787 Civil Decorations for Gallantry. — Details of the Awards.
i* Colonel D. L. Brett was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving two persons from
drowning at New Quay, Cornwall, on the 14th August 1867.
lr ' Captain Brodie was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 2nd November
1882, rescued Lieut. W. S. Kays, of the 60th Rifles, who had lost his horse while'endeavouring to cross a lake near
Ferozepore, and had become entangled in the weeds while weighed down with 150 rounds of cartridge.
17 Captain S. D. Browne was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a native
woman from drowning at Nynee Tal, India, on the 31st August 1885.
18 Captain A. L. H. Buchanan was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a woman
from drowning in the river Liffey at, Dublin, on the 17th April 1893.
19 Colonel J. W. S. Butler was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for his efforts to rescue-
two children who had fallen into a well at Secunderabad, India, on the 215th February 1590. Colonel Butler suc-
ceeded in bringing out one, the othsr being got out by someone else ; unfortunately both children were dead.
21 Surgeon Captain R.Caldwell was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having-
assisted in saving a private of the Black Watch from drowning in the Nile, at Korta, on the 28th October 1S85.
22 Major General Cameron was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 5th
May 1871, swum to the middle of the canal at Ottawa, Canada, righted a canoe which had been upset, and assisted
its occupant back into it.
23 Captain Campbell was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a native from
drowning, 300 yards from the shore, at New Calabar, West Coast of Africa, on the 15th July 1894.
21 Lieut. Channer was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a gentleman from
drowning off Eastbourne on the 18th August 1894. Lieut. Chauner at the time was a Gentleman Cadet at the
Royal Military College, Sandhurst.
26 Colonel Chatfield was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 31st October
1887 jumped into the Irrawaddy to the help of a corporal who had fallen overboard and was afterwards drowned.
Colonel ChatSeld's right hand was disabled and bandaged at the time and he incurred great risk from the force of
the current.
27 Lieut. Clark was awarded the Bronze Modal of the Royal Humane Society for saving from drowning-
a native woman who had fallen into a well 37 feet deep, with nine feet of water, at Secunderabad, in the Deccan,
on the 13th April 1891.
28 Colonel Clementi was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for jumping into the water
with all his clothes on and. with the assistance of Captain W. S. A. Lockhart, rescuing two women who had been
upset from a boat on the Morar Lake, Gwalior, on the 26th December 1869.
29 Surgeon Capt-un Cockeriil was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for assisting to-
save three ladies from drowning at Pentire, n"> ar Newquay, Cornwall, on the 13th August 1878.
30 Major Coles was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having saved from drowning
a lad who had fallen into the River Lea en the 3rd June 1895.
31 Captain Couchman was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Roval Humane Society for saving a man from
drowning who had fallen into a nool of great depth at MongLem, China, on the nth March 1897.
32 Major Creed was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for havin/i, on the -th February
1879, rescued a private of the 17th Regiment who had been swept off his legs while fording the River Cabul ar.
Basanal, by plunging in and keeping his head above water till assistance was brought.
33 Captain Cropper has been awarded the'Albert Medal of the and class and the Bronze Medal cf the Royal
Humane Society tor attempting to save a man by jumping overboard from the s.s. Idaho on the bar off San:
Francisco on the 6th August 1878.
34 Major Cueack was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 22nd May 1881,
jumped overboard and supported till assistance came a man who fell between the troop ship and H.M.S. Dather in
Guernsey Roads. Has also been awarded the Silver Clasp for attempting to save a private soldier from drowning
in a well near Delhi on the 16th January 1886.
35 Captain Dauncey was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, in the overflow of the-
Nile, at the Pyramids of Gizeh, near Cairo, on the 1 ith October 1882, swum out in full uniform (boots and spurs) to-
the assistance of two soldiers of the 7th Dragoon Guards. He gained the shore with one of them, and swam on
again for the other, who, however, sank before he could reach him, and was drowned.
