whole army ; was selected by Sir Robert Napier as the bearer of his final
despatches (Brevet of Lt.ColoneL and Medal). Served &s Assistant Quarter Master General and Senior Staff
Officer with the Cachar Column, .Looshai Expeditionary Force, in 1871-72, and was present at the capture oi the
Kholel villages, and attack on the Northlang range. Commanded the Troops engaged at the burning of the
village of Taikoom, 26 January 1872 (CB.). Commanded the Koorum Field Force from the commencement of the
Afghan war in 1878, and was present at the storming and capture of thePeiwar Kotal and the pursuit of the Afghan
army totheShutargardan, at the affair intheMaugiorPass and during the operations in Khost (received the thanks
of both Houses of Parliament, and KCB.). Commanded theCabul Field Force during the advance on and occupation
of Cabul in the autumn of 1879, and was present in the engagement at Charasiah. and throughout the operations at
Sherpore during the winter of 1879-80 (CIE.). Commanded the Cabul-Candahar Field Force which marched from
Cabul to Candahar in August 1880, relieved the Candahar Garrison, and on the 1st September defeated and dis-
persed the army under Ayub Khan (received the thanks of both Houses of Parliament, Medal with four Clasps,
and Bronze Decoration). Nominated OC'B. and created a Baronet for his distinguished services in India. Has been
twenty-three times mentioned in despatches before the Afghan war, during which campaign he was eight times
thanked by the Viceroy and Commander in Chief in India. Commanded the forces in Burmah in 1SS6 after the
capture of Mandalay (received the thanks of the Government of India, Clasp).
26 General Bayly served in the Punjab campaign of 1848-49, and was present at the siege and capture cf
Mooltan (Medal with Clasp).
27 Sir Henry Brackenbury served in India in 1857-58, and was present at the action of Banda and capture cf
Kirwee (Medal with Clasp) . In the Franco-German war of 1870-71 was attached by the Government to the service of
the British National Society for Aid to the Sick and Wounded, and was present with the armies till the conclusion
of the Armistice. For his services in this capacity he was appointed Officer of the Legion of Honor by special
deeree of the French Government of National Defence, was made a Knight of the First Class of the Royal Bavarian
Order of St. Michael, and received the Iron Cross from the Emperor of Germany. Accompanied Sir Garnet
Wolseley to the Gold Coast in September 1873 as Assistant Military Secretary, and served throughout the Ashanti
war of 1873-74, including the action of Essamen, relief of Abrakrampa, battle of Amoaful, battle of Ordahsu and
capture of Coomassie (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp). In 1875 was further rewarded
with the Brevet of Lt. Colonel on return from special service with Sir Garnet Wolseley in Natal. Served as Military
Secretary to Sir Garnet Wolseley in the latter part of the Zulu war, and throughout the operations against
Sekukuni in 1879, being present at the storming of the stronghold. Performed the duties of Chief of the Staff in
South Africa from the 29th Sept. 1879 to the 7th Feb. 1880 (mentioned in despatches, CB., Medal with Clasp).
Served in the Soudan campaign in 1885 under Lord Wolseley as Deputy Adjutant and Quarter Master General,
and was present in the engagement at Kirbekan (mentioned in despatches) ; alter the death of Major General
Earle he commanded the Nile Column (mentioned in despatch::, promoted Major General for distinguished
service in the field, Medal with two Clasps, and Khedive's Star).
26 Sir Robert John Hay served as Assistant Adjutant General of Artillery with the expedition to China in 1S60, and
was present at Sinho, Tangku, capture of Taku Forts, actions near Tangchow, and surrender of Pekin (Brevet
of Major, Medal with two Clasps).
29 Sir W. J. Williams served in the Crimean campaign from May 1855, including the siege and fall of Sebas-
topol (wounded), in Trenches with siege train, and at bombardments of 6th and 17th June (Brevet of Major,
Medal with Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served with the Jowaki Afreedee Expedition
in 1877-78 in command of the Artillery (mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp). Served in the Afghan w.ar
in 1878-79, and was present at the attack and capture of Ali Musjid (mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp)g
