Force under Sir Robert Low in 1895 with the 2nd Battalion 4th Gurkha Rifles, and was present at the capture of
the Malakand Pass and the engagement at Mamugai (.Medal with Clasp). Served in the campaign on the North
West Frontier of India under Sir William Lockhartin 1897-98 with the Tirah Expeditionary Force with the 2nd
Battalion 4th Goorkha Rifles, and was present at the capture of the Sampagha and Arhanga Passes and in the
operations agaiDst the Chamkanis and in the Bazar Valley (two Clasps).
731 Major W. H. W. Mercer served with the Burmese Expedition in 1886-87, and was severely wounded in an

charge of Transport, and was present at the engagement of Landakai (mentioned in de-patches) and in the
operations in Bajaur and in the Mamuud country; also with the Buner Field Force as Brigade Transport

Officer with Colonel Le Gallais' Column, afterwards as Deputy Assistant Adjutant General for Transport, Army

Expedition in 1S91 (Clasp) ; and with the two Miranzai Expeditions in 1891. in tho first expedition as Orderly
Officer to the General Officer in command (Clasp). Served in the operations in the Hnnza-Nagar Country in
1891-92, including the capture of the Nilt Fort (Victoria Cross, Clasp): was awarded the Victoria Cross " for his
conspicuous bravery in the assault and capture of the Nilt Fort on 2nd December 1891. This officer led the
assault with dash and determination, and forced his way through difficult obstacles to the inner gate, when be
returned for reinforcements, moving intrepidly to and fro under a heavy cross-fire until he had olleced
sulticient men to relieve the hardly-pressed storming party and drive the enemy from the for; " Served in the