36 Major de Hoghton was awarded the Silver Medal and the Stanhope Gold Medal of the R,oyal Humane Society
for the following act : — On the 10th September 1874, at half-past 9 p.m., at Lowestoft, James Dorling fell overboard
from the Yacht Dart whilst she was making for the inner harbour in a strong half- flood tideway, the night very-
dark, blowing and raining hard, and going about live and a half knots. Lieut. J. de Hoghton, 10th Foot, jumped
overboard, swam to Dorling, and supported him in the water for about a quarter of an honr in the tideway between
narrow high pilework, without crossbeams or side chains to lay hold of, and the head of the pilework twelve or
fifteen feet above the water — the yacht being carried away into the inner harbour and no other vessel or boat in
the gateway to lend assistance ; the darkness prevented any immediate help being obtained from the shore. The-
length of the gateway about 350 yards, width 15 to 20 yards, depth 10 to 15 feet. Lieut, de Hoghton and Dorling-
were ultimately drawn up the pilework by ropes from the shore.
37 Cavtain Scrase-Dickins was granted the decoration of the Albert Medal of the 2nd Class for the following
service : — " While the s.s. Peshawur was passing through the Red Sea on the 27th April 1893, a Lascar, who was at
work in one of the boats, fell overboard. Captain Scrase-Dickins, who had been invalided home, and was lying
half asleep in a chair on deck, immediately jumped overboard, and, swimming to the Lascar, succeeded in keeping
bim afloat until they were both picked up by the ship's boat a mile and a half away from the v essel. The
Peshawur was going at the time at the rate of n£ knots with a strong head wind, aud the sea was moderately
high, and known to be infested with sharks.'' Captain Scrase-Dickins was awarded the SilverMedal of the RcyaT
Humane Society for the same service, and subsequently the Stauhooe Gold Medal for 1893.
38 Captain Drake was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having saved a boy from
drowning at Southsea on the 12th August 1892.
39 Major Duberly was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 25th May i88i„
gone into the water with all his clothes on, and, after two unsuccessful efforts, succeeded in rescuing a lady who
had been sucked under the water between Newnham and Bedford Lock.
40 Colonel Dundas was awarded the SilverMedal of the Royal Humane Society in February 1865 for saving-
the lives of two Marines at Gibraltar.
41 Major Eccles was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, at midnight on the-
26th May 1879, and when just aroused from sleep, jumped from a steamer into the Irrawaddy River, off Proine,
and supported a man who had fallen overboard till assistance arrived.
42 Lt.Oolonel Elliott was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for rescuing a child from
drowning at Torquav on the 1st July 1889.
43 Lt.Colonel A. E. England was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving, at great
personal risk, a lady, who, while hunting with the Heythrop hounds, was in danger of losing her life in consequence
of her horse shying and falling backwards into the canal at Somerton. Oxfordshire, on the 1st December 1886.
44 Major Eyre was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 15th April 1877,
jumped into the river at Bhaugulpore with all his clothes' on and rescued a gentleman who had been clasped by a
man while attempting to swim across the stream.
43 Lieut. H. D. Farquharson was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society Tor saving the secre-
tary to Sir George Tryon from drowning on the occasion of the sinking of H.M.S. Victoria on the 22nd June 1893.
46 Lieut. Feilden was awarded the Silver Medal of the Boyal Humane Society for having rescued two ladies-
from drowning, 100 yards from the shore in a rough sea, at Hayburn Wyke. Yorkshire, on the 23rd July 1895.
48 Captain H. C. Fraser was awarded the Bronze Medal of' the Royal Humane Society for saving a boy from
drowning who had fallen into the Basingstoke Canal at Dogmersfield, Hampshire, on the 1st June 1890.
49 Captain French was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having plunged into the
sea off the West Coast of Africa and rescued a seaman who had fallen overboard from H.M.S. Barrosu, on the
13th. November 189^.
