.Bithoor, and AlumbagU, also the defence of the Ahmibagh (thanked by the President of the Council of India) . Served
with the 75th Regiment before Lucknow under GeneralOutram in two attacks upon his position (Medal with Clasp).
196 Deputy Inspector General U. W. Evans served as a volunteer (his Regiment, the 16th Lancers, being at home
from the commencement of the war in Russia until promoted in December 1854, including the battles of Alma,
Balaklava, and Inkerman, and in the Trenches before'Sebastopol (Medal with four Clasps, an 1 Turkish Medal).
197 Deputy Inspector General G. T. Galbraith served with the 99th Regiment in the New Zealand war (Medal),
and was present at Ohaeawi and Ruapekapeka. He was the Senior Medical Officer present during the greater
part of the operations in the southern district of New Zealand ; at several skirmishes in the Valley of the Hutt ;
.also at the Horokiwi on the 6th Aug. 1846. Served with the expeditionary force in the Nortu. of China in i860 (Medal).
^ 19s Deputy Inspector General .Tee served in the Persian warin 1857, including the night attack and battle of
Kooshab, and bombardment of Mohumrah (Medal with Clasp). Served with Havelock's Column in the several
actions leading to and ending in the relief of the Residency of Lucknow and subsequent defence ; with Outram's
force at Alumbagh, including the repulse of the numerous attacks, and operations ending in the final capture
of Lucknow: present with Brigadier Campbell's Column in the affairs of 20th and 21st March: also the Rohilcund
campaign in 1858 and capture of Bareiily( Medal with Two Clasps, CB., Victoria Cross, and a year's service for Luck-
now; : was awarded the l T tE" for most conspicuous gallantry and important services, on the entry of the late Major
General Havelock's relieving force into Lucknow on the 25th September 1857, in having during action (when the
78th Highlanders, then in possession of the Char Bagh, caotured two 9-pounders at the point of the bayonet), by
great exertion and devoted exposure, attended to tus large number of men woundel iu tbe charge, whom he
succeeded in getting removed on cots and on the backs of their comrades, until he had collected the dooly bearers
who had fie 1. Subsequently, on the same day, in endeavouring to reach the Residency with the wounded men,
Surgeon Jee becime besieged by an overwhelming force in the Mote-Mehal, where he remained during the whole
-light and following morning, voluntarily and repeatedly exposing himself to a heavy fire in proceeding to dress
the wounded men who fell while serving a 24-pounder in a most exposed situation. He eventually succeeded in
taking many of the wounded, through a cross fire of ordnance and musketry, safely into the Residency, by the
river-bank, although repeatedly warned not to make the perilous attempt."
