1 Sir George Greaves served at Peshawur during the Indian Mutiny in 1357-5S. Served as Deputy Assistant
Adjutant General in the Eusofzye Expedition of 1858 under Sir Sydney Cotton (mentioned in despatches, Medal
with Clasp). Served in the war of New Zealand as D. A. Quarter Master General from January 1862 to January
1866. Surveyed the Waikato River under circumstances of great difficulty and danger, and piloted up it the gun-
boats Aeon and Pioneer. Was present at nearly the whole of the engagements, and was repeatedly mentioned in
despatches — mentioned as being " always conspicuous for energy and daring " (Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel,
and Medal). Served as Chief of the Staff of the Ashanti Expedition of 1873-74, and was present at the battle of
Amoaful, battle of Ordahsu, and capture of Coomassie, including the minor engagements on the road. Mentioned
in despatches by Sir Garnet Wolseley in the following terms :— " Colonel Greaves assumed the duties of Chief of
the Staff on the 17th December. His great knowledge of the army, his experience as a Staff Officer, the zeal and
ability he brings to bear upon his work mark him out as eminently qualified for the post he occupied. He has
rendered the most valuable assistance" (Medal with Clasp, and CB.). Served in the Soudan campaign in 1883 as
Chief of the Staff to Sir Gerald Graham (mentioned in despatches by Lord Wolseley in the following terms: —
" Sir G. Graham speaks in high terms of the manner in which Major General Sir George Greaves, KCMG. CB.,
performed the duties of Chief of the Staff to his force. I do not believe there is any officer who has a more exten-
sive knowledge of the working of the army than Sir George Greaves, nor one who can use his great staff and
administrative experience to better purpose" (KCB., Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star).
2 Lt.Colonel Frodsham served in the expedition to the Soudan in 1885 as Acting Adjutant to the 2nd Battalion
the East Surrey Regiment, and was present in the engagement at Hasheen, at the attack on the convoy on the 26th
March, and in the subsequent advance to Temai (Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star).
3 Lt.ColonelPearse served with the 70th Regiment in the Afghan war in 1878-79 under Brigadier General Biddulph,
including the occupation of Candahar (Medal). Served in the South African war in 1899-1900 with the 2nd Bat-
talion East Surrey Regiment, iind was present in the engagement at Willow Grange, the battle of Colenso, the
engagements at Spion Kop, Vaal Krantz, Monte Christo, Colenso (22nd and 23rd Feb.), and Pieter's Hill, and the
relief of Ladysmith ; commanded the Battalion after Lt.Colonel Harris was wounded on 23rd Feb. (mentioned in
despatches, Brevet of Lt.Colonel DSO.).
* Major Ringwood served with the 70th Regimentin the Afghan war in 1878-79, first with the Candahar Column
and afterwards with the Thull Chotiali Field Force under Major General Biddulph (Medal).
5 Major Benson served in the South African war in 1899-1900 with the 2nd Battalion East Surrey Regiment ;
commanded the Battalion in the operations in Northern Natal in May and June 1900, including the engagement at
Allemann's Nek (mentioned in despatches, DSO.).
6 Major 3. L. Smith served with the 70th Regiment in the Afghan war of 1878-S0 (Medal). Served in the ex-
pedition to the Soudan in 1885 with the 2nd Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment, and was present in the en-
gagement at Hasheen, at the attack on the convoy on the 26th March, and in the subsequent advance to Temai
(Medal witn Clasp, and Khedive's Star). Served in the South African war in 1899-1900 with the 2nd Battalion
East Surrey Regiment, and was present in the engagement at Willow Grange, the battle of Colenso, the engage-
ments at Spion Kop, Vaal Krantz, Monte Christo, and Colenso (22nd and 23rd Feb.) — severely wounded (mentioned
in despatches, DSO.).

was present in the engagement at Willow Grange, the battle of Colenso, the engagements at Spion Kop, Vaal
Krantz, Monte Christo, and Colenso (22nd and 23rd Feb.) — wounded (DSO.).
3 Lt.Colonel Donsterville served in the expedition to the Soudan in 1885 with the 2nd Battalion of the East Surrey
Regiment, and was present in the engagement at Hasheen, at the attack on the convoy on the 26th March, and in
subsequent advance to Temai (Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star). Served in the campaign on the North
West Frontier of India in 1897-98 as Aide de Camp to the General Officer Commanding the Malakand Field
Force, including the defence of the Malakand and the relief of Chakdara, the operations in the Swat Valley and
