6 Lt.Colonel Staunton served in the Afghan war in 1880, and accompanied Sir Frederick Robert3 in the march to
Candahar, and was present at the reconnaissance of 31st August and at the battle of Candahar (Medal with Clasp,
and Bronze Decoration). Served in the Boer war of 18S1, and was present at the battle of Aoiajuba Mountain.
Served in the South African war in 1901.
7 Colonel Hon. F. Gordon served in ttie Egyptian war of 1882, and was present at the battloof Tel-el- Kebir
(Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star). Served in the Soudan Expedition under Sir Gerald Graham in 1884 as
Adjutant of the 1st Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders, and was present in the engagements at El Teb and
Temai (two Clasps) ; and in the operations in the Soudan in 1889 including the engagement at Toski (CiaspV
Served in the South African war in 1S99-1900 as Deputy Assistant Adjutant General for Intelligence, and took part
in the relief of Ladysmith (twice mentioned in despatches, DSO., Brevet of Lt.Colonel).
10 Major Thomson served in the expedition to the Soudan in 1884. with the 1st Battalion of the Gordon High-
landers, and was present in the engagements at El Teb and Temai (Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star). Served
in the Nile Expedition in 1884-S5 with the 1st Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders (Clasp). Served with the
Chitral Relief Force under Sir Robert Low in 1395 with the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders, including the
storming of the Malakand Pass (Medal with Claspl. Served in the campaign on the North West Frontier of India
nnder Sir William Lockhart in 1897-98 with the Tirah Expeditionary Force with the tst Battalion Gordon High-
landers, and was present at the engagement at Dargai on the iSth October and at the assault of the Dargai
Heights on the 20th October, at the capture of the Satnpagha and Arhanga Passes, and the operations in the
Maidan, Waran, and Bara Valleys (mentioned in despatches, DSO., two Clasps).
12 Major Neish served in the expedition to the Soudan in 1884 with the 1st Battalion of the Gordon High-
landers, and was present in the engagements at El Teb and Temai (Medal with Olasp, and Khedive's Star).
Served in the Nile Expedition in 1884-85 with the 1st Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders and ivith the River
Column under Major General Earle (Clasp). Served in the South African war in igoi.
13 Major Uniacke served in the campaign on the North West Frontier of India under Sir William Lockhart in
1897-93 with the Tirah Expeditionary Force with the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders, and was present at the
engagement at Dargai on the 18th October and at the assault of the Dargai Heights on 20th October (slightly
wounded), at the capture of the Sampagha and Arhanga Passes, and in the operations in the Maidan and Barsi
Valleys (mentioned in despatches, Medal with two Clasps).
21 Major Greenhill-Gardyne served with the Chitral Relief Force under Sir Robert Low in 1855 with the 1st
Battalion Gordon Highlanders, including the storming of the Malakand Pass (Medal with Clasp). Served in the
South African war with the Gordon Highlanders in 1899-1901— slightly wounded, and took part in the operations
in the Transvaal, east of Pretoria, July to 29th Nov. 1900, including the actions at Belfast and Lydenburg ;
operations in the Transvaal, west of Pretoria, July to 29th Nov. 1900; and in the Orange River Colon}-, May to
29th Nov. 1900. Served as Railway Staff Officer at Bloemfontein, and afterwards as Adjutant of Steinaecker's
Horse (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Major, Medal with three Clasps).
22 Lt.Colonel W. E. Gordon served with the Chitral Relief Force under Sir Robert Low in 1895 with the 1st
Battalion Gordon Highlanders, including the storming of the Malakand Pass (Medal with Clasp). Served in the
campaign on the North West Frontier of India under Sir William Lockhart in 1897-9S with the Tirah Expeditionary
Force with the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders (Clasp). Served in the South African war in 1899-1901, and took
part in the advance on Kimberley, including the action at Magersfontein — severely wounded ; operations in the
Orange Free State, Feb. to May 1900, and at Paardeberg, including the actions at Poplar Grove, Driefontein,
Houtnek, Vet River, and Zand River; operations in the Transvaal in May and June 1900, an! the actions near
Johannesburg and Pretoria ; in the Transvaal, east of Pretoria, July to 29th Nov. 1900, and the actions at Belfast
and Lydenburg ; in the Transvaal, west of Pretoria, July to 29th Nov. 1900 ; and in Cape Colony, south and
north of Orange River, in 1899-1900. Served as Adjutant of the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders from 29tli Nov.
