on the North West Frontier of India under Sir j
William Lockhart in 1897 with the 22nd Punjab '
Infantry wth the Malakand Field Force, and was
twice wounded in the attacks on 26th July and 2nd
August (13 G and Medal with two Clasps); was
awarded the V C (or conspicuous bravery during the
operations as here recorded : — " On the night of the
36th July, at the Malakand, Lieut. Costello went out
from the hospital enclosure, and, with the assistance
of two sepoys, brought in a wounded Lance-Havildar
who was lying sixty yards away in the open on the
football ground. This ground was at the time over-
run with swordsmen and swept by a heavy fire both
from the enemy and our own men who were holding
the sapper lines."

China, 1900. — Was present at the .elief of Pekin. Took
part in the action at Peitsaug. Severely wounded.
