230 Lieut.General G. A. Laughton served with the Persian Expeditionary Force in 1856, and was present at the
assault and capture of Reshire, suriender of Bushire, expedition to Borazjoon.and attack of Khooshab (Medal with
Clasp). Served in the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1857-58 (Medal).
231 Lieut.General R. Mallaby served in the Afghan warm 1S80 in command of a Field Force in the Khak a Sora
Valley and subsequently of the Reseive Brigade (Medal).
232 Lieut.General J. P. Sberiiff served with the 2nd Punjaub Infantry during the Indian Mut'ny campaign in
1857-58, and was present at the siege, assault and capture of Delhi including tue battle of Nujjuffghur. Accom-
panied Greathed's Movable Column and present at the battle of Boolundshuhur : was detached with a portion
of his Regiment at AUyghuv; and subsequently commanded a mixed force in the Etawah District, where he had
several engagements with the enemy ana captured five guns, after driving the enemy from his position — received
the thanks of the Governor General (Medal wiih Clasp, and Brevet of Major). Served with the Looshai Expedition
in 1R71-72 (Medal with Claspl ; with the Duma Expedition in 1874-75 (mentioned in despatches) ; and with the
Naga Hills Expeditions in 1875 and 1879-c'o (mentioued in despatches, Clasp).
233 Sir O. T. Tanner served in the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1857-58 (Medal). Served in the Afghan war of
1878-80, and was present in the engagements at Khnshk-i-Xakhud and Sir-i-Asp ; accompanied Sir Frederick
Roberts in the march to Candahar (mentioned in despatches), and was present at the battle of Candahar (men-
tioned in despatches, Brevctof Colonel, CB , Medal with Cl^.sp, and Bronze Decoration). Served in the Egyptian
war of 1882 in command of an In fantr3' Brigade of the Indian Contingent, ana was present at the battle of Tei-el
Kebir (twice mentioned in despatches, KCB., Medal with Clasp, 2nd Class of the Medjidie, and Khedive's Star).
Commanded the expedition into the Zhob Valley in 1884, and received the expression of the approbation of the
Government of India for his conduct of the operations.
234 Sir Henry Moore served with the Persian Expeditionary Force in 1857m command of Aden Troop (Medal
with Clasp). On landing from Persia proceeded to the Shoolapoor border to watch the country between the rivers
Bheema and Krishna ; joined the field force under Colonel Malcolm; present at the capture of Beder Shoorpoor ;
ordered to join the Cavalry Brigade in Central India; joined Sir John Michel's Force in pursuit of the rebels through
the Putchunny Hills, subsequent] y joined Brigadier Parke's Force by forced marches; pursued the rebels across th&
Xerbudda ; present at the action at Chota Oodeypoor. and in pursuit of the rebels through Central India (Medal).
Served throughout the Abyssinian campaign of 1S67-68 in the Intelligence Department, present at the capture of
Magdala (Brevet of Major, and Medal). Served in the Looshai Campaign of 1871-2 in Command of a Coolie Corps
(mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Lt. Colonel, and Clasp). Served in the Afghan war in 1878-79 as Assistant
Quarter Master General with the Quetta Field Force, and was present in the advance on and occupation of
Candahar and in the engagement at Takht-i-Pul; way Political Officer to the Force in the advance to the
Helmund, including the engagement at Saif-u-deen (CB., and Medal). Served in the Egyptian war cf 1S82 as
Head of the Intelligence Department with the Indian Contingent, and was present at the battle of Tel-el- Kebir
(Medal with Clasp, 3rd Class of the Osmanieh, and Khedive's Star).
235 Lieut.General J. Harpur served in the Afghan war in 1879-80, and took part in the march to Candahar with
the force under Major General Phayre (mentioned in despatches, Medai).
236 Lieut.General J . B. Cox served in the Afghan war of 1878-80 in the Koorum Valley (Medal).
237 Lieut.General 0. L. Smith served in the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1857-59, and* was present at the defence
of the Lucknow Residency, and at the siege of Lucknow (twice severely wounded, received the thanks of the
Government of India, Medal with two Clasps).
239 Lieut.General C. R. Shaw served in the Punjaub campaign in 1848-49 (Medal). Served in the Indian Mutiny
campaign in 1857-58, and was present at the defeat of the Gwalior Contingent and at the siege of Lucknow (Medal
with Clasp).
240 Lieut.General C. J.Smith was employed in the suppression of the mutiny in India in 1857-59, and was present
at the affair at Kanta, at Bunnee with force forming rear guard of Commander in Chief's Army during the capture
of Lucknow, present at Doomeragunge, at the affairs at Bansee on the 22nd and2Sth September 1858, and at the
battle of Toolsepors (Medal with Ciaspj.