1899 (twice mentioned in despatches, TfftE, Medal with five Clasps) ; was awarded the Victoria Cross for the following
service : — " On July it, 1900, during the action near Leehoehoek (or Doornbosch Fontein) , near Krugersdorp, a party
of men, accompanied by Captains Toungerand Allan, having succeeded in dragging an artillery wagon under cover
when its horses were unable to do so by reason of the heavy and accurate fire of the enemy, Captain Gordon called
for volunteers to go out with him to try to bring in one of the guns. He went out alone to the nearest gun under a
heavy fire, and with the greatest coolness fastened a drag rope to the gun, and then beckoned to the men, who
immediately doubled out to join him in accordance with his previous instructions. While moving the gun, Captain
Younger and three men were hit. Seeing that further attempts would only result ill further casualties, Captain
Gordon ordered the remainder of the party under cover of the kopje again, and, having seen the wounded safely
away, himself retired. Captain Gordon's conduct, under a particularly heavy and mdst accurate fire at only 850
yards range, was most admirable, and his manner of handling his men most masterly ; his devotion on every occasion
that his battalion has been under tire has been remarkable."
24 Major Tytler served in the campaign on the North West Frontier nf India under Sir William Lockhart in
1807-98 as Brigade Transport. Officer 2nd Brigade Mohmund Field Force, afterwards as Brigade Transport Officer
3rd Brigade Tirah Expeditionary Force, and subsequently with the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders in the
operations in the Maidan, Waran, and Bara Valleys (Medal with two Clasps). Served in the South African war
in 1899-1901, and took part in the advance on Kimberley, including the action at Magersfontein; operations in
the Orange Free State, Feb. to May 1900, and at Paardeberg, including the actions at Poplar Grove, Driefontein,
Hoiunek, Vet River, and Zand River ; operations in the Transvaal in May and June 1900, and the actions near
Johannesburg and Pretoria ; in the Transvaal, east of Pretoria, July to 29th Nov. 1900, and the actions at Belfast,
and Lydenburg; iu the Transvaal, west of Pretoria, July to 29th Nov. 1900; and in Cape Colony, south and
north of Orange River, 1899-1900. Served as Commandant at Nooitgedacht (Medal with five Clasps).
26 Major Macnab served with the Chitral Relief Force under Sir Robert Low in 1895 with the 1st Battalion
Gordon Highlanders, including the storming of the Malakand Pass (Medal with Clasp). Served in the South
African war with the Gordon Highlanders in 1899-1901, and took part in the advance on Kimberley, including
the action at Magersfontein — seriously wounded ; operations in the Orange Free State, Feb. to May 1900 ; in the
Transvaal, east of Pretoria, July to 29th Nov. 1900 ; and in Cape Colony, south of Orange River, in 1899-1900.
Served with the Army Service Corps (Medal with three Clasps).
27 Major A. F. Gordon served with the Chitral Relief Force under Sir Robert Low in 1895 with the 1st
Battalion Gordon Highlanders (Medal with Clasp). Served in the campaign on the North West Frontier of India
under Sir William Lockhart in 1897-98 with the Tirah Expeditionary Force with the 1st Battalion Gordon High-
landers, and was present in the engagement at Dargai on the iSth October, at the assault of the Dargai Heights
on the 20th October (mentioned in despatches), at the capture of the Sampagha and Arhanga Passes, and in the
subsequent operations in the Maidan, Waran, and Bara Valleys (mentioned" in despatches, two Clasps). Served
in the operations in Ashanti in 1900 (mentioned in despatches, DSO.). Served in the South African war in 1901-
02 as Station Staff Officer and Railway Staff Officer (Medal).
23 Captain Meiklejohn served with the Chitral Relief Force under Sir Robert Low in 1895 with the 1st
Battalion Gordon Highlanders, including the storming of the Malakand Pass (Medal with Clasp). Served in the
campaign on the North West Frontier of India under Sir William Lockhart in 1897 with the Tirah Expeditionary
Force with the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders, and was present at the engagement at Dargai on the tSth
October and at the assault of the Dargai Heights on the 20th October— slightly wounded (two Clasps 1 . Served in
the South African war in 1899-1902, and was present at the battle of Elandslaagte — severely wounded (Fff), and
took part in the defence of Ladysmith. Served afterwards on the Staff in St. Helena (Medal with two Clasps) ;
was awarded the Victoria Cr03S for the following service: — "At the battle of Elandslaagte on the 21st October
1899, after trie main Boer po.-ition had been captured, some men of the Gordon Highlanders, when about
to assault a kopje in advance, we e exposed to a heavy cross-fire and, having lost their leaders, commenced
to waver. Seeing this, Captain Meiklejohn rushed to the front and called 011 the Gordons to folio w_ him. By
his conspicuous bravery aDd fearless example, he rallied the men and led them against the enemy's position,,
where he fell, desperately wounded la four places."
