war of 187S-S0, first as Brigade Major 1st Infantry Brigade 1st Division Southern Afghanistan Field Fcrce, and
afterwards with tha 2nd Battalion 9th Foot in Northern Afghanistan, including the affair at Shekabad under
Major General Ross (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Major, Medal).

geree, Puttialee, and Mynpoory, siege and capture of Lucknow, throughout the Rohilcund campaign, including
the attack on Fori. Rooyah, action of Alygunge, and capture of Bareilly ; seryed also the Oude campaign of 1858-59
(Medal with two Clasps) ; was awarded the VH " for cool intrepidity and characteristic daring in extinguishing a
fire in the Delhi Magazine enclosure, on the 16th September 1857, under a close and heavy musketry fire from the
«nemy, at the imminent risk of his life from the explosion of combustible stores in the shed in which the fire
occurred." Served in the Afghan war in 1879-80, and took part in the advance to Cabul with the force under
Brigadier General Charles Gough, including the engagement at Jugdulluek— severely wounded (mentioned in
despatches, Medal with Clasp).
963 Colonel H.M.Thompson served in the Eastern canrpaign in 1855-56, and was present at the siege and fall of
Sebastopol, including the assault on the Quarries on the 8th June, the capture of the Cemetery and Rifle Pits of the
18th June, and with the Reserve at the attack on the Redan of the 8th September (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish
Medal). Also served in the operations against the Taeping rebels in China in 1863.
965 Colonel Ross Thompson served in the Afghan war in 1879-80, and took part with the Hissarik and Lughmau
