Gwalior (frequently — thrice specially — mentioned in despatches. Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp) , Served again
in the field in the latter end of 1858-59 as Adjutant General to the whole of the Troops south of the Nerbudda under
Sir Hugh Rose. Served as Assistant General of the 1st Division throughout the Abyssinian campaign of 1867-68,
and was present at the action of Arogee, and storm and capture of Magdala (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of
Colonel, and Medal). Served in the Afghan war in 1880 in command of a Brigade (Medal).
93 General H. Hopkinson served as Political Officer against the hill tribes of the Kolvelyne in Dec. 1847 and
Jan. 1 848, and was present at the surprise of the Akong Stockade. Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including the battles
of Chillianwallah and Goojerat, and pursuit of the Sikh Army and Affghans to Peshawur (Medal with two Clasps).
Burmese war in 3832, including the capture of Martaban (Medal with Clasp for Pegu).
94 General R. R. Mainwaring served m the Sutlej campaign in 1846 and was present at the battle of Sobraon
(Medal). Sonthal campaign of 1855. Indian Mutiny campaign including several actions with the rebels (Medal).
95 General A. F. Place served with the field force in Kurnool in 1839, and was present, at the affair at
Zorapore. Was employed in 1857-59 m Bengal. Served with the Shahabad Field Force under B rigadier Douglas ;
commanded a party of one subadar and 25 sepoys, and by stratagem surprised the rebel post of Mairodora and
captured ?6 boats 7th August 1858 ; present at the taking of Suhar on the left bank of the Soane and destruction
of the rebels' boat on the 21st August 1858, again at the destruction Of that town on the 20th September, at the
taking of Noorpoor, Surragah, and Turcole on the 15th and 22nd September when those towns and several boats
were destroyed (Medal).
90 General H. K. Burne served with the 2nd Bengal N. I. throughout the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46, including
the battles of Moodkee and Ferozeshah, and with the expedition against Kot Kangra (Medal and Clasp). Served
during the Burmese war of 1852-53 as Military Secretary to General Godwin, Commander of the Force, and was
present at the captures of Prome and Pegu (several times mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp for Pegu, and
Brevet of Major).
97 General C. T. Aitchison served in the campaign in the Southern Mahratta Country in 1844-45 as Field
Engineer, and was present at the storm and capture of Samunchur, Boodurehur, Punulla (wounded), Powunghur,
Munohur, and Munsuntosh (mentioned in despatches) . Served as Major of Brigade in Persian Expeditionary Fores
in 1856-57, and was present at the assault and capture of Reshire, surrender of Bushire, expedition to Borazjoon,
and action at Khooshab (mentioned in despatches and received the thanks of the Governor General in Council,
Medal with Clasp, and Brevet of Major). Served with Colonel Malcolm's Field Force in Southern Mahratta Country
during the mutiny in 1857-58, in command oi 200 Europeans during forced march on Shorapore, and at the surrender
and occupation of that fortress (Medal).
101 General J. R. M'Mullin served the Gwalior campaign, and was present at the battle of Punniar on 23th
Dec. 1843 (Bronze Star). Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including the action of Soroojhkoond, siege and surrender of
Mooltan, and battle of Goojerat (Medal with two Clasps). Served in the Indian .Mutiny campaign in 1857-59, and
was present at the capture of Calpee and in the operations in the Goruckpore district (Medal with Clasp).
10i Sir Arthur Howlett was employed in the suppression of tne mutiny in Bengal in 1857-59 ; served as Com-
missariat Officer with field columns under Colonel Fischer and Brigadier Carthew on the Grand Trunk Road, and
at Cawnpore from September 1857 to January 1858 ; was present at the actions on the 26th 27th and 28th November
1857 with the Gwalior mutineers before Cawnpore, and in the entrenchments during their subsequent investment
by the rebel force till 6th December following ; was with the head quarters of the regiment at Bunnee bridge when
it formed the rear guard of Sir James Outram's Force during the period of its occupation of the Alnmbagh, also
during the capture oi'Lucknow. Commanded a field detachment in Gurruckpoor district from 13th September till 27th
November 1858, and engaged in affairs with the rebels at Bansee on the 22nd and 28th September, atChittra, atPoka
Betwah, at Biscohu, and Doomaragunge. Was senior Officer commanding Head Quarters and Right Wing of his
regiment atthe action before Toolsepore, and was wounded on the 28th September and his horse shot under him.
Served as Deputy Assistant Quarter Master General to the field column under Brigadier Faddy in Bundlecund in
March 1859, and engaged in attack and rout of the rebels under Rumnust Sing by a detachment of 2nd Sikh Cavalry.
Served as Assistant Quarter Master General to the Saugor Field Divisioufrom July 1859 to the breaking up of the
division on 31st December tollowing (Brevet of Major, CB., and Medal with two Clasps).
