February to 21st August 1902— slightly woun fed, 26th September 1900 (mentioned in d.spitches, DSO., Medal with
four Clasps, King's Medal with two Clasps).
'■"t Captain Hobkirk nr.d Major Moffitt served in the South African war in 1900-01, and were present in
the operations in the Orange Free State including the actions at the Vet and Zand Rivers', in the operations in
the Transvaal including the actions near Johannesburg, Pretoria, and at Diamond Hill; also in the Transvaal
ekst of Pretoria including the engagement at Belfast, and west of Pretoria including the actions at Frederick-
stad (mentioned in despatches and awarded the Medal with five Clasps). Captain Moffitt, who by the way
served in the Ti>ah Expedition in 1897-58 (Medal and Clasp), being also in the operations in the Hope Town
district.
21 Captain Sammut served in the South African war in 1901-02 with the 2nd Battalion Essex Regiment, and subse-
quently with the 1st Battalion (Medal with four Clasps).
25 Captain Vandeleur served in the campaign on the North West Frontier of India in 1 897-98 with the Mohmand
Field Force on Transport duty, and with the Tirah Expeditionary Force (Medal with three Clasps). Served in the
South African war in 1899-1900 as Orderly Officer and Assistant Staff Officer for Colonial Forces ; was afterwards
employed with the South African Light Horse and with Roberts's Horse.
2j t Captain H. C. S. Heath served in the South African war in 1901-02 with the nth Battalion Mounted
Infantry, and as Adjutant of the 29th Battalion Mounted Infantry from 1st April to 31st May 1902 (Medal).
26 Captain Boone served with the Chitral Relief Force under Sir Robert Low ia 1895 (Medal with Clasp). Served
in the So ith African war in 1900-02 with (he 1st Battalion Essex Regiment, and was present in the operations in
lhe Orange Free State including the actions at the Vet and Zand Rivers; took part in the operations in the
Transvaal including the action at Diamond Hid; ia the Transvaal east of Pretoria including the engagement at
Belfast, and west of Pretoria including the action at Frederick itad ; also served with tho 14th Biitalion Mounted
Infantry (mentioned in despatches, Medal with four Clasps).
27 Major Pratt served in the South African war in 1899-1901 as Adjutant ist Battalion Essex Regiment, and was
present in the operations round Colesberg in January 1900, at the relief of Kimberley, and in the operations in the
Orange Free State including the engagements at Paardeberg, Driefontein — wounded, Poplar Grove and the Vet and
Zand Rivers ; also took part in the operations in the Transvaal, including the actions at Johannesburg, that outside
Pretoria on 4th June, and at Diamond Hill; and in the operations in the Transvaal east of Pretoria, including the
engagement at Belfast, and those in the Transvaal west of Pretoria, including the action at Frederickstad (twice
mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Major, Medal with six Clasps).
28 Captain Churchill served in the South African war in 1899-1002 with the 1st Battalion Essex Regiment, and was
present in the operations in Cape Colony, south of Orange River, 1899-1900, including the action at Colesberg;
and at the operations in the Transvaal, west of Pretoria, including the actions at Frederickstad. Since served with
26th Battalion Mounted Infantry (Medal with three Clasps).
■ 2S Captain A. C. Halahan served in the South African war in 1901-02 with the 2nd Battalion Essex Regiment,
and with the 29II1 Battalion Mounted Infantrv (Medal).
31 Lieut. C.J. B. Eaubtny served in the South African war in 1901-02 with the 2nd Battalion Essex Regimen*,
and wilhthe 29th Battalion Mounted Infantiy (Medal).
33 Lieuts. RyHn, Jones, Abbay, and Gee served in the South African war with the 2nd Battalion Essex Regi-
ment in 1 901-1902 ( Medal with four Clasps).
