East Africa. 1003-4. — Served in the Somaliland Cam-
paign. Medal with 2 clasps. Was awarded the Vic-
toria Cross under the following circtunstances : —
"During a reconnaissance near Jidballi. on loth Dec.
1903, when the two sections of the Poona Mtd. Inf.
and the Tribal Horse were retiring before a force of
Dervishes, which outnumbered them by thirtj' to one.
Lieut- Carter rode back alone — a distance of four
hundred yards — to the assistance of Priv. Jai Singh,
who had lost his horse, and w'as closely pursued by
a large number of the enemy, and, taking the Sepoy
up behind him. brought him safely away. When
Lieut. Carter reached Private Jai Singh, the Sections
were several hundred yards off.

in the S. African War, 1890-1900. — Took part in the
advance on Kimberley. including actions at Modder
River and Magersfontein. Was present during the
operations in the Orange Free State, Feb. to May
00, including those at Paardeberg, 17 to 26 Feb.
