228 Lieut.General P. H. F. Harris served with the China Expeditionary Force in 1858-59, and was present in

and was present in the engagement at Ali Kheyl (mentioned in despatches, Medal). Served with the Burmese
Expedition in 1885-86, and was present at the attack on the Minhla Redoubt and commanded the Garrison at

229 Lieut.General H. Melvill served in the Kumaon Militia during 1857 and commanded Cavalry in an attack
made from Nynee Tal upon a portion of the Rohilcund rebels. Served with the Oude Police Cavalry from May
■till September 1858 ; was in command of a Police Force (Cavalry and Infantry) at Mahon near Lucknow when an
attack was made on that post by the enemy on the evening of the 7th August 1858. Commanded the Cavalry in
an attack made by a Police Force upon the fort and position of Birwa on 26th August 1858 (Medal).
230 Lieut.General G. A. Laughton served with the Persian Expeditionary Force in 1856, and was present at the
assault and capture of Reshire, suriender of Bushire, expedition to Borazjoon, and attack of Khooshab (Medal with

231 Lieut.General R. Mallaby served in the Afghan war in 1880 in command of a Field Force in the Khak a Sora

232 Lieut.General J. P. Sheriiff served with the 2nd Punjaub Infantry during the Indian Mutiny campaign in
11857-58, and was present at the siege, assault and capture of Delhi including the battle of Nujjuffghur. Accom-
panied Greathed's Movable Column and present at the battle of Boolundshuhur ; was detached with a portion
of his Regiment at Allyghur ; and subsequently commanded a mixed force in the Etawah District, where he had
several engagements with the enemy and captured five guns, after driving the enemy fr om his position— received
the thanks of the Governor General (Medal with Clasp, and Brevet of Major). Served with the Looshai Expedition
in 1871-72 (Medal with Clasp).
233 Sir O. V. Tanner served in the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1857-58 (Medal). Served in the Afghan warof
1878-80, and was present in the engagements at Khushk-i-Nakhud and Sir-i-Asp ; accompanied Sir Frederick
Roberts in the march to Candahar (mentioned in despatches), and was present at the battle of Candahar (men-
tioned in despatches, Brevetof Colonel, CB.. Medal with Clasp, and Bronze Decoration). Served in the Egyptian
war of 1S82 in command of an Infantry Brigade of the Indian Contingent, and was present at the battle of Tel-el
Kebir (twice mentioned in despatches, KCB., Medal with Clasp, 2nd Class of the Medjidie, and Khedive's Star).
Commanded the expedition into the Zhob Valley in 1884, and received the expression of the approbation of the
Government of India for his conduct of the operations.
233 f Lieut.General C. A. Goodfellow served with the Central India Field Force in 1857-58, andwas present atthe
-siege and capture of Ratgbur, capture of Garrakota, siege and storm of Jahnsi (Victoria Cross, and Medal with
Clasp) ; was awarded the UlE for " gallant conduct at the attack on the Fort of Beyt, on the 6th October '859.
On that occasion a soldier of the 28th Regiment was shot under the walls of the fort. Lieutenant Goodfellow
rushed under the walls, under a sharp fire of matchlocks, and bore off the body of the soldier, who was then
dead, but whom he at first supposed to be wounded only." Was Assistant Field Engineer with the Okamundel
and Kattywar Field Force in 1859. Served as Brigade Major of Royal Engineers with the Abyssinian Expedi-
tionary Force throughout the campaign (mentioned in despatches for the " efficient manner in which he carried

Served throughout the Abyssinian campaign of 1867-68 in the Intelligence Department, present at the capture of
Magdala (Brevet of Major, and Medal). Served in the Looshai Campaign of 1S71-2 in Command of a Coolie Corps
(mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Lt. Colonel, and Clasp). Served in the Afghan war in 1878-79 as Assistant
Quarter Master General with the Quetta Field Force, and was present in the advance on and occupation of
Candahar and in the engagement at Takht-i-Pul; was Political Officer to the Force in the advance to the
Helmund, including the engagement at Saif-u-deen. (CB., and Medal). Served in the Egyptian war of 1882 as
Head of the Intelligence Department with the Indian Contingent, and was present at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir
