WSj- Lt.Colonel C. V. S. Downes served in the Afghan War in 1879-80 on Van Transport Staff with the Koorum
and Cabul Field Forces, and was present at the night attack at Zaidabad, in the engagement at Charasiah on
6th of October, 1869 (mentioned in despatches), and in the operations around Cabul in December, 1879 (medal
with two Clasps).

Junction, El Magfar, Tel-el-Mahuta, and ilahsama, at the two actions at Kassasin. and at the battle of Tel-el-
Kebir (Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star). Served with the Royal Marine Battalion in the Soudan campaign

Dowar (Medal, Bronze Star). Served also in the Soudan T884-85 ; the Hazara Expedition 1891 ; and the Scuth
African war 1899-1900, taking part in the operations in the Orange Free State ; in the Transvaal, east of Pretoria ;
and in the Orange River and Cape Colonies.

176 Lt.Colonel J. M. F. England served with the 1st Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers in the Egyptian war of 1882,
and was present at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp, 4th Class of the Medjidie, and
Khedive's Star).
177 Lt.Colonel E. W. Evans served with the 19th Regiment in the Crimea from the 5th January to the 5th
October 1855, including the siege and fall of Sebastopol (severely wounded), and storming of the Redan on the 8th
September (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Served as Brigade Major 1st Brigade Hazara Field Force in
1868, including the expedition against the tribes on the Black Mountain (mentioned in despatches, Medal with

was present in the engagement at El Magfar, at the two actions at Kassasin, and at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (Medal
with Clasp, and Khedive's Star).
179 t Lt.i olonel G. S. Eyre served in the Afghan war in 1878-79, as Assistant Superintendent of Transport,
Koorum Valley Field Force, and was present at the attack and capture of the Peiwar Kotal as Acting Orderly
Officer to Colonel M'Queen (Medal with Clasp). Served with the Burmese Expedition in 1885-89 as Civil Officer
(received the thanks of .the Government of India, mentioned in despatches, Medal with two Clasps). [See also

Kotal, the operations in the Khost Valley, the engagement at Charasiah on the 6th October 1879, the operations
round Cabul in December 1879 including the investment of Sherpore, and the engagement at Saidabad ; accom-
panied Sir Frederick Roberts in the march to Candahar, and was present at the battle of Candahar (Medal with
four Clasps, and Bronze Decoration).
lS1 Lt.Colonel H. J. Faircloth served with the 81st Regiment in the Eusoofzie expedition in 1S58 (Medal with
Clasp). Served in the Indian Mutiny in 1857-58, and was present when the 81st Regiment, under Colonel Renny
with two troops of the Bengal Horse Artillery, disarmed at Mean Meerone Regiment of Native Cavalry and three,
Regiments of Native Infantry, all disaffected and ripe for mutiny (Medal). Served in the Afghan war in 1878-79,
-and was present at the attack and capture of Ali Musjid (Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp).
