3 Major O'Brien served in the Afghan war in 1880, and was present with the 1st Punjab Cavalry in the affair at
Padkao Shana (mentioned in Brigadier General Palliser's despatch). Was attached to the 15th Sikhs as a volunteer
in the march from Cabul to Candahar under Sir Frederick Roberts, and was engaged in the reconnaissance on the
31st August and in the battle of Candahar (Medal with Clasp, and Bronze Decoration). Served in the South African
war in 1899-1900 (Bt. of Lt.Col.). Served in the South African war in 1889-1901, and was present at the relief < [
Ladysmith, including the operations of 5th to 7th Feb. 1900, and action at Vaal Krantz ; the operations on Tugela
Heights, 14th to 27th Feb. 1900, and engagement at Pieter's Hill. Also took part in the operations in the Orang't

4 Major Richardson served with the Seaforth Highlanders in the Egyptian war of 1882, and was present in the
engagement at Chalouf and at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star). Served throughout
the Nile Expedition in 1884-85 with the 20th Hussars Troop Light Camel Regiment, including the operations of
the Desert Column (Clasp). Served with the Egyptian Frontier Field Force in 1885-86, and was present in the engage-
ment at Giniss. Served in the South African war in 1899-1901 on the Staff, and was present at the relief of Kimber-
ley ; and took part in the operations in the Orange Free State from Feb. to March 1900, including those at Paardeberg,
17th to 26th Feb., and the engagements at Poplar Grove and Driefontein.
5 Lt. Colonel Brown served in the South African war in 1899-1902, and was present at the relief of Ladysmith,
including the operations of 5th to 7th Feb. 1900 and action at Vaal Krantz. He took part in the operations on Tugela
Heights, 14th to 27th Feb., and the action at Pieter's Hill; the operations in the Orange Free State from Feb. to
May 1900, including engagements at Houtnek (Thoba Mountain) and Zand River ; and in the Transvaal in May and
June 1900, including actions near Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Diamond Hill, nth and 12th June. Also took part
in the operations in the Transvaal, east of Pretoria, from July to 29th November, including actions at Belfast, 2(jt&
and 27th August. In command of 14th Hussars from 20th November 1900 to 5th June 1901 (mentioned in despatches,
Brevet of Lt.Colonel, and FC). Was awarded the Victoria Cross for the following act : " On the 13th October,
1900, at Geluk, when the enemy were within 400 yards, and bringing a heavy fire to bear, Major Brown, seeing that
Sergeant Hersey's horse was shot, stopped behind the last squadron as it was retiring, and helped Sergeant Hersey
to mount behind him, carrying him for about three-quarters of a mile to a place of safety. He did this under a heavy
fire: Major Brown afterwards enabled Lieut. Browne, 14th Hussars, to mount, by holding his horse, which was very
restive under the heavy fire. Lieutenant Browne could not otherwise have mounted. Subsequently Major Brown
carried Lance Corporal Trumpeter Leigh out of action." , ■
Major Tickell served in the operations in Uganda in 1898, and took part in several engagements (mentioned in
despatches, DSO., and Medal with Clasp). Served in the South African war in 1899-1900 as Special Service Officer
(mentioned in despatches).
10 Captain Brooksbank served in the South African war in 1899-1901, and was present at the relief of Kimberley :
and took part in the operations in the Orange Free State from Feb. to May 1900, including the engagements at

Depot and as Railway and Station Staff Officer at De Aar.
