WYLLY, Maj. C. H. fRes. cf Off.).— Served with
the Egyptian Expedition, 1882. — Medal ; bronze star.
Served with the Soudan Expedition, 1884-5. — Nile. In
the action of Kirbekan. 2 clasps.
DC WYLLY, Capt. G. G. E. (Ind. Army).— Served in
the S. African War, 1899-1900. — Twice wounded
(slightly and dangerously). Queen's medal with 3
clasps. Was awarded the Victoria-Cro>iS for the follow-
ing service : "On the ist September, 1900, near Warm
Bad, Lieut. Wylly was with the rdvanced scouts of
a foraging party. They were passing through a
narrow gorge, very rocky and thickly wooded, when
the enemy in force suddenly oiened fire at short
range from hidden cover, wounding six out of the
party of eight, including Lieut. Wylly. That officer,
seeing that one of Lis men was badly wounded in
the leg, and that his horse was shot, went back to
the man's assistance, made him take his (Lieut.
Wylly'si hors?, and > peie I fire from behind a rock
to cover the retreat of the others, at the imminent
risk of being cut off himseU. Colonel T. E. Hick-
man, DSO., considers that the gallant conduct of
Lieut. Wylly Sdved Corporal Brown from being killed
or captured, and that his subsequent action in firing
to cover the retreat was ' instrumental in saving others
of his men from death or capture.' "
