1 Lt.General Spurgin served with the 1st Madras F millers in the Burmese war of 1852-53, including Ihe
taking of •"'ega, and its subsequent defence (Medal with Clasp for Pegu). Served in suppression of the mutiny in
Bengal in 1857-58: commanded the trjops proceeding by steamer in July 1857 from Allahabad to Cawnpore,
covering the right of Havelock's Column and engaging the enemy on two occasions, on the fir3t landed his force,
repulsed the rebels and captured their 6-pounder gun ; was Staff Officer to General Neill at Cawnpore, afterwaids
Brigade Major to the 1st Brigade and was with it during its advance and entry into Lucknow on c-,th Sept.,
defence of the Residency and subsequent operations at the Alumbagh under Outram ; also served as a Brigade
Majorat *ne capture of Kaiserbagh, and capture o? Lucknotv (received the thanks of the Governor General in
Council, Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel, Medal with two Clasps, a year's service for Lucknow, and CSL).
- Lt.Colonel Hicks served in the South African war in 1899-1903 with the 2nd Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers,
and was present at the battle of Colenso in command of four Companies; subsequently served in the Orange River
Colony in command of the Battalion, and was present at the relief of Wepener and subsequent operations under
Sir Archibald Hunter, in the pursuit of De Wet under Lord Kitchener, and in the operations in Potchefstroom
under Major General Hart; commanded a Column sent to aid Major General Barton at Frederickstadt in
Oct. 1900 (CB.) : also commanded a column sent to clear the country from Potchefstroom to Lindiquee, September
and October, 1901.
3 Lt.Colonel Bird served in the South African war in 1899-1900 with the 2nd Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers, and
commanded the Battalion in the engagement at Talana and the subsequent retirement to Ladysmith ; was present
in the engagement at Lombard's Kop and at the relief of Ladysmith— severely injured by a fall from his horse
while on duty at Estcourt (mentioned in despatches) ; commanded the Battalion from 7th March to 6th April ; took
riart in the operations in Orange River Colony under Major General Hart, under Sir Archibald Hunter including the
capture of Fourteen Streams and Christiana, in the pursuit of De Wet under Lord Kitchener, and in Potchefstroom
under Major General Hart; commanded Infantry in General Hamilton's Brigade in December, 1900, and also in
General Knox's Brigade during the operations in the Eastern Transvaal under General French from January to
April, 1900 (three times mentioned in despatches, DSO.).
4 Major Shadfoi th served in the South African war with the 1st Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers, and took part in
the operations in the Transvaal, June 1900; in Natal, March to June 19C0, including the action at Laing's Nek; in
the Orange River Colony, June 1900 ; »nd in the Transvaal, east of Preioria, July 1900.
5 Lt.Colonel English served in the South African war in 1899-1900 with the 2nd Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers,
and was present in the engagements at Talana, Lombard's Kop, Venters Spruit (wounded), Hart's Hill, Pieter's Hill,
and Zinkerboaoh (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Lt.Colonel).
6 Lt. C> J. Gordon served in the Afghan war in 1880 with the 6th Bengal Light Infantry (Medal). Served in the
South African war in 1899-1900 with the Ladysmith Relief Force, and was present at the battle of Colenso —
gevereiv wounded, and took part in the operations in the Transvaal, east of Pretoria, July 1900 (mentioned in
defpa'ches, Brevet of Lt.Colonel).
8 Major Rutherford served in the South African war in 1899-1900 with the 1st Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers, and
took part in the operations in the Orange Free State, Feb. to May, 1900, including the action at Poplar Grove;
operations in the Transvaal, May to June 1900. including the actions near Johannesburg and Pretoria ; the action