241 Lieut.General H.H. Lyster served on the Staff of Sir Hugh Rose as Interpreter and Aide de Camp throughout the
Central India campaign from Dec. 1857 to July 1858, including the siege and capture of the town and fort of Ratb-
ghurand repulse of the rebels in an attack on the camp during the siege, action of Baroda (sabre wound and charger
also wounded), taking of Baroda, forcing the Muddinpore Pass, siege and storm of the town and capture of the
fort of Jhanc' battle of the Betwa, action of Koonch and capture of the town (charger received one bayonet and
two sabre wounds), attack on the camp of the 2nd Brigade at Muttra, attack on the camp of the 1st Brigade at
Goolowlee, taking of the town and fort of Calpee, action at and capture of Morar cantonments, storming of the
Lushker and fort of Gwalior (three times mentioned in despatches, twice for gallant conduct in the field, Brevet of
Major, Victoria Cross, and Medal with Clasp) ; was awarded the 1 T C under the following circumstances :— " Date
of act of bravery, 23rd May 1858. — For gallantly charging and breaking, singly, a skirmishing square of the
retreating rebel army from Calpee, and killing two or three sepoys in the conflict. Major General Sir Hugh Henry
Rose, G-CB., reports that this act of bravery was witnessed by himself and by Lt. Colonel Gall, CB., of the 14th
Light Dragoons." Served in the Afghan war of 1S7S-80, and was present in the engagements at Ahmed Kheyl
(mentioned in despatches) and Urzoo near Ghusnee {CB., Medal with Clasp).
242 Lieut.General G. Wheeler served in the Burmese war in 1852-54 (Medal).
244 Lieut.General D. Shaw served with the held force against the insurgent Moplahs at Munjerry in the district oi
Malabar, and was present at the engagement against the insurgent Moplahs on September 4th 1840, at Kolatoor on
25th August 1851, and commanded a detachment of the Malabar Police Corps employed in the destruction of a party
of insurgent Moplahs near Calicut on the Western coast on the 17th September 1855. Present at the quelling of a,
riot in Tinnevelly 22nd December 1858. Served with the Burmese Expedition in 1S85-86 in command of the Base
at Thayetmyo (mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp) .
245 Lieut.General R. S. Moseley served in China and was present in the engagement of the 8th January 1859.
when the battery and village of Shek-tsing were captured (Medal). Served in the Afghan war in 1880 on the
Khyber Line of Communications (Medal).
247 Lieut.General D. Standen served with the Kamptee Movable Column, and present at Sonaar river, the Imleea,
Neenikhera Bhutgaon and Sleemanabad in 1857 and 1S58 (Medal).
248 Lieut.General A. H. Bamfield served in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including the battles of Chillian-
wallah and Goojerat, and pursuit of the Sikhs and Affghans (Medal with two Clasps). Accompanied the ex
peditionary force against the Boree Afreedees in the Kohat Hills in 1853 (Medal with Clasp). Served in the Indian
Mutiny campaign in 1857 (Medal).
250 Lieut.General B. W. D. Morton served in the Cossyah and Jyntiah campaign in 1863.
251 Lieut.General W. Osborn served in the Burmese war in 1852-53 (Medal).
252 Lieut.General T. T. Turton served with the field force under Major Orr against insurgent Rohillas in the
Nizam's territories in 1855; was present at the attack and capture of a body of Rohillas near Lingi Bonti, by
Lt.Colonel Doria's Field Force.
253 Sir Francis IS'orman served in the Punjaub throughout the Indian mutinies of 1857-58 ; as Assist. Quarter
Master General with Eusofzai Field Force at Umbeyla in 1863 ; present with 2nd Brigade under Colonel W. W.
Turner at storming of Conical Hill and destruction of Lalloo on 15th December and action in Chumra valley on
following day, and with 2nd Brigade under Colonel A. Wilde in subsequent operations; served as Assistant
Quarter Master General throughout the campaigns in Bhootan in 1864-65 and 1865-66; on 14th March 1865 when
reconnoitring in Gooroogaon Pass with a Company of Khelat-i-Ghilzie Regiment and a Company of 20th Punjaub
Native Infantry captured four stockades, inflicting severe loss on the enemy ; received by telegraph thanks 01 His
Excellency SirHugh Rose and was atterwards thanked by Government of India; was present at recapture of De wan-
giri by the force under Brigadier General Tombs on 2nd April 1865; accompanied the force under Colonel W.
Richardson on its advance towards Tongsoo in February 1866 resulting in capture of Suleeka, occupation of the
Iron Suspension Bridge over Monass and restoration by Booteahs of the guns they had captured at Dewangiri in
February 1S65 ; served as 2na in Command 24th Punjaub Native Infantry throughout the Black Mountain expe-
dition under Major General A. Wilde in 1868 ; has been favourably mentioned in despatches of six Officers com-
manding field forces or brigadss; has received thanks of Commanders in Chief; commendation of
