1 Sir George White served with the 27th Regiment on the North-West Frontier during the Indian mutiny
in 1857-59 (Medal). Served with the 92nd Highlanders in the Afghan war in 1879-80, and was present in the
engagement at Charasiah on the 6th October 1879, and in the various operations around Cabul in December 1879,
including the investment of Sherpore ; was also present in the engagement at Charasiah on the 25th April 1S80;
accompanied Sir Frederick Roberts in the march to Candahar, and was present at the reconnaissance of 31st
August and at the battle of Candahar (frequently mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, CB., Victoria
Cross, Medal with three Clasps, and Bronze Decoration) : was awarded the FiE "for conspicuous bravery during
the engagement at Charasiah on the 6th October 1879, when, finding that the artillery and rifle fire failed to
dislodge the enemy from a fortified hill which it was necessary to capture, Major White led an attack upon it in
person. Advancing with two companies of his regiment, and climbing from one steep ledge to another, he came
upon a body of the enemy, strongly posted, and outnumbering his force by about S to 1. His men being much
exhausted, and immediate action being necessary, Major White took a rifle, and, going on by himself , shot the
leader of the enemy. This act so intimidated the rest that they fled round the side of the hill, and the position
was won. Again, on the 1st September i860, at the battle of Candahar, Major White, in leading the finalcharge,
under a heavy fire from the enemy, who held a strong position and were supported by two guns, rode straight up
to within a few yards of them, and, seeing the guns, dashed forward and secured one, immediately after which
the enemy retired." Served with the Nile Expedition in 1884-85, during the latter part of the time as Assistant
Adjutant and Quarter Master General (Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star). Served with the Burmese
Expedition in 1885-89 in command of the 2nd Infantry Brigade and commanded at Mandalay during the
insurrection; commanded the Upper Barmah Field Force after the capture of Mandalay (received the thanks
of the Government and of the Commander in Chief in India, promoted Major General for distinguished service
in the field, frequently mentioned in despatches, KCB., and Medal with Clasp). Commanded the Zhob Field
Force in 1S90 (received the thanks of the Government and Comm'inder in Chief in India).
2 Colonel Mathias served in the Nile Expedition in 1884-85 with the 1st Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders
(Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star). Served with the Chitral Relief Force under Sir Robert Low in 1895 Bn'
command of the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders, including the storming of the Malakand Pass (mentioned
in 'despatches, CB., and Medal with Clasp;. Served in the campaign on the North West Frontier of India under
Sir William Lockhart in 1897-98 in command of the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders throughout the campaign
and of tbe Jamrud Column trom 8th September to Sth October 1897, and was present in the engagement at Dargai
on the 18th October (mentioned in despatches) ; led the final successful assault of the Dargai Heights on the 20th
October — slightly wounded (rnention-d in despatches), and was present at tbe capture of the Sainpag*ia and
Arhanga Passes, and tbe subsequent operations in the Maidan, Waran, and Bara Valleys (menti'ined in des-
patches. Aide de Camp to the Queen and Brevet Colonel for distinguished service in the field, two ClispO-
3 Lt. Colonel DickCunyngham served in the Afghan war of 1878-80, and was present on Transport duty in the
advance to Candahar and Khelat-i-Ghilzie under Sir Donald Stewart; with the Tlmll Chotiali Fo> ce under Major
General Biddulph (mentioned in despatches) ; under Sir Frederick Roberts iu the Koorum Valley Field Force in
the 92nd Gordon Highlanders, including the engagement at Aii Kheyl; took part in the operations round Cabul
in December 1879 (mentioned in despatches) including the attack on the Sherpore Pass (Victoria Cross) ; with the
Maidan Expedition in 1880 as Acting Adjutant of a wing of the 92nd Gordon Highlanders including the engage-
ment at Charasiah on 25th April (mentioned in despatches) ; accompanied Sir Frederick Roberts in the march to
Caudahar, and was present at the reconnaissance of the 31st August and at the battle of Candahar (mentioned in

and coolness displayed by him on the 13th December iSra, at the attack on the Sherpur Pass, in Afghanistan, 111

4 Major Kevill-Davies served in the Egyptian war of 1882 with the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders, and was
present at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir( Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star) ; also served in the Soudan Expedition
in 1S84 with the ist Battalion Gordon Highlanders, and was present in the engagements at El Teb and Temai (4th
Class of the Medjidie, two Clasps). Served in the Nile Expedition in 188,-85 with the ist Battalion Gordon High-
landers and with the River Column under Major Gene\il Earle (Clasp).
5 Lt.Colonel Downman served in the expedition to the Soudan in 1884 with the ist Battalion of the Gordon High-
landers, and was present in the engagements at El Teb and Temai (Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star).
Served in the Nile Expedition in 18S4-85 with the ist Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders and with the River
