the Natal Native Horse, taking part in the engagements at Zoblane Mountain, Kambula, and Ulundi (mentioned
in despatches, Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp). Served as Assistant Adjutant General (Principal Staff Officer)
to the Cape Colonial Forces during the Basuto war in 1880--81, and was present with the Mafeteng Relief Column
at the capture of Lerothodi's stronghold and several minor engagements. Served in the Egyptian war of 1882

(Medal). Also served with the Mahsood Wuzeeree Expedition in 1881. Served in the campaign en the North
West Frontier of India in 1897 with the 3rd Battalion Rifle Brigade (Medal with Clasp). Served in the South
African war, and took part in the relief of Ladysmith, including the actions of Monte Christo and Pieter's Hill ;
took part in the operations in Northern Natal, including the action at Laing's Nek ; the operations in the Trans-
