" Prince Edward of Saxe-Weimar served in the Eastern campaign of 1854 with the Grenadier Guards, includ-
ing the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman, and siege of ^ebastopol (wounded in the leg in the Trenches
19 Oct., and mentioned in despatches, Aide de Camp to the Queen and Colonel, CB., Medal with tour Clasps,
Officer of the Legion of Honor, 4th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
9 Sir Neville Chamberlain served throughout the Alfghan campaigns of 1339-42, during which he was
attached to Christie's Corps of Irregular Cavalry, and was wounded on six different occasions and has receiver!

the Governor General's Body Guard at the battle of Mahvrajpore 29th Dec. 1843 (lironzc Star). Served in the

Commanded the Force on the N. VV. Frontier of India in various expeditions against the hostile Hill Tribes, and

52 Sir Henry Evelyn Wood entered the Navy in April 1S52, and served in the Naval Brigade as Aide de Camp to
Cancain Peel from istOct. 1854*-) 18 June 1855,' when he was severely wounded carrying up scaling-ladders to the
Redan: mentioned in Lord Raglan's despatches (Medal with two Clasps, Knight of the Legion oi'Honor, 5th
Class of the Medjidie, and Turkit.i Medal i. Served in the Indian campaign of 1858 as Brigade Major in Somerset's
Brigade, and was present at Rajghur, Sindwaho (mentioned in General Michel's despatch), Kharee, and Barode
—mentioned in despatches (Medal). Employed in 1859-60, while commanding 1st Regiment Beatson's Horse,
in hunting down rebels in the Seronge Jungles; thanked by the Government of India for an attack made on a
band in December 1859, and gazetted to the Victoria Cross " for having on the 19th October 1858, during action at
Sindwaho, when in command of a Troop of the 3rd Light Cavalry, attacked with much gallantry, almost single-
handed, a body of rebels who had made a stand, whom he routed. Also for having subsequently, near Sindhora,
gallantly advanced with a duffadar and sowar of Beatson's Horse, and rescued from a band cf robbers a Potail,
Ghemmum Singh, whom thev had captured and carried off to the Jungles, where they intended to hang him."
Raised the 2nd Regiment Central India Horse. Accompanied Sir Garnet Wolselej' to the Gold Coast in
September 1873 on special service, and served throughout the Ashanti war of 1873-74. Organized the natives
forming "Wood's Regiment." Commanded the attacking force at the action ot Essaman (received the ex-
pression of Her Majesty's approbation). Commanded the troops at the head of the road following the enemy
from Mansu to the river Prah prior to the arrival of the European troops, including the reconnaissance in
force of the 27th November. Commanded the Right Column at the battle of Amoaful (slightly wounded) ;
and commanded the Head Quarters of his regiment at the battle of Ordahsu ana capture of Coornassie
(several times mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Colonel, CB., Medal with Clasp). Served throughout the
Gaika war of 1878 in command of a column (several times mentioned in despatches). Served throughout
the Zulu war of 1879 in command of No. 4 Column. As Political Agent raised a contingent of 1,000 friendly
Zulus, known as "Wood's Irregulars." Two days after the British reverse at Isanhlwana he surprised and
defeited a force of several thousands of the enemy and then maintained an advanced position in the enemy's
country for which he was specially commended by the High Commissioner. Nominated KCB. Defeated the
Zulus in the action of Kambula on the 29th March. Appointed Brigadier General in April. Led the advance on
Ulundi with a flying column, and was present in the engagement there on the 4th July (mentioned in despatches,
Medal with Clasp). Served in the Boer war of 1881 with the rank of Major General, and on the death of Sir George
Colley, as Governor of Natal and Commander-in-Chief of the British forces (GCMG.). Served in the Egyptian
war of 1882 in command of the 4th Brigade in the operations near Alexandria, including the surrender of Kafr
Dowar and Damietta (mentioned in despatches, received the thanks of both Houses of Parliament, Medal. 2nd
Class of the Medjidie, and Khedive's Star). Served during the Nile Expedition in 1884-85 in command of the
Line of Communications (mentioned in desnatches, 1st Class of the Mediidie, Clasp).
0i General Godfrey Clerk served with the Rifle Brigade in the Indian mutiny, and was present at the Alum-
bagh and relief of Lucknow (Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp). Served in the campaign on the North West
Frontier of India in 1864, and was present in the engagement at Shubkudder (Medal with Clasp).
""Sir George Barker served with the 78th Highlanders in the Persian war in 1857, including the nighfc
attacK and battle of Kooshab, bombardment of 11 ohumrah, and expedition toAhwaz (Medal with Clasp). Served in
Bengal with Haveloek's Column from its first taking the field in 1857, including the actions of Futtohpore, Aonng,
Pan.loo Nuddee, Cawnpore, Onao, Buscerutgunge (first and second), Boorbeakechowkee, and the several actions
leading to and ending m the retiLf of the Residency of Lucknow and subsequent defence, including several sorties

us sjr Frederick Forestier Walker served as Assistant Military Secretary to Lieut. General Sir Arthur
Cunynghame during the Kafi'- warof 1878 (mentioned in despatches, CB.). Was employed on special service
throughout the Zulu war of 1S79, first as Principal Staff Officer to No 1 Column, being present at the action of
Inyezane, and during the occupation of Ekowe, and subsequently on the Line of Communications, and in com-
mand of Fort Pearson and the Lower Tugela District (mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp). Served
with the Bechuanaland Expedition under Sir Charles Warren in 1884-S5 as Assistant Adjutant and Quarter
Master General (CMG.) . Served in the South African war in 1899-1900 iu general command and direction Lines
of Communication (KCHG.).
121 Sir Charles Mansfield Clarke served in the 57th Regiment with the Column under Colonel Warre on the
Taptee river in co-operation with the Central India Field Force in 1858. Served also in the New Zealand war of
1861, and was present at the operations before Te Arei. Also during the war in 1863-66, present as Adjutant of the
57th at the action of Katikara (mentioned in despatches), and as D.A.Q.M. General from June 1863 to March 1866 in
the Province of Taranaki, including the action near Poutoko, capture of the Maori positions at Ahuahu, Kaitake,
Mataitawa, and Te Arei, operations at Warea and Te Puru, and various minor affairs (repeatedly mentioned in
despatches, Medal). Served in the Zulu campaign of 1879; commandedthe 57th Regiment in the engagement
at Grngindhlovu (mentioned in despatches) and relief of Ekowe ; afterwards commanded the 2nd Brigade is-t Divi-
sion, and subsequently was appointed to the command of "Clarke's Column"— a force of all arms— formed by
Sir Garnet Wolseley for the following objects : the second advance to Ulundi, the capture of King Cetywayo, the
subjugation of the Zulu tribes near the Middle Drift of th6 River Tugela, and the pacification of Zululand ; these
objects were successfully accomnlished— thanked in General Orders (mentioned in despatches as having "per-
tormed the duties of his responsible command in the most highly efficient manner," Brevet of Colonel, CB.,
-Vleoal with Clasp). On the conclusion of the war was appointed Commandant General of the Colonial Forces in
-oouth Africa.
