The Kiny's Royal Rifle Corps. 324
under Sir Evelyn Wood in the Boer war of 18S1 as Assistant Quarter Master General. Served in the Egyptian war of
1882 as Assistant Adjutant and Quarter Master General on the Head Quarters Staff, and was present at the engage-
ments of Tel-el-Mahuta and Kassasin (9th Sept.), and in the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (mentioned in despatches, Aide de
Camp to the Queen, Medal with Clasp, 3rd Class of the Medjidie, and Khedive's Star). Served with the Nile Expedition
in 1884-85 on the Lines of Communication (mentioned in despatches, CB., and Clasp). Served with the Egyptian
Frontier Field Force in 1885-86, and was present in the engagement at Giniss in command of a Division (mentioned
in despatches, KCB., and promoted to 1st Class of the Medjidie and 3rd Class of the Osmanieh). Commanded the
troops during the operations near Suakin in December 1888 including the engagement at Gemaizah (mentioned in
despatches, Clasp). Also commauded the Nile Field Force in 1880 at the engagement at i'oski (mentioned iu
despatches, promoted Major General for distinguished service in the field, and Clasp).
4 Major General W. L. Pemberton served with the foth Rifles in India during rb.3 mutiny, and was severely
wounded, with loss of two fingers of left hand at.Cawnpire on the 27th Nov. 1857 (Medal). Served in the Zulu
war of 1879 and commanded one of the two divisions of the column raised for the relief of Ekowe, and was present
at the action of Gingindhlovu and relief of Ekowe (CB., Medal with Clasp).
5 Sir Cromer Ashburnham served with the 60th Rifles in the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1857-58, including the
actions on the Hindun, battle of Budleeke Serai and taking of the Heights before Delhi, subsequent siege operations,
assault and capture of the city, with the final attack on and occupation of the palace. Campaign in Rohilcund,
including the actions of Bugawalla and Nugena, relief of Moradabad, action on the Dojura, assault and capture of
Bareilly, attack and bombardment of Shahjehanpore, defeat of the rebels and relief of the garrison, capture of the
Fort of Bunnai, pursuit of the enemy to the left bank of the Goomtee, destruction of the Fort of Mahomdee, attack on
and destruction of Shahabad (Medal with Clasp). Served with the Candahar Column in the Afghan war of 1878-80.
Commanded the 2nd Battalion 60th Rifles from the outbreak of the war till the 18th February 1879, including the
surrender and occupation of Candahar and the advance on Khelat-i-Ghilzie ; was present at the action of Ahmed Kheyl
and surrender of Ghuznee, also at the attack on and capture of the Urzoo villages (CB., Medal with Clasp). Commanded
the 3rd Battalion 60th Rifles throughout the Boer war of 1880-81, and was present at the actions at Laing's Nek
(mentioned in despatches) and the Ingogo River (mentioned in despatches). Commanded the 3rd Battalion King's Royal
Rifle Corps throughout the Egyptian war of 1882, including the reconnaissance in force from Alexandria on 5th August,
the engagement at Tel-el-Mahuta and the action at Kassasin (9th September), and commanded the 4th Infantry Brigade
at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (mentioned in despatches, Aide de Camp to the Queen, KCB., Medal with Clasp, 3rd Class
of the Medjidie, and Khedive's Star). Served throughout the Soudan Expedition under Sir Gerald Graham in 1884 in

6 Sir Edward Hutton served with the 3rd Batta'ion 60th Rifles in the Zulu war of 1879; was present ar tie

19 Lt. Colonel Nugent served in the Hazara Expeditionin 1891 with the ist Battalion King's Royal Bifles (Medal