105 Sir Charles H. Brownlow was present with the Army of Reserve during the Punjaub war of 1848-49. Served
with the 1st Sikh Infantry in the Black Mountain campaign, Hazara, in 1852-53 ; against the Momund Tribes in
August 1854, when he was shot through the lungs ; and in the Bozdur Expedition of 1857. Commanded the 20th
Punjaub Infantry in the operations on the Eusol'zai Frontier in 1058 ; throughout the China war of 1S60, including
the action of Siuho, taking of the Taku Forts, and occupation of Pekin (Brevet of Major) ; the Umbeyla cam-
paign of 1863 (Brevet of Lt.Colonel and CB.) ; and the Hazara Expedition of 1868 (Brevet of Colonel). Commanded
an Expeditionary Column into the Looshai Country in 1871-72 (thanked bv the Government of India, KCB). Has
received the Punjaub Medal, the China Medal with Clasps for the Taku Forts and Pekin, and the Indian Medal
with Clasps for North-West Frontier, Umbeyla, and Looshai.
106 General F. W. Baugh served the campaign of 1842 in Affghanistan under General Pollock, including the
actions at the forcing of the Khyber Pass, at Mamoo Khail, Jugdulluck, Tezeen, and Istaliff (Medal) . Throughout
the Sutlej campaign, including the battles of Moodkee, Ferozeshah, and Sobraon (Medal and two Clasps). Burmese
war in 1853 against the enemy near Prome (Medal with Clasp for Pegu). Indian Mutiny campaigns in 1857-58, and
action of Chinpoorah (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Major, and Medal).
109 Sir Thomas Wright served throughout the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including the actions of Bam-
nuggur, Sadoolapore, Chillianwallah, and Goojerat (Medal with two Clasps) . Served as Assistant Adjutant General
and chief Staif Officer with the force under Sir Sydney Cotton in the Eusofzie expedition of 1858 (mentioned in
despatches, Medal with Clasp). Served in the Indian Mutiny campaign in command uf the 2nd Sikh Cavalry in
Central India and defeated a body of the enemy in Bundlecund (mentioned in despatches, Medal). Served as
Assistant Adjutant General throughout the Umbeyla campaign of 1863 (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of
Lt.Colonel, and Clasp) ; and in the same capacity with the field force under Major General Tytler during the
operations of 1865-66 m Bhootan (Clasp).
11 General T. it. Snow served throughout the campaign of 1843 in Sind under Sir Charles Napier, and was
present at the battles of Meeanee and Hyderabad— horse shot (Medal). Served under Sir J. Lawrence against
the tribes in the Googaria district in 1857,' and on the 30th September he was wounded and his horse received a

General C. Dumbleton was present at the battle of Maharajpore 19th December 1843 (Bronze Star),
mn ln the Indian Mu tiny campaign in 1857 (Medal).
General G. R. S. Burrows served in the Afghan war in 1879-80, and commanded the forces in the engage-
ments on the Helmund and at Maiwand (two horses killed) ; took part in the defence of Candahar (mentioned in
despatches), including the sortie of Deh Khojah (mentioned in despatches), and commanded a Brigade at the
battle of Candahar (Medal with Clasp).
Sir Peter Lumsden served with the force employed in various expeditiors against the frontier tribes in
1S52-56; served as D. A. Qr.Master Genera! at the action of Punjhao 15th April 1352; at Nowadund, Pranghur.
Iskakot, and operations in the Rouezai Valley in May 1852 ; against the Boree Afreedeesin 1853 ; to Shah Mooseh
Kheyl against the Mohmuud tribe in 1854; expedition against the Meranzaie tribe in April 1855 ; including the
cava lry affair at Dursummund; against the Bussy Khelut Alum in November 1855; in Meranzaie and Kooran
exp editions in November 1S56 (received the special thanks of the Local and the Supreme Governments). Served
in a Special Military Mission to Afghanistan in 1857-58, ana received the thanks of the Supreme Government
(Medal with Clasp). In July 1848 he joined the Gwalior Force under General R. Napier, a,ud was present at
Ranode and subsequent pursuit in Central India (mentionod in despatches, Medal) . Accompanied the expedition
to Cnina in i85o, and was present at the actions of Sinho and Tangchow, assault and capture of the Taku Forts,
an d advance on Pekin (mentioned in despatches, Medal with two Clasps, and Brevet of Major). With Bhootan
Field Force in 1865 (Clasp).
120 General J. A.g. Faulknor served with the Fielp Force in Sind and Affghanistan from 1841 to 1844, and was
present at the defeat and capture of Meer Shah Mahomed at Peer Arree. He was also present at the siege and
capture of Dwarka in November 1859.
