Yorkshire Light Infantry.— 1 Colonel Montague Johnstone served with the Bechuanaland Expedition under
Sir Charles Warren in 1884-85, when Captain in the 2nd Dragoons, on the Head Quarters Staff, and assisted in
raising the 2nd Mounted Rifles (Carrington's Horse). Served in South African war in 1899-1901 in command of a
Wing of the 4th Battalion Scottish Rifles, and took part in operations in Orange River Colony with the force
under Major General Paget, including engagements near Lindley, Bethlehem, and Wittebergen ; was present during
operations around Fouriesburg, resulting in the surr ender of Commandant Prinsloo ; after which he commanded his
Eattalion (the 4th Scottish Rifles) until it was ordered home on relief of the 3rd Battalion. Sometime Commandant
at Boshof, Orange River Colony (twice mentioned in despatches, DSO.. Medal with three Clasps). Commanded the
3rd Battalion Yorkshire Light Infantry during embodiment in the Mediterranean in igow-
