1 The Duke of Cambridge commanded the 1st Division of the Eastern Army throughout the campaign of 1854
including the battles of the Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman (horse shot), and siege ofSebastopol (mentioned in
despatches, received the thanks of the House of Commons, Medal with four Clasps, and Turkish Medal).
2 Sir D. C. Drury-Lowe served with the 17th Lancers in the Crimea from 18th June 1855, including the battle
of the Tchernaya, siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Also the Indian campaign
of 1858-59, including pursuit of rebel force under Tantia Topee, and the action of Zeerapore (Medal with Clasp
for Central India) . Commanded the 17th Lancers and the Cavalry of the 2nd Division in the Zulu war of 1879, and
was present in the engagement at TJlundi — wounded (CB., Medal with Clasp). Served in the Boer war of i£8i
under Sir Evelyn Wood in command of the Cavalry Brigade. Served in the Egyptian war of 1882 in command of
the Cavalry Division, and was present at the engagements of El Magfar, Mahsama, the two actions at Kassasin,
and the battle of Tel-el-Kebir, immediately after which he commenced a forced march with the Cavalry by
which he obtained possession of Cairo, the surrender of its citadel, and of the rebel chief Arabi (six times men-
tioned in despatches, received the thanks of both Houses of Parliament, XCB. , Medal with Clasp, 2nd Class of
the Osmanieh, and Khedive's Star).
11 Lt.Colonel Hemw Fortescue served with the 17th Lancers in the Zulu war of 1879 (Medal with Clasp).
13 Major Herbert served with the 17th Lancers in the Zulu war of 1879, and was present in the engagement at
Ulundi (Medal with Clasp) .
17 Lieut. Clarke served m the Zulu war of 1879, and was present in the engagements at Zinguin Mountain and
Ulundi (Medal with Clasp).
