on Tugela Heights, 14th to 27th Feb., .and the ac-
tion at Pieters Hill ; onerations in the Orange Free
State from Feb. to May 1900, including engagements
at Houtnek (Thoba Mtn.), and Zand River; and in
the Transvaal in May and Tune iqoo, including ac
tions near Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Diamond Hill,
nth and 12th June. Also took part in the operation?
in the Transvaal, east of Pretoria, from July to 29tt
November, including actions at Belfast, 26th ani
27th Aug. In command of 14th Hussars from 20th
Nov. 1900 to 5th June 1901. Took part in operation?

following act: — "On the 13th of Oct., 1900, at Geluk,
when the enemy were w-ithin 400 yards, and bringing
a heavy fire to bear, Maj. Brown (since adopted sur-
name Synge-Hutchinson), seeing that Sergt. Hersey's
horse was shot, stopped behind the last squadron as
it was retiring, and helped Sergt. Hersej- to mount
