■of the Rohileund Auxiliary Levy with Brigadier Dennis' Column during pursuit in the Khyreeghur Jungles, and
in two actions fought in Jan. 1859 (mentioned in despatches). Served with the Levy in active pursuit up to Nepaul,
and in subsequent operations undertaken in clearing the district from rebels and marauders up to the end of the
disturbances (thanked by Government of India). Has received the gracious approbation of Her Majesty for

394 Colonel T. Cadell served with the 2nd Bengal European Fusiliers throughout the operations before Delhiin
1857, and was present at the battle of Budleekeserai, the final assault and capture of the city, and the subsequent
■operations with the Movable Column under Brigadier Showers (Medal with Clasp, and Victoria Cross) : received
the "B& "for having, on the 12th June 1857, at the Flagstaff Piquet at Delhi, when the whole of the piquet of Her
Majesty's 75th Regiment and 2nd European Bengaf Fusihers were driven in by a large body of the enemy,
brought in from amongst the enemy a wounded Bugler of his own regiment, under a most severe fire, who would
•otherwise have been cut up by the rebels. Also, on the same day, when the Fusiliers were retiring, by order, on
Metcalfe's house, on its being reported that there was a wounded man left behind, Lieutenant Cadell went back
of his own accord towards the enemy, accompanied by three men, and brought in a man of the 75th Regiment,
who was severely wounded, under a most heavy fire from the advancing enemy." Served in the 4th Irregular
Cavalry with Brigadier Troup's Column in the Oude campaign of 1858-59 ; present at the action of Mehudi under
Colonel Brind, in which thirteen of the enemy's guns were captured ; also with Colonel Turner's Column in

395 Colonel H. \V. Gordon served during the Sonthal rebellion in 1855-56. Served in the China war in i860,
and was present at the action of Sinho, at the capture of the Taku Forts, and the occupation of Pekin (Medal with
•two Clasps). Served in the campaign on the North-West Frontier of India in 1863, and was present at ibe capture
of Umbeyla (Medal with Clasp) ; in the Hazara campaign in 1868 (Clasp) ; and with the Jowaki Afreedee Expedi-
tion in 1877-78 (Clasp). Served with the 20th Bengal Native Infantry in the Afghan war of 1878-80, and was
present at the attack and capture of Ali Musjid, in the advance to Gundamuck, in the operations in the Koorum
