War Services of the Officers on the Unemployed Supernumerary List. 598Z
278 Major General P. Wheeler served in the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1857-59, and was present at the capture
of Bareilly (Medal).
279 Major General H. H. Stansfeld served with the 10th Foot throughout the Indian Mutiny, and was present at
the siesre of Lucknow and several skirmishes in Oude, Azimghur, and the Jugdespore Jungles (Medal with Clasp).
280 Major General T. M. Shelley was present at the outbreak of the mutiny at Meerut on the 10th May 1857. He
«erved afterwards in several actions from the nth August to the 29th September before Delhi, and at the assault
and capture of the city— wounded (Medal with Clasp).
281 Major General M. G. Clerk served in the Indian Mutiny campaigns in 1857-59, and was present with Have-
lock's Force at the actions of Mungarwar and Alumbagh, remaining in the Alumbagh with the force under
Lt.Colonel M'Intyre, and acted as Assistant Field Engineer; afterwards present at the capture of Lucknow
(Medal with two Clasps, and a year's service).
2,2 Major General P. C. Dalmahoy served in the Indian Mutiny campaigns of 1857-59, and was present at the
siege and capture of Delhi, including most of the engagements before its walls previous to the capture. Served
with Brigadier Showers' Force in the Delhi district. Present with the Humeerpore Police Battalion in several
encounters with the rebels in Bundlecund in 1859-60, and on many occasions during the campaign commanded an
independent Column of Military Police (received the thanks of Government for services in Delhi and Bundlecund,
Medal with Clasp).
283 Major General T. R. Nimmo served in the Afghan war of 1878-80, and took part in the defence of Candahar
(mentioned in despatches) including the sortie of Den Khojah— severely wounded (mentioned in;despatches, Medal).
284 Major General W. Gordon served in Burmah against the rebel Mong Gong Gee in 1854. Had charge of the
intrenchments at Allahabad, and command of outposts during the mutinies in 1857 (Medal). Accompanied the
Expeditionary Force to China, and was present at the capture of the Taku Forts and the surrender of Pekin
(Medal with two Clasps).
285 Major General H. C. Menzies was employed in suppressing the insurrection in the Pariah Kimedy district in
1856-57-
286 Major General H. V. Mathias served throughout the Sonthal campaign of 1855-56. Was 2nd in Command of
the Rewah and Nagode Rajah's Troops at the opening of the Deccan road in 1857-58, during which operations
the forts of Kunchunpore Joorah, Myhere city and fort, Jokye, Kunnwarrah, Bejeeragooghur, and 42 pieces of
ordnance were taken (slightly wounded). Was 2nd in Command of the Rewah Contingent at the storming of
the enemy's position on the Punwarrah Heights, taking all the enemy's guns, killing their leaders, and entirely
dispersing their force (Medal with Clasp) .
287 Major General J. W. Orr served in Burmah 1852-53 (Medal with Clasp for Pegu). Also with Major General
Whitlock's Force in suppression of the mutiny in Bengal in 1 858-59, and was present at the surrender of the rebel
Narrain Rao at Kirwee ; was left in charge of the camp on the 16th December 1858, when the force under
Brigadier MacDuff moved out to attack the rebels at Girwassah (Medal with Clasp).
288 Major General Melmoth A. Douglas Orchard served during the Indian Mutiny of 1857-58, and was present
in the actions of the 5th July and 10th October 1857 at Agra (Medal).
289 Major General F. Gadsden served in Arracan during the Burmese war of 1832. Served in the Sumbulpoor
districts during the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1857-58.
290 Major General F. E. A. Chamier served as Aide de Camp to General Outram with Havelock's Force, and
was present at the acticms of Mungarwar and Alumbagh, relief of Lucknow, and subsequent defence of the
Residency until the relief of its Garrison by Lord Clyde ; also present at the final capture of Lucknow (men-
tioned in despatches, Medal with two Clasps, Brevet of Major, and a year's service).
291 Major General C. W. R. Chester served in the campaign on the North-West Frontier of India in 1863, and
was present at the capture of Umbeyla (mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp).
292 Major General H. H. C. G. Warrington was employed on field service in the Saugor and Nerbudda Territories
in the suppression of the Indian Mutiny from the 6th February 1858 (Medal).
