attack and capture of Ali Musjid and the engagement at Futtebabad ; afterwards as Deputy Assistant Quarter
Master General, and was present in the engagement at Charasiah on the 6th October 1879, in the operations around
Cabul in December 1879, including the investment nf Sherpore, and in the engagement at Shekabad; accompanied
Sir Frederick Roberts in the march to Candahar, and was present at the battle of Candahar (frequently mentioned
in despatches, Brevets of Major and Lt. Colonel, Medal with four Clasps, and Bronze Decoration).
5 Colonel Synge-Hutchinson served in the South African war in r8gg-rgo2, and was present at the relief of
Ladysmith, including the operations of 5th to 7th Feb. rgoo and action at Vaal Krantz. Took part in the operations on
Tugela Heights, '.4th to 27th Feb., and the action at Pieter's Hill; operations in the Orange Free State from Feb. to
May 1900, including engagements at Houtnek (Thoba Mountain) and Zand River ; and in the Transvaal in May and
June 1900, including actions near Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Diamond Hill, nth and T2th June. Also took part
in the operations in the Transvaal, east of Pretoria, from July to 29th November, including actions at Belfast, 26th
and 27th August. In command of 14th Hussars from 20th Nov. 1900 to 5th June 1901. Took part in operations in
Transvaal 30th Nov. 1900 to April 1901 ; in Orange River Colony Feb. to April 1902 ; and on the Zululand Frontier
of Natal in Sept. and Oct. 1901 (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Lt. Colonel, and UK, Medal with seven Clasps,
King's Medal with two Clasps). Was awarded the Victoria Cross for the following act- — "On the 13th October,
1900, at Geluk, when the enemy were within 400 yards, and bringing a heavy fire to bear, Major Brown (since adop-
ted surname Synge-Hutchir.son), seeing that Sergeant Hersey's horse was shot, stopped behind the last squadron as
it was retiring, and helped Sergeant Hersey to mount behind him, carrying him for about three-quarters of a mile to
a place of safety: He did this under a heavy fire. Major Brown afterwards enabled Lieut. Browne, 14th Hussars, to
mount, by holding his horse, which was very restive under the heavy fire. Lieutenant Browne could not otherwise
have mounted. Subsequently Major Brown carried Lance Corporal Trumpeter Leigh out of action."