35 Lieut. Howard served in the Soutn African war in 1899-1900 with the ist Battalion Essex Regiment, and was
present in the operations round Colesberg in January 1900 ; in the march to Bloemfoiitein, including the engage-
ment at Paardeberg ; was Aide de Camp to Brigadier General Stephenson during the latter part of the march to
Bloemfontein ; also in the march to Dewetsdorp, including the engagement at Paardekraal ; in the march to Pre-
toria, including the engagement at the Vet River, that near Pretoria, and Diamond Hill, and in the advance to
Komati Poort, including the engagement at Belfast.
30 Lieut. Jacomb served in the South African war in 1899-1902, being present in the operations round Colesberg
in Jan. 1900; at the relief of Kimberley ; and in the operations in the Orange Free State, including the actions at
Paardeberg, Poplar Grove, Driefontein, Vet and Zand Rivers (Medal with four Clasps).
38 Lieut. Raleigh served in the South African war in 1899-1901 with the ist Battalion Essex Regiment, and was
present in the operations round Colesberg in Jan. 1900; at the relief of Kimberley; in the operations in the
Orange Free Statd, including the actions at Paardebrg, Driefontein (wounded), Poplar Grove, and the Vet and
Zand Rivers ; also took part in operations in tho Transvaal, including the actions near Johannesburg, that outside
Pretoria on 4th June, and Diamond Hid ; in the Transvaal east of Pretoria, including the engagement at Belfast ;
and in the Tiansvaal west of Pretoria, including the action at Frederickstad. Has since served in the 6th
Battalion Mounted Infantry (Medal with six Clasps).
39 Lieut. Woolhouse served in the South African war in 1899-1902 with the ist Battalion Essex Regiment,
and was present in the operations round Colesberg in Jan. 1900, and at the relief ot Kimberley; he also took
part in the operations in Orange River Colony, including the engagement at Paardeberg (Medal with three
Clasps).
43 Lieut. Thomson served in the Sou'h African war in 1899-1901 wit'a the ist Battalion E-sex Regiment, and was
present in the operations rouud Co'ejberg in January 1900, and at the relief of Kimbcley; also took part in the
operations in the Orange Free State, including the engagement at Paardeberg— wounded (Medal with three
Clasps).
42 Lieuts. Cbailes and Allardyce and Second Lieut. Huskisson served in tho South African war in 1901-02
with the 2nd Battalion Essex RegimeLt (Medal with five Clasps).
43 Lieuts. Raymond and Bowen served in the South African war in 1899-1902 with the ist Battalion Essex
Regiment, and were present in the Transvaal east of Pretoria, including the engagement at Belfast; they were also
in the operations west of Pretoria, including the actions at Frederickstad and Heidelberg; in the advance on and
capture of Carolina, including the two engagements at Twyfelaar; and also in the operations in the Hope Town
district, each being awarded a Medal with three Clasps.
44 Lieut. Rose served in the South African war in 1900-01 with the ist Battalion Essex Regiment, and was
present in the operations in the Orange Free State, including the actions at the Vet and Zand Rivers ; also taking
part in the operations in the Transvaal, including the actions at Johannesburg, that outside Pretoria on 4th June,
and Diamond Hill ; in the Transvaal east of Pretoria, including the engagement at Belfast; also in the Transvaal

and was present in the engagements near Pretoria and at Diamond Hill, and in the operations in the Transvaal, east

1901-02 ; Lieut. Whitmore being present in the march on Prieska, relief of Wepener, and in the operations
under Lord Methuen in the Western Transvaal ; in addition he served with the 43rd Imperial Yeomanry (Medal
with three Clasps). Lieut. White served with the 26th Mounted Infantry (Medal with three Clasps). Lieut.
Rasch served with the 6th Mounted Infantry (Medal with three Clasps). Second Lieut. Neave (Medal with two
Clasps). Second Lieut. Disney served with Bethune's Horse in 1900-01 (Medal with four Clasps).
48 Second Lieut. F. A. Hamilton served in the South African war in 1901-1902 with the 2nd Battalion Essex
Regiment (Medal with two Clasps).