293 Major General F. G. Ri leout was employed in suppressing the Khond outbreak in Boad in May and June
1862. Served with the Burmese Expedition in 1885 (Medal with Clasp).
293 t Major General G. A. Prendergast commanded a Squadi-on Mooltanee Cavalry detached from Shahjehanpore
to the assistance of the Rajah of Powayne and commanded at Powayne during the attack on that place by the
rebels under Khan Bahadoor Khan and Feroze Shah on the 7th and 8th Oct. 1858. Served as Orderly Officer to
Brigadier Troup during the campaign in Oude in 1858-59, and was present in the actions of Pusgaon and Russool-
pore, and attack and capture of Fort Mittowlie (Medal). Served in the Afghan war in 1879 iu command of the
Thull Chotal and Vitakri Field Force (Medal).
291 Major General R. A. C. Hunt served with his regiment against the Taepings near Shanghai, and was present
at the storming and capture of the entrenched camp at \Vang-kaza4th April 1862, of the town of Tseerpoo 17th April,
at Nazean 27th and 29th April, at the storming of Kahding 1st May, of Tsing-poo 12th May, and at the storming
and recapture of Kahding on the 4th October 1862 (Medal). Served in the Afghan war in 1879-80, and commanded
the 5th Bombay Native Infantry in the march to Candahar with the force under Major General Phayre (Medal).
20:1 Major Generai C. S. Sturt served in the Abyssinian war in 1867-08 (mentioned in despatches, Medal).
296 Major General H. G.Thomson was on field service with a detachment of the 35th Foot against HillKareens near
Shuay-gheen from 10th April to 1st May 1856, and was rjresent at the action at Palipoon.
297 Major General R. D. Campbell served throughout the Sonthal campaign of 1855-56. Served throughout the
Indian mutiny campaign, against the mutineers near Benareslon the 6th July 1857 (charger severely wounded),
also at Azimghur, andwith the Nepaulese Contingent in the Goruekpore district (Medal). Served also throughout
the Bhootan campaign of 1864-65, and was present at the storming and capture of Dalimkcte, and of Bala and
Nagoh stockades (Medal with Clasp). Served in the Afghan war in 1879-80 with the Khyber Line Force (Medal).
Also served with the Mahsood Wuzeeree Expedition in 1S81.
298 Major General K. R. Elliot was employed on field service in the Raichore Doab from 4th June to 5th August
1858. Served in the Abyssinian war of 1867-68, and was present at the capture of Magdala (Medal).
299 Major General A. T. Moore served with the Persian Expeditionary Force in 1856-57, and was present at the
assault and capture of Reshire, surrender of Bushire, at Borazjoon, and at the action of Khooshab — horse killed
(Victoria Cross, and Medal with Clasp) : received the 1T(£ under the following circumstances : — " On the occasion
of an attack on the enemy on the 8th February 1857, led by Lieutenant Colonel Forbes, CB., Lieutenant Moore, the
Adjutant of the regiment, was, perhaps, the first of all by a horse's length. His horse leaped into the square,
and instantly fell dead, crushing down his rider, and breaking his sword as he fell amid the broken ranks of the
enemy. Lieutenant Moore speedily extricated himself, and attempted with his broken sword to force his way
through the press ; but he would assuredly have lost his life had not the gallant young Lieutenant Malcolmson,
observing his peril, fought his way to his dismounted comrade through a crowd of enemies to his rescue, and, giving
him his stirrup, safely carried him through everything out of the throng. The thoughtfulness for others, cool
determination, devoted courage and ready activity shown in extreme danger by this young Officer, Lieutenant
Malcolmson, appear to have been most admirable, and to be worthy of the highest honour." Served with the
Central India Field Force from the siege of Ratghur (mentioned by Sir Hugh Rose for zeal in serving'a gun when
the camp was suddenly attacked) to the taking of Gwalior, and pursuit and defeat of the rebels by Sir Robert
Napier; served against the rebels in the Jhansi and Jaloun districts during the monsoon of 1858; commanded a
troop of 3rd Cavalry which pursued and charged the rebels at Mow and Mahoni, capturing their two guns (Medal
with Clasp).
300 Major General R. M. Chambers served with his regiment against the Taepings near Shanghai, and was
present at the storming and capture of the entrenched camp at Wang-kaza 4th April 1862, and of the town of
Tseerpoo 17th April, at Nazean 27th and 29th April 1862, at the storming of the town of Tsingpoo 12th May, and
with the garrison defending Kahding in May 1862 (Medal). Served in the Afghan war in 18S0 (Medal).
301 Major General L . E. Evans served throughout the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1858-59 with the 3rd Bengal
European Regiment, and was present with the Mynpooree Movable Column in the operations at Sheraghur Ghat
and with the Agra Column towards Gwalior. Served also with the Column under Brigadier Showers in the action
'if Dewsa against Tantia Topee (Medal).
