42 Lieuts. Ellis and Palmer served in the South African war in 1899-1903 with the 1st Battalion Border
Regiment.

part in the operations in Cape Colony and Natal in 1399, the relief of Ladysuiith including the action at Colenso,
operations of 17th to 24th Jan. including the action at Spion Kop, 5th to 7th Feb. including the action at Vaal
Krantz, on Tugela Heights including the action ai Pieter's Hill 27th Feb., Orange Free State in April and May,
Cape Colony in May, Orange River Colony in May, and the Transvaal in June.
